Book excerpt: It is shocking that although just one per cent of children are taken into care by local authorities, almost 30 per cent of prisoners have been in care. Ben Ashcrofts heart-rending account of abandonment, loneliness and rejection in family life, the care system and beyond begins at age nine and ends with him turning his life around after being moved from pillar to post, crime, drugs, going missing and custody. Ten years on, he works to motivate young people from similar backgrounds to believe that they can do the same; that whatever life throws at them they should Never, ever, give up. It is also a warning to parents, professionals and carers alike: to listen to what young people have to say, to make time for and reassure them and to recognise the often small but important things that make a difference in the bewildering world of growing-up. Challenges the core concepts we have as members of society, or indeed as child care professionals: Dr Peter McParlin (from the Foreword). The book was described as inspirational, powerful, emotional, compelling and required reading for anyone interested in the care system when released on Kindle, e.g. An inspiring and moving account of the trauma and distress caused to a young boy by his family and our care system: Sarah A very raw book but this only adds to the sense of passion and honesty with which it is written: Fiona Sorsby, Bingley, West Yorkshire. This motivational read is such a hard hitting tale its heartfelt and gives such a clear first-hand account of life living in a care home A brilliant worthwhile read about a man who truly turned his life around: Stacey Spencer.

Book excerpt: A Deck of Fifty One By: Annie Hensley When Decklan wakes up with all of the symptoms of a classic hangover, he discovers his mind is completely hazy when he tries to recollect the previous night’s events. Scowling in pain and angst, he figures some aspirin and a nap might be the prescription for a cure. It is only after a brief nap that he wakes up to discover Kyle, his best friend, apparently suffering from his own ailments, passed out in his car. But Kyle isn’t passed out. He’s dead. Completely shocked and grief-stricken, Decklan goes to the police, only to be pummeled down with questions, making it seem like he has become a suspect. After all, he was the last person to see Kyle alive. How will he face anyone? Do the closest people in his life suspect him as well? That’s when the threats start. A Deck of Fifty One reminds us that sometimes we can know someone… but not really know them.

Before he was saved on September 2, 2007, Dr. Cardell C. Portis lived his life like the devil was in him. At 9, Dr. Portis took his first drink. At 17, he was unaware of demons latching on to him after a friend performed a satanic ritual. In the army, he was a womanizer and a thief. But when a brutal truck accident caused some brain damage, his life took a particularly dark turn. Drugs provided the only relief from the constant pain after the accident. In out and out of jail and in out of rehab, Dr. Portis struggled to find hope and purpose. Then one simple act of kindness changed his life forever. Freed from addiction, he found himself in a church, saved by God for a new purpose. Gritty and real, Saved at Fifty-One is an honest look at one man’s life without and with God. The Lord had a plan for Dr. Portis – and He has one for you. There is always hope for salvation.

Download or read book The Forty Seven Ronin written by John A. Tucker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forty-Seven Rōnin vendetta is one of the most famous incidents in Japanese history, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. John A. Tucker seeks to provide a credible account of the vendetta and its afterlife in history. He suggests that, when considered historically and holistically, the vendetta appears as a site of contested cultural ground, with conflicts, disagreements, and debates characterizing its three-century history far more than cultural unanimity about its values, virtues, and icons. Tucker narrates the incident as the historical event that it was, within the context of Tokugawa social, political, cultural, and spiritual history, before exploring the vendetta as conflicted cultural ground, generating a steady flow of essays, novels, plays, and ideologically driven expressions intrinsic to the course of Japanese history. This engaging, accessible study provides insights into ways in which events and debates from early modern history have continued to inform developments in modern Japan.
Download or read book Hot Flash written by Bridget J. Crawford and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half the population will experience menopause; it is time for the law to acknowledge it. Menopause is a stage of life that half the population will inevitably experience. But it remains one of the last great taboo topics for discussion, even among close friends and family members. Silence and stigmas around many aspects of reproductive health—from menstruation to infertility to miscarriage to abortion—have historically created the conditions in which bias and discrimination can flourish. Menopause exemplifies that phenomenon, and in Hot Flash, authors Emily Gold Waldman, Bridget Crawford, and Naomi Cahn set out to replace the silence surrounding menopause with a deeper understanding. Hot Flash explores the culturally specific stereotypes that surround menopause as well as how menopause is treated in law and medicine. The book contextualizes menopause as one of several stages in a person's reproductive life. Taking U.S. law regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding as an entry point, the authors suggest changes in existing legislation and workplace policies that would incorporate menopause as well. More broadly, they push us to imagine how law can support a more equitable future. A broader framework further enables the authors to explore menopause discrimination as it is experienced by trans men and gender nonbinary people. They ultimately make the case for a new wave of intersectional feminism that encompasses gender, disability, age, and race.

Download or read book Herman Melville Typee Omoo Mardi LOA 1 written by Herman Melville and published by Library of America. This book was released on 1982-05-06 with total page 1358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of The Library of America's three-volume edition of the complete prose works of Herman Melville includes three romances of the South Seas. Typee and Omoo, based on the young Melville's experiences on a whaling ship, are exuberant accounts of the idyllic life among the "cannibals" in Polynesia. They remained his most popular works well into the 20th century. Mardi ("the world" in Polynesian) is a mixture of love story, adventure, and political allegory, set on a mythical Pacific island, that looks forward to the complexities of Moby-Dick. Together, these three romances give early evidence of the genius and daring that make Melville the master novelist of the sea and a precursor of modernist literature. Two companion volumes--Herman Melville: Redburn, White-Jacket, Moby-Dick and Herman Melville: Pierre, Israel Potter, The Piazza Tales, The Confidence Man, Uncollected Prose, and Billy Budd complete this edition of Melville's prose. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.
