This book was released on 1998-10-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Children is a comprehensive, easy-to-read analysis of the relationship between health insurance and access to care. The book addresses three broad questions: How is children's health care currently financed? Does insurance equal access to care? How should the nation address the health needs of this vulnerable population? America's Children explores the changing role of Medicaid under managed care; state-initiated and private sector children's insurance programs; specific effects of insurance status on the care children receive; and the impact of chronic medical conditions and special health care needs. It also examines the status of "safety net" health providers, including community health centers, children's hospitals, school-based health centers, and others and reviews the changing patterns of coverage and tax policy options to increase coverage of private-sector, employer-based health insurance. In response to growing public concerns about uninsured children, last year Congress voted to provide $24 billion over five years for new state insurance initiatives. This volume will serve as a primer for concerned federal policymakers and regulators, state agency officials, health plan decisionmakers, health care providers, children's health advocates, and researchers.

Book Take Me Home

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jill Duerr Berrick
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2008-08-27
  • ISBN : 0199717419

Download or read book Take Me Home written by Jill Duerr Berrick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a profound crisis in the United States' foster care system, Jill Duerr Berrick writes in this expertly researched, passionately written book. No state has passed the federally mandated Child and Family Service Review; two-thirds of the state systems have faced class-action lawsuits demanding change; and most tellingly, well over half of all children who enter foster care never go home. The field of child welfare has lost its way and is neglecting its fundamental responsibility to the most vulnerable children and families in America. The family stories Berrick weaves throughout the chapters provide a vivid backdrop for her statistics. Amanda, raised in foster care, began having children of her own while still a teen and lost them to the system when she became addicted to drugs. Tracy, brought up by her schizophrenic single mother, gave birth to the first of eight children at age fourteen and saw them all shuffled through foster care as she dealt drugs and went to prison. Both they and the other individuals that Berrick features spent years without adequate support from social workers or the government before finally achieving a healthier life; many people never do. But despite the clear crisis in child welfare, most calls for reform have focused on unproven prevention methods, not on improving the situation for those already caught in the system. Berrick argues that real child welfare reform will only occur when the centerpiece of child welfare - reunification, permanency, and foster care - is reaffirmed. Take Me Home reminds us that children need long-term caregivers who can help them develop and thrive. When troubled parents can't change enough to permit reunification, alternative permanency options must be pursued. And no reform will matter for the hundreds of thousands of children entering foster care each year in America unless their experience of out-of-home care is considerably better than the one many now experience. Take Me Home offers prescriptions for policy change and strategies for parents, social workers, and judges struggling with permanency decisions. Readers will come away reinvigorated in their thinking about how to get children to the homes they need.

Book MANY CALIFORNIANS STRUGGLE TO PAY FOR HEALTH CARE New Report Recommends that Any Health Care Reform Include Adequate Subsidies for Californians

Download or read book MANY CALIFORNIANS STRUGGLE TO PAY FOR HEALTH CARE New Report Recommends that Any Health Care Reform Include Adequate Subsidies for Californians written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report, "What Does It Take for a Family to Afford to Pay for Health Care?" (available at www.cbp.org and www.healthpolicy.ucla.edu) recommends that health care reform proposals - such as those proposed by the Governor and Democratic legislative leaders - ensure that families can realistically afford premiums and out-of-pocket costs, such as copayments and deductibles. [...] The report recommends that proposals fully subsidize health care coverage for those who earn up to 200 percent of the poverty line ($41,300 for a family of four) because the cost of housing, food, and other necessities leaves these families with few or no resources to contribute toward health care costs. [...] The report also determines that families need incomes near 300 percent of the poverty line ($61,950 for a family of four) just to afford typical health care costs. [...] "In the debate over health care reform, we can't lose sight of what California families realistically need and can afford," said David Carroll, research director with the California Budget Project, a Sacramento- based nonpartisan public policy research group, and joint author of the report. [...] "Families should not have to choose between paying their rent and taking a sick child to the doctor." "People should be able to afford to use, not simply buy, health care coverage," said Dylan Roby, a joint author of the report and research scientist with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, which is based in the UCLA School of Public Health and affiliated with the UCLA School of Public Aff.

Book California Health Care Almanac

Download or read book California Health Care Almanac written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Over the past five years, California made significant strides in reducing the number of uninsured children from an estimated 778,000 in 2003 to 683,000 children in 2007, a 12 percent decline. This improvement in children's coverage was due in part to Medi-Cal and Healthy Families expansions, the introduction of Healthy Kids programs in several counties, and effective outreach and enrollment efforts. However, gains in children's coverage have slowed in recent years. Children's Health Coverage Facts and Figures provides an overview of trends in children's coverage and insurance programs in the state. Key findings include: The proportion * of children without health insurance continued to decline through 2007, though the pace of improvement has slowed. * Nearly 80 percent of California's uninsured children are eligible for coverage under either Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, or Healthy Kids. * Medi-Cal and Healthy Families are key sources of coverage for children in low-income households that together have closed the coverage gap among families with incomes up to 250 percent of the federal poverty level. * Healthy Kids programs are also important for children's coverage. Twenty-four counties operate Healthy Kids programs and four others rely on California Kids. * Children are less likely to have employment-based coverage than adults and are more likely to be enrolled in public programs in California. The future of children's health insurance coverage in California is uncertain. On the one hand, California's economic downturn and budget crisis will likely make it difficult to increase the number of insured children. On the other, Congress and the President reauthorized the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provides new policy options for expanding coverage. In addition, Congress and the Obama Administration are working on national health care reform, which if enacted, would likely benefit children in California. In this presentation, children are defined as people between the ages of 0 and 18, unless otherwise noted.

Book Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination

Download or read book Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide benefits based on disability: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. This report analyzes health care utilizations as they relate to impairment severity and SSA's definition of disability. Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination identifies types of utilizations that might be good proxies for "listing-level" severity; that is, what represents an impairment, or combination of impairments, that are severe enough to prevent a person from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience.
