Book Henderson Smokey Mt Mystery

Download or read book Henderson Smokey Mt Mystery written by F. Robert Henderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F. Robert Henderson has had an improbable life. He was born in Texas in 1933. His parents were both born in Kansas. At the age of eight, his father and mother split up. He grew up under his mother’s care. He attended college and received a Master’s Degree in Botany and Zoology from Fort Hays Kansas State University. He attended the University of Kansas where in 1960 a book he wrote was published by the Kansas State Biological Survey, entitled “Beaver in Kansas”. From 1961-1968, he worked as a Field Biologist for the state wildlife agency in South Dakota. During that time he wrote several articles in scientific journals, the most important being the results of the first study of Black-footed Ferrets in the wild, this animal is one of the rarest mammals in North America. In a research study he trapped and banded more than 10 thousand sharp-tailed grouse. More grouse that has ever been studied before. And during the study found a new method of determining the sex of these grouse. From June of 1968 until 1996 he was promoted from Assistant Professor to Professor at Kansas State University, where he received many awards for his work as Extension Specialist in helping people cope with conflicts involving wild animals. He became recognized as a national expert in preventing coyote damage to livestock. Many agencies and groups have honored him for his work. Among these awards include: Meritorious Service USDA Award for Outstanding Extension Work; USDA and Kansas State University Awards for Extraordinary Leadership in Kansas, the Great Plains and nationally for the development of educational programs; and the Great Plains Agriculture Council’s Outstanding Service Award in 1993. F. Robert Henderson did not accomplish these things without a lot of help and understanding and encouragement. F. Robert is grateful for the exceptional support of Karen, his wife and children, Tammy and Todd as well as numerous farmers, ranchers, hunters, colleagues and research associates. As a diversion from the stress of his work, in 1978, F. Robert Henderson began to study his roots, especially on the Henderson side of his family. At that time his late father, Frank Paul Henderson did not know who his second great grandfather was, or even, much about family history from that time back. Together, F. Robert Henderson and his father worked together to gather facts about their ancestors. This book is a result of that study.

Book excerpt: What attracted 19th century travelers to the rugged landscape of Michigan's Upper Peninsula? Most travelers had to brave the frigid, gigantic, and the often-perilous Lake Superior to gain entrance to the Upper Peninsula. But although the lake and rugged terrain often made it difficult for travelers to traverse the Upper Peninsula, it also often made travel an adventurous and enjoyable occasion. Lake Superior Country: 19th Century Travel and Tourism to Michigan's Upper Peninsula will follow these 19th century travelers, from the explorers in search of land titles and valuable mineral deposits in the early part of the century, to "literary travelers" seeking to witness the romantic region made famous by Henry W. Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha," to the sportsmen and sportswomen who found a bounty of wildlife and fishing grounds. It will also illustrate the various methods of travel undertaken by these people, from birch bark canoes, to steamers, to the railroads, and how these different methods of travel defined the overall tourist experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary mystery, and an avant-garde mystery are presented in Three Plots for Poe. This sequence is a tribute to the Gothic genius of Poe who shaped the mystery genre. At the same time, these tales explore three phases of the genres progress and at last escape its Gothic limits altogether. An old-fashioned mystery, Death Calls the Shots invokes the golden age of pulp mysteries in a way that led Jacques Barzun, one of the ultimate authorities on this era, to express his admiration of the story for its mood, plot, pace, and structure. A contemporary mystery,Love in the Modern Landscape offers an unusual blend of evil and intelligence endangering a pair of lovers who appear unequal to the threat. An avantgarde mystery, Still No Ice at the Fish Market opens with a pair of bangsa bomb exploding in the midst of lovemakingand ends up as one of the most unusual literary experiments in many years. Two alternating narrators in this story capture the extremes of classic clarity and Gothic chaos, wit and weirdness, as they hand the story to each other from one chapter to the next until the final chapter blends their separate styles. In all three novels, passionate love affairs become more powerful than evil in competing for the center of the story. As the genius who rules these Gothic games, the ghost of Poe is exorcised at last.
