Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely collection asks the reader to consider how society’s modern notion of humans as rational, isolated individuals has contributed to psychological and social problems and oppressive power structures. Experts from a range of disciplines offer a complex understanding of how humans are shaped by history, tradition, and institutions. Drawing upon the work of Lacan, Fanon, and Foucault, this text examines cultural memory, modern ideas of race and gender, the roles of symbolism and mythology, and neoliberalism’s impact on psychology. Through clinical vignettes and suggested applications, it demonstrates significant alternatives to the isolated individualism of Western philosophy and psychology. This interdisciplinary volume is essential reading for clinicians and anyone looking to augment their understanding of how human beings are shaped by the societies they inhabit.
Download or read book My Black Friend Says written by Heather S. Fleming and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Black Friends Says... is the book we need right now. Written as a series of short essays with pauses for reflection and journaling, MBFS... explores the issue of race in a very practical, inviting, and empowering way. This book will give readers the ability to tackle race issues from a position of knowledge and confidence. It teaches readers about the ways in which we develop biases, how to tackle those biases and associated emotions, and how to move forward without shame or fear. Though each essay addresses an individual issue related to inclusion and diversity in our society, the combined knowledge will allow people to see the nuances of racism, discrimination, and advocacy in America. With an appendix of suggested reading materials, study topics, and terms to know, this book provides you with all you need to begin your journey towards being a catalyst for change.Excerpt from the first essay, also titled "My Black Friend Says...": "Imagine this as a cross-country trip from New York to Los Angeles. Bringing your shame is like bringing your mattress from home with you on the trip, and every few miles, you have to stop and make sure it's still secure. It makes the journey impossibly long and delays everyone else who has joined in, as well. It's best to leave that mattress(shame) behind and experience all the new opportunities you'll find down the road. Some of those experiences will feel like a night at the Ritz Carlton; others will feel like a pallet on a forest floor. Experience. Learn. Reflect. Think. Fall in love with the journey and the people with which you share it." --Heather Fleming

Download or read book Twisted Unraveled written by Linda Rich and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stilton peers down at a lifeless body after his murderer dragged it to its final resting place. His spirit cannot rest until it determines who committed this heinous act. Meanwhile his wife, Heather, types away at his uncompleted novel. John had no known enemies. The only person present when he was hit by a snow shovel and a fatal sledgehammer blow was Heather. Why would she kill him? Political differences? Heather being a staunch liberal and he a conservative. The ebbing of their sex life? Something he discovered from her past and sister’s suicide in 1991? John cannot rest in peace until he can piece this together and exact revenge. John had just reached out to the Highland Falls City Clerk, Ardil Chin, to seek an answer to a clue from Heather’s past. Ardil, an aspiring writer, hadn’t fallen prey to the stereotypical conclusions of his murder. As a result, she will publish under the pseudonym Linda Rich the novel TWISTED that detailed what really occurred in the Ft. Montgomery hamlet. Upon fixing a rattling A/C vent in Ardil’s recently purchased home of the Stiltons, the real truth is uncovered. This sequel to TWISTED takes the reader on a journey through Heather’s earlier life shortly after her sister’s death. Through age regression therapy, tragic events that molded her persona are revealed. The psychological murder mystery keeps the reader on their toes as the book twists, turns and unravels what really caused the trail of dead bodies left in her wake.

Download or read book Motherload written by Ana Villalobos and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-09-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of economic anxiety, fear of terrorism, and marital uncertainty, insecurity has become a big part of life for many American mothers. With bases of security far from guaranteed, mothers are often seeking something they can count on. In this beautifully written and accessible book, Ana Villalobos shows how mothers frequently rely on the one thing that seems sure to them: the mother-child relationship. Based on over one hundred interviews with and observations of mothers—single or married, but all experiencing varying forms of insecurity in their lives—Villalobos finds that mothers overwhelmingly expect the mothering relationship to "make it all better" for themselves and their children. But there is a price to pay for loading this single relationship with such high expectations. Using detailed case studies, Villalobos shows how women's Herculean attempts to create various kinds of security through mothering often backfire, thereby exhausting mothers, deflecting their focus from other possible sources of security, and creating more stress. That stress is further exacerbated by dominant ideals about "good" mothering—ideals that are fraught with societal pressures and expectations that reach well beyond what mothers can actually do for their children. Pointing to hopeful alternatives, Villalobos shows how more realistic expectations about motherhood lead remarkably to greater security in families by prompting mothers to cast broader security nets, making conditions less stressful and—just as significantly—bringing greater joy in mothering.

Download or read book In the Company of Cars written by Sarah Redshaw and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been accepted that the social and cultural meanings of the car far exceed the practical need for mobility. This book marks the first attempt to contribute to road safety, considering, in depth, these meanings and the cultures of driving that are shaped by them. In the Company of Cars examines the perspectives that young people have on cars, and explores the broader social and cultural meanings of the car, the potential it is supposed to fulfil, and the anticipated benefits it offers to young drivers. From focus-group research conducted in Australia, the book takes up the views of young people on a range of topics, from media to car use to gender performance. The author looks at the ways in which driving has been defined by articulations of the car that emphasize valued features of the car-driver, such as gender, youthfulness, status, age, power, raciness, sexiness, ruggedness and competitiveness. The book takes a global perspective on mobility, considering the impact of cars and road safety policy on quality of life, and the value and significance of other modes of travel, in a range of countries.
