Book Turning up the Heat on Pain TRPV1 Receptors in Pain and Inflammation

Download or read book Turning up the Heat on Pain TRPV1 Receptors in Pain and Inflammation written by Annika B. Malmberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite tremendous advances in the understanding of the sensory nervous system which have accompanied the recent explosive growth of the neurosciences, rema- ably few innovative medicines directed towards pain and inflammation are ava- able. Indeed, many patients are still prescribed analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications that were identified long ago as components of herbal remedies. Si- larly, potential new medicines in clinical evaluation based on capsaicin and the c- saicin receptor are both grounded firmly on folk traditions and yet rely upon the most contemporary techniques of drug discovery and delivery. The first formal report of the pain-relieving properties of capsaicin appeared in 1850 [1]. However, for centuries before this, capsaicin-containing extracts had been used as folk medicines in cultures with access to pepper plants, much in the same way as poppy or willow-bark extracts were. Despite widespread use, it was not until 1878 that the selective action of capsaicin on the sensory nervous system was r- ognized [2]. In Chapter 1 of this volume, Janos Szolcsányi reviews this early research, which culminated with the seminal studies of Nicholas Jansco and his c- leagues in Hungary in the 1940s. Since then, capsaicin and related vanilloid c- pounds have played a prominent role in analgesia and inflammation investigations because of their ability to selectively activate a subpopulation of sensory neurons and produce sensations of pain and localized erythema.

Book Free Flight Observation of a Separated Turbulent Flow Including Heat Transfer Up to Mach 8 5

Download or read book Free Flight Observation of a Separated Turbulent Flow Including Heat Transfer Up to Mach 8 5 written by Dudley George McConnell and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A turbulent boundary layer separated by a forward-facing step was observed on the cylindrical portion of a hemisphere-cone-cylinder test vehicle. Tip blunting, producing a shear flow, was found to induce higher pressures on the cylindrical portion than were predicted from ballistic tunnel data of unblunted projectiles. An approximate method for predicting this blunt-body pressure distribution was hypothesized. These findings, along with the hypothesis, were substantiated by a wind tunnel test of a similar body. The peak pressure ratios of the separation were smaller in magnitude than flat plate theory predicted because of the effect of the shear flow. The decrement in heating of the separated flow, relative to the corresponding attached flow, was found to compare well with the expected results.

Book Climate Change

Download or read book Climate Change written by A. Barrie Pittock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted in the scientific community that climate change is a reality, and that changes are happening with increasing rapidity. In this second edition, leading climate researcher Barrie Pittock revisits the effects that global warming is having on our planet, in light of ever-evolving scientific research. Presenting all sides of the arguments about the science and possible remedies, Pittock examines the latest analyses of climate change, such as new and alarming observations regarding Arctic sea ice, the recently published IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, and the policies of the new Australian Government and how they affect the implementation of climate change initiatives. New material focuses on massive investments in large-scale renewables, such as the kind being taken up in California, as well as many smaller-scale activities in individual homes and businesses which are being driven by both regulatory and market mechanisms. The book includes extensive endnotes with links to ongoing and updated information, as well as some new illustrations. While the message is clear that climate change is here (and in some areas, might already be having disastrous effects), there is still hope for the future, and the ideas presented here will inspire people to take action. Climate Change: The Science, Impacts and Solutions is an important reference for students in environmental or social sciences, policy makers, and people who are genuinely concerned about the future of our environment.
