Aarón Medrano has been haunted by the onstage persona of his favorite DJ ever since his mother passed away. He seems to know all of Aarón’s deepest fears, like how his brain doesn’t work the way it should and that’s why his brother and father seem to be pushing him away. He thinks his ticket out is a scholarship to the prestigious Acadia School of Music. That is, if he can avoid blowing his audition. Mia Villanueva has a haunting of her own and it’s the only family heirloom her parents left her: doubt. It’s the reason she can’t overcome her stage fright or believe that her music is worth making. Even though her trumpet teacher tells her she has a gift, she’s not sure if she’ll ever figure out how to use it or if she’s even deserving of it in the first place. When Aarón and Mia cross paths, Aarón sees a chance to get close to the girl he’s had a crush on for years and to finally feel connected to someone since losing his mother. Mia sees a chance to hold herself accountable by making them both face their fears, and hopefully make their dreams come true. But soon they’ll realize there’s something much scarier than getting up on stage—falling in love with a broken heart.

He offers this literary exposition of the nature of the human heart and the intriguing emotional reactions we express towards the obstacles, successes, and failures of life, hoping to leave readers refreshed by a complete showering of poetic utopia. In the dialect of poetic lingo, Donaldson intends to spur discussions concerning the controversial issues of life with language creatively written in such an untailored fashion as to create a sentiment of tranquil literary bliss.

Book The Jewish Experience in Classical Music

Download or read book The Jewish Experience in Classical Music written by Alexander Tentser and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shostakovich and Asia – this unique combination of two highly dissimilar composers allows us to explore the breadth of influence of traditional Jewish culture on Western classical music in the 20th century and beyond. These two composers speak in different musical languages and have very different personalities. Shostakovich, a 20th century Russian composer living under totalitarian Soviet rule, and Asia, a contemporary Jewish-American composer, are nevertheless connected through time by the common thread of Jewish music. The first part of this book deals with Shostakovich and his incorporation of traditional Jewish elements in his music. In recent times there has been a great deal of controversy concerning Shostakovich’s “dissident” outlook and his critical attitude towards the Soviet regime. The contributors to this volume, however, have chosen to focus on the more humane qualities of Shostakovich’s personality, his honesty and courage, which enabled him in difficult times to express through his works Jewish torment and suffering under both the Soviet and Nazi regimes. The second part of this book is dedicated to the music of Daniel Asia and to his philosophical and religious identification with Judaism. Of particular importance is the composer’s opening article, a valuable testament to the religious and aesthetic beliefs that inspired him to create his most significant symphonic work, the Fifth Symphony, Of Songs and Psalms.

Book Your Symphony of Selves

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Fadiman
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2020-08-04
  • ISBN : 164411027X
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Your Symphony of Selves written by James Fadiman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why you are a different you at different times and how that’s both normal and healthy • Reveals that each of us is made up of multiple selves, any of which can come to the forefront in different situations • Offers examples of healthy multiple selves from psychology, neuroscience, pop culture, literature, and ancient cultures and traditions • Explores how to harmonize our selves and learn to access whichever one is best for a given situation Offering groundbreaking insight into the dynamic nature of personality, James Fadiman and Jordan Gruber show that each of us is comprised of distinct, autonomous, and inherently valuable “selves.” They also show that honoring each of these selves is a key to improved ways of living, loving, and working. Explaining that it is normal to have multiple selves, the authors offer insights into why we all are inconsistent at times, allowing us to become more accepting of the different parts of who we and other people are. They explore, through extensive reviews, how the concept of healthy multiple selves has been supported in science, popular culture, spirituality, philosophy, art, literature, and ancient traditions and cite well-known people, including David Bowie and Beyoncé, who describe accessing another self at a pivotal point in their lives to resolve a pressing challenge. Instead of seeing the existence of many selves as a flaw or pathology, the authors reveal that the healthiest people, mentally and emotionally, are those that have naturally learned to appreciate and work in harmony with their own symphony of selves. They identify “the Single Self Assumption” as the prime reason why the benefits of having multiple selves has been ignored. This assumption holds that we each are or ought to be a single consistent self, yet we all recognize, in reality, that we are different in different situations. Offering a pragmatic approach, the authors show how you can prepare for situations by shifting to the appropriate self, rather than being “switched” or “triggered” into a sub-optimal part of who you are. They also show how recognizing your selves provides increased access to skills, talent, and creativity; enhanced energy; and improved healing and pain management. Appreciating your diverse selves will give you more empathy toward yourself and others. By harmonizing your symphony of selves, you can learn to be “in the right mind at the right time” more often.

Book Raga Harmony Harmonic Structures and Tonalities in Indian Classical Music

Download or read book Raga Harmony Harmonic Structures and Tonalities in Indian Classical Music written by L. Subramaniam and published by Westland Non-Fiction. This book was released on with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW ERA IN CLASSICAL MUSIC UNVEILED BY DR L. SUBRAMANIAM. Dr L. Subramaniam, who’s been called ‘arguably the greatest violinist in the history of Indian music’, is also one of the most formally inventive musicians of our time. A polymorphous talent, he is not bound by genres or geographies nor fear of the untried and uncharted. It is in this spirit that, as a young student, Dr Subramaniam set about creating a system that would integrate the melodic nature of the Indian raga system with the harmonic structure of Western classical music. What those early years of study—tried and tested over the decades—led to was the possibility of orchestral compositions for Indian ragas, evoking their mood within the rich sound of symphony orchestras. Raga Harmony unveils Dr Subramaniam’s revolutionary thirty-six-scale concept that will allow compositions by Indian composers based on Indian ragas to be performed by some of the most prestigious orchestras across the globe. The use of this system enables the generation of lush harmonies that are not only uncommon and pleasing, but also intricate and intellectually intriguing.

Book Melodramatic Voices Understanding Music Drama

Download or read book Melodramatic Voices Understanding Music Drama written by Sarah Hibberd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genre of mélodrame à grand spectacle that emerged in the boulevard theatres of Paris in the 1790s - and which was quickly exported abroad - expressed the moral struggle between good and evil through a drama of heightened emotions. Physical gesture, mise en scène and music were as important in communicating meaning and passion as spoken dialogue. The premise of this volume is the idea that the melodramatic aesthetic is central to our understanding of nineteenth-century music drama, broadly defined as spoken plays with music, operas and other hybrid genres that combine music with text and/or image. This relationship is examined closely, and its evolution in the twentieth century in selected operas, musicals and films is understood as an extension of this nineteenth-century aesthetic. The book therefore develops our understanding of opera in the context of melodrama's broader influence on musical culture during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book will appeal to those interested in film studies, drama, theatre and modern languages as well as music and opera.
