Book Henry George Liddell D D

Download or read book Henry George Liddell D D written by Henry L. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry George Liddell, D.D: Dean of Christ Church, Oxford; A Memoir This memoir has been compiled at the request of Mrs. Liddell, and has had the advantage of her constant encouragement. Many friends of the late Dean have most kindly contributed to the volume their recollections of his life at various times and under different aspects. Their contributions have, as far as possible, been duly acknowledged. The compiler of the memoir may himself claim, without presumption, to write with an authority based upon adequate knowledge. It was his good fortune to be admitted to Westminster School by Mr. Liddell in 1851. For four years he was under him there, and rose to be a member of his Sixth Form. From 1858 to 1877 he was a resident student of Christ Church, and as undergraduate, Tutor, and Censor, was brought into very varied and often very intimate relations with the Dean. The friendship which he was thus privileged to enjoy extended over nearly half a century, and was only ended by the Dean's death. Book Alice s Evidence

Download or read book Alice s Evidence written by Robert B. Waltz and published by Robert B. Waltz. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This replaces the earlier Looking Autism in the Face: Two New Perspectives on Autism. This is personal; it is the expanded combination a pair of items I wrote about autism. Part of it looks at the relationship between Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) and Alice Liddell, and marshals the evidence that Dodgson was not in lust after Alice, but rather was an autistic who formed an autistic friendship with her; the rest examines six noteworthy who were afflicted with “music and mathematics” autism and shows what they accomplished, and how we should understand such people. The whole is intended to demonstrate the difficult and complicated emotions I call “autistic friendship” and trouthe. Dedicated to Catie Jo Pidel, to Elizabeth and Patricia Rosenberg, and to “Sarah Jane,” all of whom taught me lessons.

Book Notes from Oxford 1910 1911

Download or read book Notes from Oxford 1910 1911 written by R'D O'Leary and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the span of forty years, Professor Raphael Dorman OLeary passionately imparted to his students his love of writing and English literature at the University of Kansas. When he died after a short illness in 1936, his personal effects were passed to several relatives until Dennis OLeary, and his wife, Margaret, discovered his papers while restoring a family house. Amid Professor OLearys papers were two slim and battered booklets containing the colorful journal that he kept during his sabbatical in Oxford, England, from 1910 to 1911. The journal paints a vibrant picture of OLearys academic, social, political, and religious encounters in Oxford, England, as he and his family attempted to adjust to an alien world. Professor OLeary portrays with humor and pathos his myriad encounters with professors, politicians, Rhodes scholars, shopkeepers, nurses, street urchins, and mummers while vividly describing the dreary climate, tea and dinner parties, football games, the marketplace, musty bookstores, Oxfords slums, and the birth of his son in a rooming house bedroom. Notes from Oxford, 19101911 reveals a fascinating glimpse into the experiences of a revered English professor during his one-year sabbatical in Oxford, England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marilyn Yurdan was born in Oxford, the idea for the book came from her research where she quickly learned that the idyllic City of Dreaming Spires is very far from an accurate view of life in Oxford over the ages. The Dark Side of Oxford ranges from the 13th century to late-Victorian times and paints a fascinating and sometimes shocking picture of how our ancestors lived and died.

Book The English Professor

Download or read book The English Professor written by Margaret R. O’Leary/Dennis S. O’Leary and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the span of more than forty years, Raphael Dorman O’Leary, a professor of English rhetoric and English literature, taught his students at the University of Kansas to think straight, to put sinew into their sentences, and to embrace the magnificent literary treasures of their mother tongue. The English Professor, by authors Margaret R. O’Leary and Dennis S. O’Leary, offers a narrative of the life, work, and times of a revered Midwestern university English teacher. This memoir narrates how the professor, born in 1866, was raised on a Kansas farm in the post-bellum era. Like his father before him, he was committed to a life of learning and teaching. His colleagues knew him for his unpretentious exterior, honesty, and integrity, and his flashing anger at cheapness, vulgarity, pretense, and, above all, charlatanism. When Professor O’Leary died after a short illness in 1936, his personal effects passed through two generations to his grandson, Dennis S. O’Leary, who, with his wife, Margaret, discovered his papers while restoring a family house. The trove of material served as the core resource for the compilation of The English Professor. It provides insights into the histories of Kansas and the University of Kansas and of Harvard University, as well as perspectives on higher education, including the teaching of English rhetoric, language, literature, journalism, and oratory in the United States.
