Book Investigation of a Ground source Heat Pump Retrofit to an Electrically Heated Multi family Building Final Report

Download or read book Investigation of a Ground source Heat Pump Retrofit to an Electrically Heated Multi family Building Final Report written by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. External Research Program and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s, electric baseboard heating systems were a common space heating approach in multi-unit residential buildings due to low installation costs, minimal use of interior space and the relatively low price of electricity. As a result, approximately 50% of apartment buildings in Canada have electric baseboard heating. However, rapidly increasing costs of electricity, concerns over environmental damage associated with conventional generating stations and the very age of most electric baseboards in apartment buildings will necessitate the development of alternative space heating strategies. This is a report of research to investigate the technical potential and economic benefits of retrofitting electrically heated apartment buildings with ground-source heat pumps. The report presents results of a literature and web search and review of available components and equipment suitable for the application, and analyses the most promising combination using an example building complex in the Greater Toronto area. Both the cases of no benefit and full benefit for central air conditioning are considered. Comparisons are drawn with retrofitting natural gas heating systems under the same circumstances. Conclusions and recommendations for new component development are identified and the economic results are as attractive under some circumstances as natural gas heating system retrofits.

Book Building America Case Study

Book excerpt: Although heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) have gained significant attention in recent years as a high efficiency electric water heating solution for single family homes, central HPWHs for commercial or multi-family applications are not as well documented in terms of measured performance and cost effectiveness. To evaluate this technology, the Alliance for Residential Building Innovation team monitored the performance of a 10.5 ton central HPWH installed on a student apartment building at the West Village Zero Net Energy Community in Davis, California. Monitoring data collected over a 16-month period were then used to validate a TRNSYS simulation model. The TRNSYS model was then used to project performance in different climates using local electric rates. Results of the study indicate that after some initial commissioning issues, the HPWH operated reliably with an annual average efficiency of 2.12 (Coefficient of Performance). The observed efficiency was lower than the unit's rated efficiency, primarily due to the fact that the system rarely operated under steady-state conditions. Changes in the system configuration, storage tank sizing, and control settings would likely improve the observed field efficiency. Modeling results suggest significant energy savings relative to electric storage water heating systems (typical annual efficiencies around 0.90) providing for typical simple paybacks of six to ten years without any incentives. The economics versus gas water heating are currently much more challenging given the current low natural gas prices in much of the country. Increased market size for this technology would benefit cost effectiveness and spur greater technology innovation.

Book Energy Performance of Residential Buildings

Download or read book Energy Performance of Residential Buildings written by Mat Santamouris and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Rating is a crucial consideration in modern building design, affirmed by the new EC Directive on the energy performance of buildings. Energy represents a high percentage of the running costs of a building, and has a significant impact on the comfort of the occupants. This book represents detailed information on energy rating of residential buildings, covering: * Theoretical and experimental energy rating techniques: reviewing the state of the art and offering guidance on the in situ identification of the UA and gA values of buildings. * New experimental protocols to evaluate energy performance: detailing a flexible new approach based on actual energy consumption. Data are collected using the Billed Energy Protocol (BEP) and Monitored Energy Protocol (MEP) * Energy Normalization techniques: describing established methods plus a new Climate Severity Index, which offers significant benefits to the user. Also included in this book are audit forms and a CD-ROM for applying the new rating methodology. The software, prepared in Excel, is easy to use, can be widely applied using both deterministic and experimental methods, and can be adapted to national peculiarities and energy policy criteria. Energy Performance of Residential Buildings offers full and clear treatment of the key issues and will be an invaluable source of information for energy experts, building engineers, architects, physicists, project managers and local authorities. The book stems from the EC-funded SAVE project entitled EUROCLASS. Participating institutes included: * University of Athens, Greece * Belgium Building Research Institute, Belgium * University of Seville, Spain * Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden

Book Nordic heating and cooling

Download or read book Nordic heating and cooling written by Patronen, Jenni and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the EU Commission, the heating and cooling sector must sharply reduce its energy consumption and cut its use of fossil fuel in order to meet the EU's climate and energy goals. In the Nordic countries, a lot of effort has already been put to make heat production and consumption energy efficient and to decrease the emissions. To disseminate these experiences and good practices wider in Europe, and to identify further needs for co-operation, this study attempts to identify the common approaches of the Nordic countries towards the EU’s heating and cooling strategy and Winter Package regulation. This report describes the results of the work based on Pöyry’s analysis of the current heating and cooling sector practices and regulation in the Nordic countries, and interviews of the regulators and energy industry representatives from each country.
