Book Hell Before Breakfast

Download or read book Hell Before Breakfast written by Robert H. Patton and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From acclaimed historian Robert H. Patton, author of The Pattons and Patriot Pirates, a rediscovery and celebration of America’s first chroniclers of foreign war. The first war correspondent, William H. Russell of The Times of London, described himself and his profession as “the miserable parent of a luckless tribe.” But it wasn’t long before others saw it differently. Hell Before Breakfast is the spectacular tale of larger-than-life Americans who made it their business to bring back news from the front; from Bull Run to the Paris Commune, from Africa to the Ottoman Empire, through decades of lightning-fast technological progress and high adventure. As America matured into a great power and the monarchies of Europe battled for dominance through a series of brief, bloody imperial wars, with the storm clouds of World War I drawing rapidly closer, these men and their newspapers were at center stage—the vanguard of a golden age of war correspondence.

Book excerpt: Think adolescence is hell? You have no idea... Welcome to Dante's Inferno, by way of The Breakfast Club, from the mind of American fiction's most brilliant troublemaker. "Death, like life, is what you make out of it." So says Madison, the whip-tongued 11-year-old narrator of Damned, Chuck Palahniuk's subversive homage to the young adult genre. Madison is abandoned at her Swiss boarding school over Christmas while her parents are off touting their new film projects and adopting more orphans. Over the holidays she dies of a marijuana overdose--and the next thing she knows, she's in Hell. This is the afterlife as only Chuck Palahniuk could imagine it: a twisted inferno inspired by both the most extreme and mundane of human evils, where The English Patient plays on repeat and roaming demons devour sinners limb by limb. However, underneath Madison's sad teenager affect there is still a child struggling to accept not only the events of her dysfunctional life, but also the truth about her death. For Madison, though, a more immediate source of comfort lies in the motley crew of young sinners she meets during her first days in Hell. With the help of Archer, Babette, Leonard, and Patterson, she learns to navigate Hell--and discovers that she'd rather be mortal and deluded and stupid with those she loves than perfect and alone.

Download or read book The Battle for Hell s Island written by Stephen L. Moore and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Pacific Payback, the true story of how a patchwork band of aviators saved Guadalcanal during WWII. November 1942: Japanese and American forces fight for control of Guadalcanal, a small but pivotal island in the South Pacific. The Japanese call it Jigoku no Shima—Hell's Island. Amid a seeming stalemate, a small group of U.S. Navy dive-bombers is called upon to help determine the island’s fate. When their carriers are lost, they are forced to operate from Henderson Field, a small dirt-and-gravel airstrip on Guadalcanal. They help form the Cactus Air Force, tasked with making dangerous flights from their jungle airfield while holding the line against Japanese air assaults, warship bombardments, and sniper attacks from the jungle. When the Japanese launch a final offensive to take the island, these dive-bomber jocks answer the call of duty—turning back an enemy warship armada, fighter planes, and a convoy of troop transports. The Battle for Hell's Island reveals how command of the South Pacific, and the outcome of the Pacific War, depended on control of a single dirt airstrip—and the small group of battle-weary aviators sent to protect it with their lives. This edition features a new introduction by Karl Wurf. The plot concerns Elias Henders, the prosperous owner of a ranch and a gold mine, has a beautiful daughter names Diana. While competing for Diana’s hand in marriage, ranch hand Colby sabotages foreman Bull and takes his job. The local stage has been repeatedly robbed of gold bullion from the mine, and Bull falls under suspicion. A rich Easterner named Wainwright tries to buy the mine and ranch, but Henders refuses the offer and discusses the property’s true value with Diana. She is intrigued by Wainwright’s Eastern-educated son Jefferson, however, who proposes marriage. His true nature shows when they are attacked by native Americans during a roundup, and he runs rather than defend her. Elias Henders is mortally wounded in the battle. His will bequeaths his property to his brother John back East so that he can take care of Diana, but John dies too. The scheming Wainwrights pretend that Henders had agreed to a sale, but Diana knows better...

