Book excerpt: "The Graeco-Roman Decapolis city of Gerasa was a flourishing centre of population from the Late Hellenistic up to the Early Islamic period. It was also home to a vibrant ceramics industry. Kilns found throughout the city, with a concentration in the Hippodrome, suggest that Gerasa was in fact a mass-production centre in the Decapolis region over a number of centuries, manufacturing a vast array of material to suit the changing needs of daily life. Drawing on finds yielded during excavations by the Danish-German Northwest Quarter Project and other archaeological projects, as well as the research undertaken within the Ceramics in Context project, this volume evaluates the pottery from Gerasa produced in the Late Hellenistic and Roman periods. Typology, development over time, and variations in the Gerasene pottery are explored, and rare examples of imported material are analysed in order to shed light both on the inner workings of the city, and on the networks that extended beyond Gerasa's walls. The contributions gathered here examine the archaeology and history of Gerasa and assess ceramic remains alongside other finds from both the city and neighbouring urban centres. The city flourished into the mid-eighth century CE, when a devastating earthquake hit the region. Later in the Ayyubid-Mamluk period it was resettled, and archaeology also attests this period. More recent developments such as the urban expansion of the modern town have presented archaeologists with challenges, but Gerasa/Jerash remains the second most visited tourist site in Jordan due to its preserved and restored ruins. Archaeological research has been conducted in Jerash by international teams for more than a hundred years. Since 2011, a Danish-German team has been working in the North-West Quarter of Jerash on a four-hectare area at the highest point within the walled city. While earlier research mostly focused on the major civic monuments of the city, the Danish-German Jerash North-West Quarter Project has investigated the periphery of the town, examining what may be learned about urban life in these areas and what the periphery tells us about Gerasa/Jerash as a city"--

It deals with both the stratigraphy of the Hellenistic and Early Roman levels at Pella, and catalogues the pottery recovered from them. Short summaries of relevant work by the College of Wooster are also included. After a brief introduction to the site and history of excavations, a detailed description of the Hellenistic and Early Roman levels on the main mound of Khirbet Fahl, on nearby Tell Husn, and in select hinterland locations, then follows. The heart of the study centres on a detailed catalogue of the corpus of some 900 individual Hellenistic-Early Roman pottery fragments, accompanied by outline drawings for each fragment, and a smaller number of images of the more important pieces. Discussion of the relevance and importance of the material remains to the history and archaeology of the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods at Pella and more broadly to Jordan and the southern Levant concludes the study.
