Download or read book Nine year Response of Lodgepole Pine and the Dry Alder Complex to Chemical and Manual Release Treatments on an ICHmk1 Site Near Kelowna written by Suzanne Simard and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a research trial established in 1986 in southern interior British Columbia to study the effectiveness of glyphosate applied at three and at six litres/hectare, and of manual cutting, to release naturally regenerated lodgepole pine seedlings and suppress dry alder complex. Pine seedlings and two target species, Sitka alder and fireweed, were assessed for the first three years and again in the ninth year following treatment. Measurements made on the seedlings included height, current-year height increment, and stem diameter at root collar. Target vegetation was assessed for species-specific percent cover and the height of one average target specimen per woody species was also measured.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of research trials established in 1986-87 in the Kamloops Forest Region, British Columbia, studied the effectiveness of chemical and manual treatment methods for controlling competing vegetation, and also studied the impact that these brushing methods had on the range resource in the region. This report first describes the study methodology, including site selection, experimental design, measurements made, and statistical analyses. It then reports the results of the three studies in the series: the effects of brushing and grazing on lodgepole pine, the dry alder plant community, and range forage at the Devick Lake site; effects of brushing and grazing on lodgepole pine, the willow plant community, and range forage at the Ellis Creek site; and effects of brushing on lodgepole pine, the pinegrass plant community, and range forage at the Upper McKay Creek site.

Download or read book Competitive Effects of Trembling Aspen on Lodgepole Pine Performance in the SBS and IDF Zones of the Cariboo Chilcotin Region of South central British Columbia written by Teresa A. Newsome and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes & presents results of a retrospective study carried out between 1992 and 1999 in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia to quantify the effects of trembling aspen competition on lodgepole pine performance, and to identify competition indices or other measures of competition that could be used by field staff. Target pine were selected across neighbourhoods in six stands with varying densities of aspen. Data pertaining to pine size & condition, and to the size & location of aspen within a 70-inch radius of the pine were collected three times. Measurements began when the stands were seven to 12 years old. Various approaches are used to identify levels of aspen abundance when pine performance declined below acceptable levels. These include analyses of regression & correlation, tests of existing competition indices, and visual & statistical characterization of trends. Finally, conservative recommendations are made for the retention of aspen within pine stands in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region.

Download or read book Factors Influencing the Density of Natural Regeneration in Uniform Shelterwoods Dominated by Douglas fir in the Sub boreal Spruce Zone written by Philip Joseph Burton and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three replicates of a uniform shelterwood trial were established in even-aged stands dominated by Douglas-fir in the SBSdw1 variant northeast of Williams Lake, B.C., with initial harvesting conducted in the summer of 1991. Treatments consisted of a two-stage shelterwood leaving 50% residual basal area (RBA) after the first entry and a three-stage shelterwood leaving 70% RBA, with overstory thinning achieved by hand-falling or by feller-buncher. Treatment units were 1.4 ha in area, with an uncut control (100% RBA) at each site. Seedfall was monitored using ten 0.37 m 2 seedfall traps in each treatment unit, inspected twice a year from 1992 through 1998. The abundance of different ground surface materials was surveyed in 1990, 1991, and 1993. Controlled germination experiments were conducted in 1994, 1995, and 1996. on four seedbed materials (forest floor, live moss, rotting wood, and mineral soil) across all RBA levels. Surveys of the density of natural regeneration were conducted in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1996. ... Results to date suggest that a low residual basal area, combined with a high level of forest floor disturbance, is preferable for enhancing conifer regeneration. It is tentatively recommended that a preparatory cut is not necessary for naturally regenerating Douglas-fir under a shelterwood overstory in this zone, and that the seed cut should leave less than 50% residual basal area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia are world renowned, but much less is known about the other rainforest located 500 kilometres inland along the western slopes of the interior mountains. The unique integration of continentality and humidity in this region favours the development of lush rainforest communities that incorporate both coastal and boreal elements. In British Columbia's Inland Rainforest, scientists bring together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of information about this distinctive ecosystem. They also consider the ecological consequences of human activities in the rainforest and present strategies for its management and conservation.

Download or read book Effects of Operational Brushing on Conifers and Plant Communities in the Southern Interior of British Columbia written by Suzanne Simard and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook contains information on the effects of operational brushing treatments on conifers & plant communities in the Kamloops and Nelson forest regions of British Columbia. Data were collected over a nine-year period from 96 individual PROBE (PRotocol for Operational Brushing Evaluations) trials. The first three sections present an introduction to the PROBE program, its objectives, and the research methodology. Sections 4 to 11 contain detailed analyses for eight vegetation complexes (fireweed, fern, mixed shrub, ericaceous shrub & subalpine herb, dry alder, wet alder, aspen, and mixed broadleaf/shrub complex). Each of these sections contains an abstract, an introduction, site descriptions, results, discussion, conclusions, and management implications. The final section is an overall summary and management recommendation. Appendices include information about the willow and pinegrass complexes, a summary of results for unreplicated treatments involving those communities, and summary tables of information about PROBE sites that presently represent unreplicated treatment cells.
