Book excerpt: Heavy Flavors covers the proceedings of the Third Topical Seminar on Heavy Flavors, held in San Miniato, Italy on June 17-21, 1991. The book focuses on the reactions, properties, characteristics, and transformations of heavy flavors. The publication first offers information on flavor factories and monochromatization as the way to maximum luminosity B-factories, as well as design strategies and parameters, requirements, luminosity limitations, and B-factory with monochromatization and vertical separation. The book then ponders on theoretical results in heavy quark hadroproduction; heavy flavor production at high energies; and leptonic decay constants of heavy mesons. The book examines heavy baryon transitions and the heavy quark effective theory; non universality of nucleon sea distributions probed by neutrinos and muons; and heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders. The publication is a dependable reference for readers interested in the study of heavy flavors.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of review articles on the most outstanding topics in heavy flavour physics. All the authors have made significant contributions to this field. The book reviews in detail the theoretical structure of heavy flavour physics within the Standard Model and its confrontation with existing experimental data. The physics of the top quark and of the Higgs play an important role in this volume. Beginning with radiative electroweak corrections and their impressive tests at LEP and hadron colliders, the book summarizes the present status of quark mixing, CP violation and rare decays. The dynamics of exclusive D- and B-meson decays, the τ-lepton physics and the newly discovered heavy quark symmetries are discussed in detail. The impact of strong interactions on weak decays is clearly visible in many articles. The physics of heavy flavours at LEP, HERA and hadron colliders constitutes an important part of the book. Another significant topic is the possible role of heavy flavours in the spontaneous symmetry breaking of gauge symmetries. Finally the most recent advances in lattice calculations of the properties of heavy flavours and the lattice studies of the dynamics of heavy flavours are presented.

Book Heavy Flavours and High Energy Collisions in the 1 100 TeV Range

Download or read book Heavy Flavours and High Energy Collisions in the 1 100 TeV Range written by A. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is based on the proceedings of the 6th and 7th INFN ELOISATRON project workshops, held at the Centro di Cultura Scientifica "Et tore Majorana" CCSEM, Erice-Trapani, Sicily, Italy, in the period June 10-27, 1988. The topics of the two workshops were, respectively: - Heavy Flavours: Status and Perspectives, and - Novel Features of High Energy Collisions in 1-100 TeV Region. They were attended by sixty-three physicists. The two workshops were followed by a meeting of the INFN ELOISATRON working group, also held at the CCSEM in the period October 7-15, 1988 in which twenty-five physicists participated. Since there was quite a bit of overlap among speakers, participants and the topics covered at the three meetings, we have decided to issue ajoint proceeding, with the first part entitled: Heavy Flavour Physics, and the second: High Energy Physics with 1-100 Te V Proton Beams. Some of the reports included in this volume have been contributed by the INFN ELOISATRON working group members. The first. part of these proceedings deals mostly with the presentation and inter pretation of results in t.he so-called fiavour physics sector. New results, which have become available in the last three years from experiments involving kaons, charmed and beauty hadrons, and searches for the still missing top quark at the present and fothcoming colliders are topics of major interest. here. The contributions in this part are organized in three categories: Experimental Results, Theoretical Interpretation, and Future Directions.

Book An Introduction to Gauge Theories and Modern Particle Physics

Download or read book An Introduction to Gauge Theories and Modern Particle Physics written by Elliot Leader and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-14 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents, in two volumes, a comprehensive and unified treatment of modern theoretical and experimental particle physics at a level accessible to beginning research students. The emphasis throughout is on presenting underlying physical principles in a simple and intuitive way, and the more sophisticated methods demanded by present day research interests are introduced in a very gradual and gentle fashion. Volume 1 covers electroweak interactions, the discovery and properties of the 'new' particles, the discovery of partons and the construction and predictions of the simple parton model. Volume 2 deals at some length with CP-violation, but is mainly devoted to QCD and its application to 'hard' processes. A brief coverage of 'soft' hadronic physics is included. This work will provide a comprehensive reference and textbook for all graduate students and researchers interested in modern particle physics.

