Book Health Education in Rural Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Health Education in Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by J. Mace Andress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Education in Rural Schools The winning of the war has long commanded the atten tion of the American people. Our resources have been spent lavishly to make secure our liberties and the freedom of the world. Such a supreme crisis in our history revealed inspir ing patriotism, but also a pathetic weakness in our citizens. Out of 06 men who were examined on the first draft, a vast army of men were rejected on physical grounds. A large proportion of these physical defects might have been corrected or prevented if the schools had been doing their part to train children to conserve and improve their health. Such a serious flaw in public education must challenge the efforts of educators throughout the land. Several States, realizing the gravity of the situation, have recently passed laws making physical education obligatory and requiring a more extensive and practical teaching of hygiene.' The war has compelled us to recognize, as we never did before, the fundamental importance of health education as preparedness, not only for military service, but also for happy and efficient participation in civil life. Contrary to tradition and popular belief, country children have been found to be as defective physically and in many cases more defective than city children. Comparatively little has been done so far for the health of country children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Improvement of the Rural School Classic Reprint written by Harlan Updegraff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement of the Rural School The improvement of the rural school is, at the present time, one of our most important educational problems. Although it does not present the same aspects in every state, no section is freed from the responsibility of endeavoring to, find its solution. It is not a new problem. Ever since the time of James G. Carter, and of Horace Mann, educators have called attention to the deficiencies of the coun try school. The counts in the indictment which have been brought against it through all these years differ but little, unattractive sites, miserable buildings, insufficient equipment, poorly prepared and poorly paid teachers, inadequate and incom petent supervision, unevenly distributed enrollment, irregular attendance, meager curriculum, and a poorly conducted school. Although it is true that much progress has been made in these particulars during the past three - quarters of a century, and although in certain localities conditions are con sidered fairly satisfactory, the need for reform is more strongly and more generally expressed to - day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Community Health The historical approach, which presents the health problems of early settlers in America, has many ad vantages. It provides a natural presentation of country as well as city health problems, or rural as well as munic ipal sanitation. It presents a perspective of the changes in the mode of living during the last few generations, and, what is perhaps more important, it allows the pupil to see the origin and need of town and city government in the maintenance of health. The health-education program at this grade level stresses continued training in the habits of healthful living as a primary objective. Suggestions for the im portant and regular program of health-training are given in Chapter I. It is assumed that these suggestions will be adapted to local needs. Book The Story of Rural School Consolidation in Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Rural School Consolidation in Indiana Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Rural School Consolidation in Indiana No State in the American union has remained more continuously in the educational spotlight than Indiana. The elements of this continuity have been both practical and romantic, but unquestionably the state's crowning educational achievement has been the movement to divorce Mud from Mathematics - to lift the rural school child from a mud-lathered highway into a comfortable conveyance and transport him to a modern, sanitary school house wherein he could have his mind on 7 x 1 = 7, instead of on the mud that made his boots a burden. Indiana has been almost theatrical in her educational progress. In 1916 the Hoosier commonwealth will be one hundred years old. Within that century the state has marched from the tents of plebeianism into proud recognition as a center of learning. Posey county, now one of the strongest intellectual units in all Hoosierdom, once had a comedy rating as the illiteracy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for a Program for Health Teaching: In the Elementary Schools Probably no field of education within the last two years has shown more originality and vitality than that of health education. Experiments have been made not only by individual teachers but by groups of teachers on a large scale. In the midst of such inter esting developments the need of a sound program of health educa tion extending through the grades has become insistent. In this pioneer field certain ideals, principles, and methods have earned merited approval, but the work done has been limited to particular problems. Every serious student of the health situation feels this keenly, but the time is not yet ripe for a definite and complete course of study in health teaching. The whole field is still in a somewhat uncertain state. Educators in general have lost faith in the old fashioned methods.
