Book excerpt: Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope (9 February 1863 - 8 July 1933), was a British novelist and playwright. He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels but he is remembered predominantly for only two books: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works, "minor classics" of English literature, are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance, books set in fictional European locales similar to the novels. Zenda has inspired many adaptations, most notably the 1937 Hollywood movie of the same name and the 1952 version.

Book excerpt: Mary Augusta Ward, née Arnold, (1851-1920), was a British novelist who wrote under her married name as Mrs. Humphry Ward. She began her career writing articles for magazines while working on a book for children that was published in 1881 under the title Milly and Olly. Her novels contained strong religious subject matter relevant to Victorian values she herself practised. Her popularity spread beyond Great Britain to the United States. According to the New York Times, her book Lady Rose's Daughter was the bestselling novel in the United States in 1903 as was The Marriage of William Ashe in 1905. Her most popular novel by far was the religious "novel with a purpose" Robert Elsmere, which portrayed the religious crisis of a young pastor and his family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Shoulder of Shasta' is a touching story interspersed with gothic notes about a middle class English girl named Esse who gradually grows to know and love the swashbuckling American cowboy Dick. A poignant tale set to the backdrop of the picturesque scenery of Mount Shasta in California. Stoker is definitely bringing readers something quite different from his cult classic 'Dracula', starring Bela Lugosi in its film adaptation. Highly recommended for those who enjoy the intensely vivid descriptions of Bram Stoker's other works, as well as those of his contemporaries Edgar Allan Poe, H. G. Wells and H. P. Lovecraft who also specialised in gothic and horror literature. Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born in Dublin in 1847. Turning to fiction in his later years, Stoker published his first short story 'The Crystal Cup' (1872) in London Society magazine. In the 1880s and 1890s, he published 'Under the Sunset' (1882) and an adventure novel titled 'The Snake’s Pass' (1890). It was the publication of 'Dracula' in 1897 which launched Stoker into literary stardom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Besant brings readers on a journey through the planes of existence, explaining the interplay of the physical reality we perceive and the spiritual planes beyond our perception. By quoting ancient documents of Buddhism and Taoism, Besant describes the composition and processes of the mysterious worlds beyond what we see and hear in everyday life. The divine wisdom of Theosophy includes doctrines from multiple ancient religions, such as those of Egypt, India, Tibet and Eastern Asia. In the eyes of the theosophist, each of these contributes truths to the phenomena of the physical, astral and mental planes which are explored by Besant. Philosophical concepts of the Self, the soul, the afterlife, and reincarnation receive attention in the later stages of this book, which also explains the links between the planes and concepts such as the Buddha realms and Nirvana. Besant keenly summarizes and describes the major facets of theosophy, whilst praising the movement's founder H. P. Blavatsky. Throughout this text, Besant's gifts for explanation and descriptive writing demystify spiritual mysteries and ideas that would otherwise be hard to comprehend. For years a leading proponent of the theosophic movement, Annie Besant published several books and delivered lectures in the early 20th century.
