Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hellenism in Ancient India The Invasion of India by Alexander is placed at 327-6 B. C. After having achieved the conquest of Persia, the Macedonian hero decided to undertake the conquest of India, so that he might attain to the sovereignty of Asia. To look from the standpoint of a world-conquest, the effects of the invasion of Alexander bore perfectly nothing, ina'smuch as a few years after his departure, there was not left a single Greek garrison in India. But that expedition which brought India for the first time in contact with Europe, had produced consequences of the utmost importance. In the following pages, we have not attempted to lift the veil which enshrouded the relation between India and the Westerntworld in the ages before Alexander, but have considered the kind of post Alexandrian influence on the civilisation of ancient India. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hellenism in Ancient India On the dismemberment of the conquests of Alexander the Great, Græco-Bactrian and Indo-Grecian kingdoms were called into existence, by which the plastic and the intelligent genius of the Greeks had been united to that of the imaginative and pious, or according to the view of others, superstitious Orientals and by the amalgamation of the West with the East, produced a new formation of historical relations, viz. Hellenism. Hellenism was first restrained from spreading to the East, and India proved here triumphant against the Greeks and for a longer period Greek influence continued to prevail in the Empire of Arsacids, the friends of the Greeks, who did not wage war against Greek civilisation. Ultimately, Hellenism revived in a narrower sphere, in the domain of arts and sciences and continued its activity with greater success. - Christian Lassen, "Beitrag zur Geschichte der griechischen und indoskythischen Konige in Baktrien, Kabul und Indien." This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progress of Hellenism in Alexander's Empire The following Lectures, delivered in the Univer sity of Chicago, represent the compendium of a long and brilliant development of human culture. To obtain a brief and yet accurate survey of it is certainly a desideratum to various classes of readers, and will, I trust, satisfy a real want. The general reader, who desires to learn something of the ex pansion of Greek ideas toward the East, will here find enough for a working knowledge of a very com plicated epoch. The specialist, who has devoted himself to some department of this field, will find here those general views of the whole which are necessary to every intelligent research into the parts. More especially, the student or teacher of Christi anity will find here the human side of its origin treated in a strictly historical spirit. To all such this little volume may be as welcome as were the lectures which compose it to the large and very sym pathetic class who heard them in the summer of 1904. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corporate Life in Ancient India The spirit of co-operation has contributed more than anything else to the present highly developed stage of civilisation. The gigantic ex periments in popular government and the huge economic organisations spreading over the whole world, such as we see to-day all around us, have made the modern age what it is. The corporate activity to which they owe their origin and the present high level of success, may therefore be justly looked upon as the distinctive element in the culture of the day. It is rightly believed that no nation that lacks in this essential ele ment of culture can hope to keep pace with the progress of the world.
