Book excerpt: Set in Norwich, Hector’s Wheels follows a remarkable beagle on his adventures with his brother, Reggie. Hector was born with a disabled front leg and was set to go and live his life in a dogs’ home, until the perfect human family and a very special American wheelchair came along. Now readers follow Hector as he faces the trials and tribulations that his disability brings and overcomes adversity to lead an exceptionally full and active life. Readers accompany Hector and Reggie on their many escapades, including some near death experiences and rescues. From railway tracks, to irate workmen, to fast-flowing rivers, Reggie and Hector have escaped and survived, often with the help of their rather panicked humans. In her debut book, Victoria tells a heart-warming tale, which will be enjoyed by animal lovers. Hector’s Wheels is based on the adventures of real-life beagles, Hector and Reggie, who are well-known in their local area of Norwich.

Book excerpt: Border tensions are escalating to bloody violence; terrorist attacks on small-town American citizens and petty squabbles in far-flung locales threaten countless more lives. Welcome to America, circa 1916-1918, and two of the bloodiest conflicts that starkly defined an era. Teenage Hector Lassiter, an aspiring author inspired by propaganda and a siren’s song of throbbing war drums, lies about his age, mounts a horse, and storms across the Mexican border behind General “Black Jack” Pershing and George S. Patton to bring the terrorist and Revolutionary General Pancho Villa to justice. Soon, the still underage Hector is shipped off to the bloody trenches of France, fighting the so-called “War to End All Wars” where he meets fellow novelists-in-waiting John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway. Once A World is a love story at once epic and intimate; a portrait of the artist, and his country of birth, at a defining moment in their storied history. Edgar, Anthony and Macavity Awards finalist Craig McDonald, author of the internationally bestselling Hector Lassiter series, delivers an adventure novel and historical thriller for the still-uncertain 21st Century. Praise for Craig McDonald: “The competition for the future of crime fiction is fierce, as it should be, but don’t take your eyes off Craig McDonald. He’s wily, talented and—rarest of the rare—a true original. I am always eager to see what he’s going to do next.” —Laura Lippman “With each of his Hector Lassiter novels, Craig McDonald has stretched his canvas wider and unfurled tales of increasingly greater resonance.” —Megan Abbott “Nobody does mad pulp history like Craig McDonald. Reading a Hector Lassiter novel is like having a great uncle pull you aside, pour you a tumbler of rye, and tell you a story about how the 20th century really went down.” —Duane Swierczynski “A writer of truly unique voice, approach and ambition.” —Michael Koryta

Book Rupert Brooke Charles Sorley Isaac Rosenberg and Wilfred Owen

Download or read book Rupert Brooke Charles Sorley Isaac Rosenberg and Wilfred Owen written by Lorna Hardwick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg, and Charles Sorley all died in the First Word War. They came from diverse social, educational, and cultural backgrounds, but for all of the writers, engagement with Greek and Roman antiquity was decisive in shaping their war poetry. The world views and cultural hinterlands of Brooke and Sorley were framed by the Greek and Latin texts they had studied at school, whereas for Owen, who struggled with Latin, classical texts were a part of his aspirational literary imagination. Rosenberg's education was limited but he encountered some Greek and Roman literature through translations, and through mediations in English literature. The various ways in which the poets engaged with classical literature are analysed in the commentaries, which are designed to be accessible to classicists and to users from other subject areas. The extensive range of connections made by the poets and by subsequent readers is explained in the Introduction to the volume. The commentaries illuminate relationships between the poems and attitudes to the war at the time, in the immediate post-war years, and subsequently. They also probe how individual poems reveal various facets of the poetry of unease, the poetry of survival, and the poetics of war and ecology. References to the accompanying online Oxford Classical Receptions Commentaries will enable readers to follow up their special interests. This volume differs from the shorter volume Greek and Roman Antiquity in First World War Poetry: Making Connections in that it covers the whole output of the four poets, and not just their war poems.

  • Author : Homer
  • Publisher : Oxford Paperbacks
  • Release : 2008-07-10
  • ISBN : 0199536791
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book The Iliad written by Homer and published by Oxford Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iliad is the story of a few days' fighting in the tenth year of the legendary war between the Greeks and the Trojans, which broke out when Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, abducted the fabulously beautiful Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. After a quarrel between the Greek commander, Agamemnon, and the greatest of the Greek warriors, Achilles, the gods become more closely involved in the action. Their intervention leads to the tragic death of Hector, the Trojan leader, and to the final defeat of the Trojans. But the Iliad is much more than a series of battle scenes. It is a work of extraordinary pathos and profundity that concerns itself with issues as fundamental as the meaning of life and death. Even the heroic ethic itself - with its emphasis on pride, honour, prowess in battle, and submission to the inexorable will of the gods - is not left unquestioned.