Download or read book Hell s Foundations written by Geoffrey Moorhouse and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of books on the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign of 1915 but this one stands out. In it Geoffrey Moorhouse moves the focus from the more familar aspects to concentrate on one small mill town, Bury, in Lancashire, and to anatomize the long-lasting effect the Dardanelles had on it. Bury was the regimental home of the Lancashire Fusiliers. In the Gallipoli landings of 25 April 1915 it lost a large proportion of its youth. By May 1915, some 7,000 Bury men had already gone to war, to be followed by many others before Armistice Day. More than 1,600,from just three local battalions of the Fusiliers were among those who never returned. The regiment left 1,816 dead men on Gallipoli alone: it lost 13,642 soldiers in the Great War as a whole. This terrifying sacrifice left its mark. Bury commemorates Gallipoli on a scale similar to Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand and yet as the Second World War approached, recruitment to the regiment fell far behind that in other Lancashire towns. 'Hurtles one from rage and cynicism to involvement and tenderness . . . Moorhouse offers one of the most fascinating revelations of the orthodox British spirit, religious, political and social . . . This book makes wonderful reading.' Ronald Blythe, Sunday Times 'A fascinating new approach to this tragedy . . . Moorhouse's contribution (to the bibliography of Gallipoli) is of quite outstanding value.' Robert Rhodes James, The Independent 'A subtle and moving exploration of the way that memories of slaughter and loss shaped the town's post-first world war identity.' Terry Eagleton, New Statesman

Book An Angel Knocks on Hell s Door

Download or read book An Angel Knocks on Hell s Door written by Suzé DiPietro and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-07-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Angel Knocks on Hells Door is a riveting story of a young girls perilous journey into womanhood. When sixteen-year-old Gia discovers her father with another woman and reveals his betrayal to her family, he deserts them. They lose everything, plummeting from a comfortable middle-class existence into a neighborhood rife with crime, gangs, racial tension and drugs. It is there that the stage is set for Gia to come of age under the obsessive sexual attentions of a neighborhood gang leader. Suffering from the belief that she is guilty of having shattered her family and that she has become a loose woman, she is convinced that she is condemned to hell. Her sins are so great in her eyes that she can never confess them to a priest or anyone for that matter. And if you cant confess, you cant be forgiven. This is the story of Gias battle, triumph and salvation from hell -- without ever confessing a thing to a priest. Insecure and reeling from the departure of her husband, Gias mother is not prepared to raise her three children and support her mother. Unable to accept her leadership role, she emotionally abandons her family in favor of her new boyfriend. The children are left under the watchful eye of Nanny, her mother, who is nicknamed The Iron Lady. Nanny is a tough, no-nonsense woman with a rough-edged sense of humor. She is caught between protecting her grandchildren and risking her already fragile relationship with her daughter. Keenly aware that her family is dangerously close to self-destructing, she fears losing them to their personal demons: Tony to gangs, drugs and drinking; Mario, inwardly, to the solitary pursuit of running; and Gia to sexual awakening. The stakes are raised when Gia, the object of obsession for Nicky, a neighborhood Greek gang leader, unknowingly rebuffs him in favor of his younger brother. A ballistic Nicky rapes her, warning her that if she tells anyone, he will kill her and her family. Obsessed with controlling her, he takes over every facet of her life, from choosing what she wears, chauffeuring her to and from school, to physically and emotionally assaulting her if she doesnt do as he says. If Gia thought she was knocking on Hells door before, she is absolutely certain that Satan has answered it in the form of Nicky. A man of starkly contrasting dark and light personality traits, Nicky alternately abuses Gia and treats her like a princess. All the while he asserts, You will love me. Despite her initial fear and hatred of him, she slowly, and with much guilt and confusion, finds herself drawn to him both emotionally and physically. She struggles to understand how she can possibly love the devil unless shes evil too. This sets her on a treacherous pilgrimage of self-discovery. What she comes to realize is that in order to face Nicky, she has to face herself, even if she doesnt like what she sees. And sometimes the devil teaches us lessons that we dont want to learn but must learn in order to survive. Gia discovers exactly what she represents to Nicky and it involves more than just sex. He uses her as his sword against his controlling parents, his arranged marriage and his impending return to Greece. Gia's story ends in a stunning climax, surprising to both her and Nicky.

