Download or read book Effects of High Temperature Argon Heat Treatment on Tensile Strength and Microstructure of BN SiC Coated SiC Fiber Preforms written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preforms of BN/SiC coated Hi-Nicalon and Sylramic SiC fibers were heat treated under 0.1 MPa argon pressure between 1000 deg to 1800 deg C for 1 and 100h. The effects of high temperature exposure on physical dimensions, weight, room temperature tensile strength, and microstructure of preforms have been studied. Both preforms showed shrinkage and weight loss, and microstructural changes beyond 1000 deg C. After 100 hr exposure, the Hi-Nicalon preforms showed strength degradation beyond 1200 deg C. The mechanisms of the strength degradation appear to be grain growth of the SiC fibers and crystallization of the BN coating. After 100 hr, the Sylramic preforms heat treated to 1000 deg C retained their as-produced strength while some of those heat-treated between 1000 deg and 1800 deg C showed strength degradation and others did not. At 1800 deg C, the ultimate tensile strength decreased with increasing time of exposure. Reasons for strength degradation of Sylramic preforms are being investigated.
Download or read book Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines written by Jürgen G. Heinrich and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several ceramic parts have already proven their suitability for serial application in automobile engines in very impressive ways, especially in Japan, the USA and in Germany. However, there is still a lack of economical quality assurance concepts. Recently, a new generation of ceramic components, for the use in energy, transportation and environment systems, has been developed. The efforts are more and more system oriented in this field. The only possibility to manage this complex issue in the future will be interdisciplinary cooperation. Chemists, physicists, material scientists, process engineers, mechanical engineers and engine manufacturers will have to cooperate in a more intensive way than ever before. The R&D activities are still concentrating on gas turbines and reciprocating engines, but also on brakes, bearings, fuel cells, batteries, filters, membranes, sensors and actuators as well as on shaping and cutting tools for low expense machining of ceramic components. This book summarizes the scientific papers of the 7th International Symposium "Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines". Some of the most fascinating new applications of ceramic meterials in energy, transportation and environment systems are presented. The proceedings shall lead to new ideas for interdisciplinary activities in the future.

Download or read book Heat Treatment Effects on Microstructure of SiC Fiber Preforms written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preforms of BN/SiC coated Sylramic SiC fibers were heat treated at 1420 deg, 1600 deg, and 1800 deg C in 0.1 MPa argon or at 1800 deg C in 103 MPa nitrogen for 1 h. Optical, SEM, and TEM techniques were used to analyze the effects of environmental exposure on constituent microstructure of the preforms. TEM analysis of the as-received preforms indicates that the CVI BN coating is predominantly amorphous with small amounts of microcrystalline BN grains, and that the SiC coating on top of the BN coating and SiC fibers is polycrystalline. With increasing temperature of exposure from 1420 deg to 1800 deg C, the preforms heat treated in argon showed increasing amounts of crystalline BN in the CVI BN coating, and coarsening of SiC grains in the CVI SiC coating and SiC fibers. On the other hand, the preforms heal treated in 103 MPa nitrogen at 1800 deg C for 1 h showed microstructural changes inside the fiber tows similar to those heat treated at 1800 deg C in 0.1 MPa argon for 1 h, but the same preforms on the outer periphery of the tows showed reaction between nitrogen and the CVI SiC coating to form Si3N4.
Download or read book Environmental Barrier Coatings written by Kang N. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global increase in air travel will require commercial vehicles to be more efficient than ever before. Advanced engine hot section materials are a key technology required to keep fuel consumption and emission to a minimum in next-generation gas turbines. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the most promising material to revolutionize gas turbine hot section materials technology because of their excellent high‐temperature properties. Rapid surface recession due to volatilization by water vapor is the Achilles heel of CMCs. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) is an enabling technology for CMCs, since it protects CMCs from water vapor. The first CMC component entered into service in 2016 in a commercial engine, and more CMC components are scheduled to follow within the next few years. One of the most difficult challenges to CMC components is EBC durability, because failure of EBC leads to a rapid reduction in CMC component life. Key contributors to EBC failure include recession, oxidation, degradation by calcium‐aluminum‐magnesium silicates (CMAS) deposits, thermal and thermo‐mechanical strains, particle erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Novel EBC chemistries, creative EBC designs, and robust processes are required to meet EBC durability challenges. Engine-relevant testing, characterization, and lifing methods need to be developed to improve EBC reliability. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent advances in EBC technology to address these issues. In particular, topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: • Novel EBC chemistries and designs; • Processing including plasma spray, suspension plasma spray, solution precursor plasma spray, slurry process, PS-PVD, EB-PVD, and CVD; • Testing, characterization, and modeling; • Lifing.

Book excerpt: Sintering is the process of forming materials and components from a powder under the action of thermal energy. It is a key materials science subject: most ceramic materials and many specialist metal powder products for use in key industries such as electronics, automotive and aerospace are formed this way. Written by one of the leading experts in the field, this book offers an unrivalled introduction to sintering and sintering processes for students of materials science and engineering, and practicing engineers in industry. The book is unique in providing a complete grounding in the principles of sintering and equal coverage of the three key sintering processes: densification, grain growth and microstructure. Students and professional engineers alike will be attracted by the emphasis on developing a detailed understanding of the theory and practical processes of sintering, the balanced coverage of ceramic and metal sintering, and the accompanying examination questions with selected solutions. - Delivering unrivalled depth of coverage on the basis of sintering, science, including thermodynamics and polycrystalline microstructure. - Unique in its balanced coverage of the three key sintering elements - densification, grain growth and microstructure. - A key reference for students and engineers in materials science and engineering, accompanied by examination questions and selected solutions.
