Book Becoming British Columbia

Download or read book Becoming British Columbia written by John Belshaw and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming British Columbia is the first comprehensive, demographic history of British Columbia. Investigating critical moments in the demographic record and linking demographic patterns to larger social and political questions, it shows how biology, politics, and history conspired with sex, death, and migration to create a particular kind of society. John Belshaw overturns the widespread tendency to associate population growth with progress. He reveals that the province has a long tradition of thinking and acting vigorously in ways meant to control and shape biological communities of humans, and suggests that imperialism, race, class, and gender have historically situated population issues at the centre of public consciousness in British Columbia.

Download or read book Risk and Responsibility written by William Leiss and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994-06-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Leiss and Christina Chociolko explain that controversies arise in part because many participants try to avoid assuming full responsibility for the consequences of the risk-taking they advocate. For example, one can indulge in the pleasure of nicotine addiction despite an awareness of the health risks and count on a publicly funded health care system to assume the responsibility for dealing with the resulting illnesses. They provide detailed case studies of the controversies over the effects of exposure to power frequency electric and magnetic fields and to the chemical pesticides alar and antisapstains. Shorter studies of exposure to tobacco, formaldehyde, and the pesticide alachlor are also presented. The authors address the difficulties of arriving at reliable scientific estimates of risk in such controversial areas, and the impact of this uncertainty on disagreements among different interest groups over how to manage those risks responsibly. In conclusion they attempt to delineate conditions under which consensus on the assessment and management of environmental health risks might be achieved among a wide range of interest groups. Risk and Responsibility will be of specific interest to policymakers and analysts, activists, and environmentalists, and of general interest to those working in relevant industries and members of the legal profession.

Book The British Columbia Atlas of Wellness

Download or read book The British Columbia Atlas of Wellness written by Leslie T. Foster and published by University of Victoria Department of. This book was released on 2007 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas defines, measures, and maps wellness for the Province of British Columbia. Using mostly readily available data, the atlas aims to focus on what is right and well with respect to health, instead of taking the traditional approach of emphasizing what is sick and wrong. Maps inform about health regions that, for example, are the most smoke-free, have the largest number of recreational centres and playing fields per capita, or score highest on self-reported wellness indicators. The atlas covers themes related to health determinants, smoke-free environments, food security, physical activity, healthy weights, and wellness outcomes using more than 270 maps, differentiating many of the themes by gender as well as age categories. A refreshing and fascinating look at health and wellness taking an asset approach that shows that the glass is more than half-full! The BC Atlas of Wellness was created in partnership with the University of Victoria Geography Department. It springs from the ActNow BC initiative, which was introduced in early 2005 to encourage British Columbians to make healthy lifestyle choices to improve their quality of life, reduce the incidence of preventable chronic disease, and reduce the burden on the health care system."
