Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present state of the theoretical predictions for the hadronic heavy hadron production is not quite satisfactory. The full next-to-leading order (NLO) ${cal O} (alpha_s^3)$ corrections to the hadroproduction of heavy quarks have raised the leading order (LO) ${cal O} (alpha_s^2)$ estimates but the NLO predictions are still slightly below the experimental numbers. Moreover, the theoretical NLO predictions suffer from the usual large uncertainty resulting from the freedom in the choice of renormalization and factorization scales of perturbative QCD. In this light there are hopes that a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) ${cal O} (alpha_s^4)$ calculation will bring theoretical predictions even closer to the experimental data. Also, the dependence on the factorization and renormalization scales of the physical process is expected to be greatly reduced at NNLO. This would reduce the theoretical uncertainty and therefore make the comparison between theory and experiment much more significant. In this thesis I have concentrated on that part of NNLO corrections for hadronic heavy quark production where one-loop integrals contribute in the form of a loop-by-loop product. In the first part of the thesis I use dimensional regularization to calculate the ${cal O}(ep^2)$ expansion of scalar one-loop one-, two-, three- and four-point integrals. The Laurent series of the scalar integrals is needed as an input for the calculation of the one-loop matrix elements for the loop-by-loop contributions. Since each factor of the loop-by-loop product has negative powers of the dimensional regularization parameter $ep$ up to ${cal O}(ep^{-2})$, the Laurent series of the scalar integrals has to be calculated up to ${cal O}(ep^2)$. The negative powers of $ep$ are a consequence of ultraviolet and infrared/collinear (or mass) divergences. Among the scalar integrals the four-point integrals are the most complicated. The ${cal O}(ep^2)$ expansion of the three- and four-point integrals contain.

The underlying theme of the workshop, the first in a series, was an examination, both theoretical and experimental, of the state of understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics. Because of the pervasiveness of the strong interactions in all aspects of high energy physics, QCD is central to many problems in elementary particle physics. Therefore, this workshop was organized to provide a forum in which the theory Quantum Chromodynamics cou 1 d be confronted with experi ment. The workshop was organ i zed in four sessions, each of which concentrated on a major experimental arena in which a hard QCD process can be measured experimentally. A fifth session was rlevoted to global issues which effect all QCD processes. Each session began with a survey of the theoretical developments in the particular area and concluded with a round table which discussed the various information presented in the course of the discussions. A session of the workshop was devoted to the direct production of high transverse momentum photons in hadronic interactions. Data from several experiments, either completed or in progress at CERN (NA3, NA24, WA70, UA6, CCOR, R806, AFS, RllO, UA1 and UA2), were di scussed and the prospects for two new upcomi ng experi ments from Fermil ab (E-705, E-706) were presented.

Book excerpt: We present results from a new event-generator Monte Carlo program for semi- inclusive DIS heavy quark production computed in a composite 3-flavor/4-flavor scheme, which is applicable over a wider range of energy scales than existing calculations. We compare the semi-inclusive distributions in p[sub t], Q[sup 2] and W at O ([alpha][sup 1][sub s]) with recent HERA results. We also compare the inclusive F[sup charm][sub 2] with the data and the existing O ([alpha][sup 2][sub s]) 3-flavor scheme calculation. Both calculations agree will with current HERA data, but the resummed O ([alpha][sup 1][sub s]) composite scheme calculation is simpler and more efficient by an order of magnitude.

Book excerpt: We calculate the O([alpha]3s) short-distance, QCD collinear-factorized coefficient functions for all partonic channels that include the production of a heavy quark pair at short distances. Thus, this provides the first power correction to the collinear-factorized inclusive hadronic production of heavy quarkonia at large transverse momentum, pT, including the full leading-order perturbative contributions to the production of heavy quark pairs in all color and spin states employed in NRQCD treatments of this process. We discuss the role of the first power correction in the production rates and the polarizations of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The consistency of QCD collinear factorization and nonrelativistic QCD factorization applied to heavy quarkonium production is also discussed.
