Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artist Gottfried Helnwein (born 1948) has been known for decades as a master of provocation and technique in the visual and performing arts. While his early works were drawn from the horrors witnessed by his own generation, as well as his youth in post-World War II Austria, Helnwein's more recent paintings present more hallucinatory images of reverie, combining powerful gestures of light and shadow with depictions of the aftermath of violence, brutality and suffering. In the works gathered in this monograph, Helnwein particularly dwells on children as victims of unexplained violence (as the image used on the book's front cover conveys). I Was a Child was published for the first major exhibition of Helnwein's work in New York.

Book excerpt: "Helnwein debuts in striking fashion... The writing, especially the dialogue, is magnetic, honest, and brimming with caustic wit... [an] enrapturing take on the intense highs and lows of teenage love." —Booklist (Starred Review) "Wildly real and bursting with all the romance and pain of coming into oneself." —Kirkus (Starred Review) "Helnwein frankly conveys the joy, fear, and awkwardness of an all-consuming first love, poignantly depicting Gracie’s growth: particularly the hard-won knowledge that she can exist 'just by the sheer force of herself,' and the grace she learns to show herself and others." —Publishers Weekly "One of Eight 2021 YA Books To TBR ASAP" —BookRiot Mercedes Helnwein's Slingshot is an exciting debut contemporary young adult novel perfect for fans of Rainbow Rowell and Mary H. K. Choi "I didn’t think it was going to be anything like this when I finally fell in love. I thought it was going to be pretty simple. Like, I’d love someone and they’d love me. I thought that’s the way it worked.” Grace Welles is stuck at a third-tier boarding school in the swamps of Florida, where her method of survival is a strict, self-imposed loneliness. And it works. Her crap attitude keeps people away because without friends, there are fewer to lose. But when she accidentally saves the new kid, Wade Scholfield, from being beaten up, everything about her precariously balanced loner world collapses and, in order to find her footing again, she has no choice but to discover a completely new way to exist. Because with Wade around, school rules are optional, weird is okay, and conversations about wormholes can lead to make-out sessions that disrupt any logical stream of thought. Nothing’s perfect, but that’s not the point. When they're together everything seems uncomplicated in a way that Grace knows is not possible. Except it is. So why does Grace crush Wade’s heart into a million pieces? Acidly funny and compulsive readable, this debut is a story about two people finding each other and then screwing it all up. See also: soulmate, stupidity, sex, friendship, bad poetry, very bad decisions and all the indignities of being in love for the first time.

Book Gottfried Helnwein The Epiphany of the Displaced

Download or read book Gottfried Helnwein The Epiphany of the Displaced written by and published by Skira Editore. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A massive survey of the disquieting paintings of Austrian provocateur Gottfried Helnwein This substantial volume is the most complete monograph to date on the work of the provocative Austrian painter, photographer, filmmaker, performer and set designer Gottfried Helnwein (born 1948). Helwein's work--whether it be his hyperrealistic images of distressed children or his bandaged self-portraits--expresses a traumatic human condition barely suppressed by the conventions of polite society. His unflinching approach to his subject matter has earned him prominent fans and detractors alike. As Klaus Schröder, director of the Albertina Museum in Vienna puts it, "Gottfried Helnwein shakes people at their core." Edited by art critic Demetrio Paparoni, Gottfriend Helnwein: The Epiphany of the Displaced features a preface by the actor Sean Penn, essays by Schröder and gallerist Martin Muller, and an interview with the artist conducted by experimental philosopher Jonathon Keats.

Book excerpt: "Following a spectacular debut in the 1970's, Helnwein went on in the decade that followed to draw his subject matter extensively from popular culture. He tackled the urgent issues of the day. He confronted the problems that preoccupied people and gave nurture to their dreams. Taking idols such as James Dean and Clint Eastwood, or subjects such as rape, clinical deformity in a monstrous society, or suicide, Helnwein touched the nerve of the age and laid it bare for all to see". -Page 6.

