Book Development of a Nutrition Education Workbook for Local Regional and Over the road OTR Truck Drivers

Download or read book Development of a Nutrition Education Workbook for Local Regional and Over the road OTR Truck Drivers written by Ashley Lynn Priest (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Commercial truck drivers are at a considerable disadvantage when it comes to healthy eating and exercise while at work and during downtime. Consequently, truck drivers face high rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease risk factors. The purpose of this project was to develop a nutrition curriculum in the form of a workbook for local, regional, and over-the-road (OTR) truck drivers to be used as a stand-alone resource or as part of a workplace health promotion program. The goal of this workbook is to provide information on general nutrition and healthy eating patterns, nutrition for disease prevention, estimating nutrition needs, food purchasing, safety, and meal preparation, physical activity, and goal setting, all tailored to the needs of truck drivers. Curriculum development was based on a literature review on the health status of truck drivers and topics identified in an evidenced-based workplace health promotion program assessment tool. This workbook was reviewed for alignment with current evidence and relevancy by a professional committee, including two Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) who work in health promotion, and one truck driver. This workbook is one resource that truck drivers can use to improve their nutrition knowledge and health behaviors if motivated to do so. Future work could include the development of a web or app-based nutrition program for truck drivers to focus on knowledge or research to improve the food choice environment at truck stops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long hours, low wages, and unsafe workplaces characterized sweatshops a hundred years ago. These same conditions plague American trucking today. Sweatshops on Wheels: Winners and Losers in Trucking Deregulation exposes the dark side of government deregulation in America's interstate trucking industry. In the years since deregulation in 1980, median earnings have dropped 30% and most long-haul truckers earn less than half of pre-regulation wages. Work weeks average more than sixty hours. Today, America's long-haul truckers are working harder and earning less than at any time during the last four decades. Written by a former long-haul trucker who now teaches industrial relations at Wayne State University, Sweatshops on Wheels raises crucial questions about the legacy of trucking deregulation in America and casts provocative new light on the issue of government deregulation in general.

Book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety

Download or read book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book Mookie

Download or read book Mookie written by Mookie Wilson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WITH NEW UPDATES FOR THIS EDITION! They said it was the “Curse of the Bambino.” They said “the bad guys won.” Now, for the first time in trade paperback, one of baseball’s all-time good guys, New York Mets legend Mookie Wilson, tells his side of the story—from the ground ball through Bill Buckner’s legs that capped the miraculous 1986 World Series Game Six rally against the Boston Red Sox to the rise and fall of a team that boasted such outsize personalities as Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Dwight Gooden, Gary Carter, Lenny Dykstra, and Davey Johnson. Growing up in rural South Carolina in the 1960s, Mookie took to heart the lessons of his father, a diligent sharecropper who believed in the abiding power of faith—and taught his son the game that would change his life. When Mookie landed in Shea Stadium in 1980, the Mets were a perennial cellar-dweller overshadowed by the crosstown Yankees. But inspired by Mookie’s legendary hustle, they would soon become the toast of New York. And even when their off-field antics—made famous by a contingency of the team called “the Scum Bunch”—eclipsed their on-field successes, Mookie stayed above the fray. In 1986, the Mets were a juggernaut, winning 108 games during the regular season and edging the Houston Astros for the National League pennant following a grueling 16-inning Game Six classic. In the World Series against Boston, in an epic at-bat that led to the Buckner error, Mookie would ignite a fire under the Mets, helping to force a Game Seven. New York would win to become World Champions. In an era when role models in sports were hard to come by, some tarnished by their own hubris and greed, Mookie Wilson remained the exception: a man of humility and honor when it mattered the most. WITH A FOREWORD BY KEITH HERNANDEZ