Book excerpt: The author of The Battered Bastards of Bastogne does a “superb job of telling the history the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden” (Kepler’s Book Reviews). Hell’s Highway is a history, most of which has never before been written. It is adventure recorded by those who lived it and put into context by an author who was also there. It is human drama on an enormous scale, told through the personal stories of 612 contributors of written and oral accounts of the Screaming Eagles’ part in the attempt to liberate the Netherlands. Koskimaki is an expert in weaving together individual recollections to make a compelling and uniquely first-hand account of the bravery and deprivations suffered by the troops, and their hopes, fears, triumphs, and tragedies, as well as those of Dutch civilians caught up in the action. There have been many books published on Operation Market Garden and there will surely be more. This book, however, gets to the heart of the action. The “big picture,” which most histories paint, here is just the context for the real history on the ground.

Book Hell s Folly

Download or read book Hell s Folly written by William Moody and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HELL'S FOLLY, this is my story. There will be many "old soldiers" that will remember the incidents differently than I do. There will be many "Military Historians" that will disagree with me in accordance to OFFICIAL RECORDS (including the Government of the United States Archives). This is unfortunately what happens in any war. It is the "nature of the beast". PART ONE The story begins in Camp Howze outside of Gainesville, Texas circa July 1944. Private Moody had just been Court-Martialed for "Sleeping on Guard" in a Mustard Gas Training Area adjacent to Camp Howze. Because it was so late in the day when Private Moody was released to the Provost Marshal, he was allowed to sleep in the troop area for that one night so the proper paper work could be processed early the next morning. "Six months confinement at hard labor, forfeiture of 2/3rds of the soldier's monthly pay for six months and reduction to Private from Private First Class", were the exact words the President of the court droned. Little did I realize how much it would change my life and my outlook on life itself. In the Post Stockade, Moody schemed with his cellmate to escape to Canada but when the 103rd Infantry Division was alerted for the European Theatre, he was offered the option of freedom and combat or escape and being hunted for the rest of his life, he chose the former and was released the next day. Out of the Stockade, "it was pack this, pack that, "throw that away, you won't need it where we're going" by his platoon sergeant, Sergeant Denny. We were soon headed to New York on a train where Moody played poker for four straight days and nights and won nearly seven thousand dollars. He went from a poverty stricken prisoner to a rich, free soldier. In New York he began to make errors in judgment mostly caused by money, a need for sex before going to Europe and just plain youthful stupidity regarding Army regulations ...... Further in the book... Acting Corporal Hell had many feelings that he had never intimated in our days back in Camp Howze, Texas. We were good friends but we never discussed the fact that he was German or what that might mean to him, or to me for that matter. When we started south toward Austria I thought the trip would be a lark, some fun times, maybe a German girl or two? But there was something different in Clarence Hell's mind. Dachau! To me "Dachau" meant nothing at that time. It was just a German word that I didn't understand. But to millions of Europeans and German immigrants in the United States it was synonyms for "Death, Torture and Human Misery". The first night we tried to get an hour or two of sleep along side of the Autobahn hidden by some brush but it was miserable. The second day out we headed west. That, in itself meant nothing to me. It was the first day of May 1945, and Hell had directed the Jeep driver straight into Dachau, Germany. I was flabbergasted. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Hell had no authority to do this. He was in direct disobedience of orders. We rode around the compound for around 30 minutes finding nothing. No German Guards, no prisoners. It was as if the whole garrison had packed up and migrated somewhere? I was just breathing a sigh of relief when the Jeep driver Private Feinartz spotted prisoners in one of the outer compounds. Hell ordered Feinartz to stop. We dismounted the jeep and walked toward the gate. The situation was spooky and smelly. The inmates looked like Ghosts in striped pajamas. We were 50 feet away from them but they stunk to the high heavens and they started toward us. Unfortunately, Hell had already used his grease gun to shoot the chain off the wrought iron gate. We were about to be hugged and kissed by these, poor, pitiful, people... PART TWO Others have contributed to my story (Part II). Their words have been relate