Book Encountering Nazi Tourism Sites

Download or read book Encountering Nazi Tourism Sites written by Derek Dalton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encountering Nazi Tourism Sites explores how the terrible legacy of Nazi criminality is experienced by tourists, bridging the gap between cultural criminology and tourism studies to make a significant contribution to our understanding of how Nazi criminality is evoked and invoked in the landscape of modern Germany. This study is grounded in fieldwork encounters with memorials, museums and perpetrator sites across Germany and the Netherlands, including Berlin Holocaust memorials and museums, the Anne Frank House, the Wannsee House, Wewelsburg Castle and concentration camps. At the core of this research is a respect for each site’s unique physical, architectural or curatorial form and how this enables insights into different aspects of the Holocaust. Chapters grapple with themes of authenticity, empathy, voyeurism and vicarious experience to better comprehend the possibilities and limits of affective encounters at these sites. This will be of great interest to upper level students and researchers of criminology, Holocaust studies, museology, tourism studies, memorialisation studies and the burgeoning field of ‘difficult’ heritage.

Book The Dangerous Philosophies of Michael Jackson

Download or read book The Dangerous Philosophies of Michael Jackson written by Elizabeth Amisu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential companion to Michael Jackson's music, films, and books, this work offers 21 original, academic essays on all things Jackson-from film, music, and dance to fashion, culture, and literature. Going well beyond the average celebrity biography, this comprehensive book looks at why Jackson is regarded as one of the most important musicians of our time, offering insights into every facet of his art, life, and artistic afterlife. It looks at the methods by which his work was created, presented, received, and appropriated; discusses Jackson's varied personas along with his public and private appearances, albums, conceptual art, short films, and dance; and considers his use of costume, makeup, and reinvention. To help readers understand the phenomenon that was-and is-Michael Jackson, the book focuses on Jackson's historical context through an analysis of his films, songs, and books, examining him as an artist and shedding light on the political and ideological debates that surrounded him. Not shying away from the controversial aspects of Jackson's life and legacy, it also tackles questions of sexuality and racism, gender, and class, comparing Jackson to artists ranging from J. S. Bach to Andy Warhol. Through its examination of Jackson's entire catalog, the work connects all the aspects of his art and life to exemplify-and explain-the performer's unparalleled influence in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Book New Masters of Flash

Download or read book New Masters of Flash written by Hoss Gifford and published by Apress. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flash has upped the standard for web motion graphics and has been welcomed with open arms on account of its powerful new ActionScripting capabilities. Following the phenomenal success of New Masters of Flash, the Flash Annual will bring together a new collection of the hottest Flash design talents on the planet, all of whom have grabbed attention in the preceding year. New Masters of Flash: The 2002 Annual gives competent web artists inspiration for cutting-edge Flash design techniques, as well as hard tutorial information on how to build top class effects. The format builds on the best of the original best-selling title while improving in areas where the first volume was weaker, (e.g. generic customizable code examples), while the talents, the inspirations and effects are all of the moment and represent the mature and expert deployment of the staggering new capabilities of Flash 5 ActionScript. The Flash Annual format: The Intro is a series of 3 "field-report" essays written by key New Masters from the previous year covering new talents, new techniques and new trends. The main body of the book is then an evolution from the original format. This time, as well as the inspiration and tutorial sections, we add a third section to each chapter, headnotes. Part summary, part chapter commentary, part code overview, the Headnotes section teases out the reusable and generic elements of the previous tutorial and suggests ways forward for the reader.

Book Yesterday s Tomorrows

Download or read book Yesterday s Tomorrows written by Pere Gallardo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 was a year of financial crises and ecological disasters, of endings and forebodings. The world did not end on December 21st as the Mayan calendar predicted, but became the stage for new beginnings, utopian communities, protest groups and solidarity movements. The essays in this book form an intertextual space for negotiating meaningful facts and fictions with an aim to understanding the present. Discussions focus on utopia and dystopia from literature and film, not only within the framework of science fiction but also critical theory, gender politics and social sciences. The authors of these essays are international academics whose interest lies in utopian studies and who attended the 13th International Conference of Utopian Studies, “The Shape of Things to Come”, held in Tarragona, Spain, in 2012.

Download or read book Faceless written by Bogomir Doringer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this book explore a phenomenon that appears to be a contradiction in itself – we, the users of computers, can be tracked in digital space for all eternity. Although, on the one hand, one wants to be noticed and noticeable, on the other hand one does not necessarily want to be recognized at the first instance, being prey to an unfathomable public, or – even less so – to lose face. The book documents artistic and other strategies that point out options for appearing in the infinite book of faces whilst nevertheless avoiding being included in any records. The desire not to become a mere object of facial sell-out does not just remain an aesthetic endeavor. The contributions also contain combative and sarcastic statements against a digital dynamic that has already penetrated our everyday lives.
