Book excerpt: Part of the Peter Owen World Series: BalticsInstitutionalized in an asylum, a woman with a record of hallucinations commits her life story to paper. She records, from the age of six, her earliest memories of a drunken and abusive father, the strange men her mother introduced to repair the family, the imaginary forest to which she would run for safety and, of course, the talking Green Crow who appeared when she most needed her. The Green Crow is a conceited, boisterous creature who follows the novel's nameless protagonist throughout her life, until the day that the crow's presence begins to embarrass her. Confined to a tedious domestic life, she is desperate to hide the crow's very existence. Failing to do so, she winds up in a psychiatric hospital. Can she repress and renounce her acerbic, sharp-beaked daemon - or learn to love herself, bird and all? Translated from the Latvian by Zanete Vevere Pasqualini

By befriending the birds and gaining their trust, Kirpluk shares many observations on subjects such as: The language of crows Crow habits and social relationships The endearing personal relationships that evolved and allowed her to learn from the birds Kirpluk brings to life the unforgettable characters of these birds by combining anecdotal tales and recent scientific literature. It is only a few hours later when Dark Cloud gives birth to Snow, her overdue son. As her baby grows into a Cheyenne boy and word spreads that white people are coming, the Cheyenne and Arapaho prepare to meet the Kiowa and Comanche to make peace. But as a spotted sickness lurks in the shadows, the tribes must weather the winter with thin hides and little fat. Their troubles have just begun. In Ohio, a few years later, George Custer attends school, graduates, and begins teaching school. At the same time, as Dark Clouds belly swells again and the Native American warriors grow angrier with every unjust raid, Snow has grown into a strong and brave warrior named Bear of the Cheyenne. In this captivating historical novel, two parallel lives intertwine during an intense conflict between culturesone focused on the future and the other clinging to a remembered yesterday. Obviously written from the heart, this is a story that had to be written Terry Wilson, PhD, dean emeritus of Native American Studies, UCBerkeley

Book Krishna s Lineage

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-07-02
  • ISBN : 0190279206
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Krishna s Lineage written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forming the final part of the Sanskrit Mahabharata, the Harivamsha's main business is to supply narrative details about the great god Vishnu's avatar Krishna Vasudeva, who has been a comparatively minor character in the previous parts of the Mahabharata, despite having taken centre stage in the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna is born in Mathura (some 85 miles south of present-day Delhi). As an infant he is smuggled out of Mathura for his own safety. He and his brother Baladeva grow up among cowherds in the forest, where between them they perform many miraculous deeds and kill many dangerous demons, before returning to Mathura where they kill the evil King Kamsa and his cronies. Thereafter, Krishna is the hero and unofficial leader of his people the Yadava-Vrishnis. When Mathura is besieged by enemies, Krishna leads his people to abandon the town and migrate west, founding the dazzling new city of Dvaraka by the sea. Krishna then repeatedly travels away from that base repeatedly to perform heroic deeds benefitting those in need - including his own people, his more immediate family, and the gods. After narrating the stories of Krishna, the Harivamsha ends by finishing the story of Janamejaya with which the Mahabharata began. The Harivamsha is a powerhouse of Hindu mythology and a classic of world literature. It begins by contextualising Vishnu's appearance as Krishna in several ways, in the process presenting a variety of cosmogonical, cosmological, genealogical, mythological, theological, and karmalogical materials. It then narrates Krishna's birth and adventures in detail. Presenting a wide variety of exciting stories in a poetic register that makes extensive use of natural imagery, the Harivamsha is a neglected literary gem and an ideal starting-point for readers new to Indian literature.

Book excerpt: Ned the knight ALWAYS does exactly what he's told. When his parents ask him to pick up his toys, dig up the cabbages or go to bed on time, he does it all with a smile. And when the dragon swoops into town every night, he always runs inside just as he's asked. But one morning, instead of saying,"yes," he says, "NO!" He will NOT help his dad find his shield, his arrow or his bow, and he will certainly NOT let the butcher go past. That night, he refuses to go inside, and in doing so he confronts the dragon, making a very unlikely friend . . . A perfect picture book for toddlers just learning their first words, especially when they turns out to be - 'No!'.