  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Subnuclear Physics written by Antonino Zichichi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Galvani Bicentenary Celebrations, the University of Bologna and its Academy of Sciences singled out subnuclear physics as the field of scientific research to be associated with this important event, as it would best illustrate, for the new generation of students, the challenge inherent in fundamental sciences. Subnuclear physics was born 50 years ago and has represented, ever since, the new frontiers of Galilean science. In his opening lecture delivered on the first day of the new academic year, Professor Antonino Zichichi analytically reviewed the basic conceptual developments and main discoveries achieved in subnuclear physics during the last 50 years. Given the importance of this field of fundamental research, Professor Zichichi was invited to expand the contents of his lecture into a book, and the outcome is this invaluable volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1982 a group of 104 physicists from 70 laboratories of 31 countries met in Erice to attend the 20th Course of the Inter national School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented at the School were: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Czechoslovakia, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Yugoslavia, and Zimbabwe. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI), the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Techno- logical Research (MRSI), the Sicilian Regional Government, and the Weizmann Institute of Science. This year, on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Chen Ning Yang, the "Ettore Majorana" Centre decided to pay tribute to the outstanding scientific achievements of one of the most prominent scientists of our time, by dedicating the 20th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics to a review of the pre sent status of one of the fields of physics where Chen Ning Yang has contributed most profoundly: gauge interactions. The theo retical foundations and the most recent developments were presented by Chen Ning Yang. The most general consequences of a gauge inter action -- supersymmetry -- with its theoretical aspects and the experimental implications were discussed by Sergio Ferrara and Demetrios Nanopoulos.

Book Exciting Physics With New Accelerator Facilities Proceedings Of The International Workshop

Download or read book Exciting Physics With New Accelerator Facilities Proceedings Of The International Workshop written by Hiroshi Toki and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-10-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the exciting physics with new accelerator facilities, which are being constructed or proposed in various places. The facilities are RHIC (Brookhaven), CEBAF (TJINP), SPring-8 (Nishi-Harima), RIBF (RIKEN), JHP (KEK-INS), RIB (MSU), LISS (IUCF) and COSY (Juelich). RHIC aims at the creation of a QCD deconfinement phase and the study of the properties of such matter. CEBAF and SPring-8 use leptons to probe the quark-gluon structures of hadrons and nuclei. LISS and COSY use high resolution hadron beams to study hadron structures. JHP produces strong secondary hadron beams for hyper-nuclear physics and rare decay studies of basic symmetries. RIBF and RIB produce radioactive nuclear beams for the study of the nuclear structure of unstable nuclei far from beta stability, and astrophysics issues.

Book Massive Neutrinos Flavor Mixing Of Leptons And Neutrino Oscillations

Download or read book Massive Neutrinos Flavor Mixing Of Leptons And Neutrino Oscillations written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations neutrino physics has become an interesting field of research in physics. They imply that neutrino must have a small mass and that the neutrinos, coupled to the charged leptons, are mixtures of the mass eigenstates, analogous to the flavor mixing of the quarks. The mixing angles for the quarks are small, but for the leptons two of the mixing angles are large. The masses of the three neutrinos must be very small, less than 1 eV, but from the oscillation experiments we only know the mass differences — the absolute masses are still unknown. Also we do not know, if the masses of the neutrinos are Dirac masses, as the masses of the charged leptons and of the quarks, or whether they are Majorana masses. In this volume, an overview of the present state of research in neutrino physics is given by well-known experimentalists and theorists. The contents — originated from talks and discussions at a recent conference addressing some of the most pressing open questions in neutrino physics — range from the oscillation experiments to CP-violation for leptons, to texture zero mass matrices and to the role of neutrinos in astrophysics and cosmology.

Book Flavor Physics for the Millennium

Download or read book Flavor Physics for the Millennium written by Jonathan L. Rosner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the broad subject of flavor physics, embracing the question of what distinguishes one type of elementary particles from another. The articles range from the forefront of formal theory (treating the physics of extra dimensions) to details of particle detectors. Although special emphasis is placed on the physics of kaons, charmed and beauty particles, top quarks, and neutrinos, the articles also dealing with electroweak physics, quantum chromodynamics, supersymmetry, and dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Violations of fundamental symmetries such as time reversal invariance are discussed in the context of neutral kaons, beauty particles, electric dipole moments, and parity violation in atoms. The physics of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and of quark masses are described in some detail, both from the standpoint of present and future experimental knowledge and from a more fundamental viewpoint, where physicists are still searching for the correct theory.
