Unhealthy Helping contains psychology-based explanations and solutions for people who help and give in ways that are harmful to themselves, others, or their relationships. Psychology professor and Psychology Today blogger Shawn Meghan Burn explores codependent and dysfunctional helping and giving relationships, how to tell the difference between unhealthy and healthy helping and giving, the social and psychological sources of codependence and unhealthy helping and giving, and how even the best intentions can go unexpectedly wrong (and what to do about it). Unhealthy Helping will help you find that helping and giving sweet spot where your help is truly helpful and your giving is healthy for others, your relationships, and for you."--Back cover.

Book Healthy Eating in Schools

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine P. Cook-Cottone
  • Publisher : Applying Psychology in the Sch
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9781433813009
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Healthy Eating in Schools written by Catherine P. Cook-Cottone and published by Applying Psychology in the Sch. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern over increased childhood obesity has spurred various school-based interventions. However, these interventions often have little positive effect and may inadvertently contribute to unhealthy behaviours during weight loss attempts. Indeed, a general emphasis on appearance and weight (rather than health) can promote eating disordered behaviours. This book provides a conceptual model for understanding both obesity and eating disordered behaviours. Specifically, it advocates for body acceptance and intuitive eating -- a flexible, healthy eating behaviour involving awareness of the body's hunger and satiety cues. Within this context, the chapters review evidence-based school interventions in nutrition, self-regulation, exercise, body acceptance, media literacy, and mindfulness. Guidance is also provided for identifying, referring, and supporting students with emerging eating disorders. Without empirically supported guidance, schools run the risk of implementing ineffective or harmful programming in an effort to do good. Thus, this book is a much needed resource for teachers, administrators, counsellors, nurses, and other school personnel.

Book The Emotionally Healthy Child

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While growing up has never been easy, today's world presents kids and their parents with unprecedented challenges. The upside, posits Maureen Healy, is a widespread acknowledgment that emotional health, resilience, and equilibrium can be learned and strengthened. Healy is an expert on teaching skills that address the high sensitivity, big emotions, and hyper energy she herself experienced growing up. Three simple steps are key — Stop, Calm, and Make Smarter Choices. While not always easy, these steps are powerful, and Healy shows readers exactly how to implement them. Children move from acting out or shutting down, experiencing frequent physical symptoms such as head- and stomachaches, or hurting themselves or others, to recognizing they are being triggered, feeling their emotions, and using mindfulness strategies to respond from a calmer place.

Relationships are rife with disappointment--but they are also the primary source of personal happiness. So it is no surprise that the number one question Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott hear over and over is, What's the single most important thing you can do for your relationships? After over twenty-five years of researching, writing, and speaking on this subject, in Healthy Me, Healthy Us the Parrotts have whittled down their answer to the truth contained in this single sentence: if you try to build intimacy with another person before you have gotten whole on your own, all your relationships become an attempt to complete yourself. Relationship skills, tips, and tactics? Sure. They have their place. But meaningful relationships--the kind we all long for--grow from something deeper, something stronger, something that has more to do with being than doing. This groundbreaking book provides the three hallmarks to psychological, emotional, and spiritual health, pointing the way to true and lasting wholeness that can revolutionize every relationship you attempt to build.
