Book excerpt: A true pioneer and respected elder in ecological recovery and sustainability shares effective solutions he has designed and implemented. A stand-out from the sea of despairing messages about climate change, well-known sustainability elder John Todd, who has taught, mentored, and inspired such well-known names in the field as Janine Benyus, Bill McKibben, and Paul Hawken, chronicles the different ecological interventions he has created over the course of his career. Each chapter offers a workable engineering solution to an existing environmental problem: healing the aftermath of mountain-top removal and valley-fill coal mining in Appalachia, using windmills and injections of bacteria to restore the health of a polluted New England pond, working with community members in a South African village to protect an important river. A mix of both success stories and concrete suggestions for solutions to tackle as yet unresolved issues, Todd's narrative provides an important addition to the conversation about specific ways we can address the planetary crisis. Eighty-five color photos and images illustrate Todd's concepts. This is a refreshingly hopeful, proactive book and also a personal story that covers a known practitioner's groundbreaking career.

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Healing Earths written by W. Rudolph Reinbacher and published by 1st Book Library. This book was released on 2003 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRAVELS OF THE PRINCE is a narrative poem divided into five parts or Provenances. It is a fictionalized yet to some extent, parallel history told as a mythic tale, but with shadowy references to historical times, places, and events. The first part, "The Provenance of Darkness" is a kind of prehistory, the second suggests the Orient, the third, Greece, the forth, Rome, the fifth, the Modern Era. The principal characters, Prince Krishna, his friend, Baladev, (referred to as Dog, Sun, Weird), his enemy, Kaliya, (refered to as Snake, Python, Dissident) live in a timeless world in which events occur in a somewhat circular rather than linear way. The story begins when Prince Krishna, son of the Great Khan ruler of the Seven Realms that constitute the Empire, leaves his father's castle and against his father's wishes, begins a long adventurous journey from one realm to the next. This apparently rebellious action of the Prince, inspires Kaliya, the messianic leader of the autochthonous peoples, to rebel against the Empire and attack Baladev, Commander of the Imperial Army. New characters now appear, the Lords of the Seven Realms: Hiranyaksha of the Golden Eye, "the jewel-flashing dandy", Lord of the Second Realm, Kaliya's man; Phoibos Iskander, Duke of the Third realm, "a boy well made and fatal"; Arjuna Beak-o'-Bronze, Duke of the Fourth Realm; Narada "of the unhappy Consciousness, Lord of the Fifth Realm; Orlando, the Alchemist, Lord of the Sixth Realm; Hyperion, Lord of the Seventh Realm, "Held a secret so intense that no one dared to covet it". The almost continuous war that ensues between Kaliya and Baladev is destined to involve all of the Seven Realms as first one side, then the other appear to be the victor, each side hoping to enlist the sympathies of the Prince. Whereas the Khan is an enlightened monarch with democratic ideals, Kaliya's followers are of a static society, still mired in the past. On another level the war could be regarded as more a symbolic conflict between the mind-set of antiquity and the enduring quest of the individual for freedom of the creative spirit. The Prince, who has attachments for both Baladev and Kaliya, wavers between their opposing points of view. In the end, however, events bring him back, though under cloudy circumstances, to his father's castle at the place called Worldsend.

Book excerpt: Millions of acres of land have been contaminated by pesticides, improperly handled chemicals, dirty energy projects, toxic waste, and other pollutants in the United States alone. This toxic legacy impacts the environment, our health, our watersheds, and land that could otherwise be used to grow healthy local food and medicines. Conventional clean-up techniques employed by government and industry are tremendously expensive and resource-intensive and can cause further damage. More and more communities find themselves increasingly unable to rely on those companies and governments who created the problems to step in and provide solutions. Earth Repair describes a host of powerful grassroots bioremediation techniques, including: Microbial remediation—using microorganisms to break down and bind contaminants Phytoremediation—using plants to extract, bind, and transform toxins Mycoremediation—using fungi to clean up contaminated soil and water Packed with valuable, firsthand information from visionaries in the field, Earth Repair empowers communities and individuals to take action and heal contaminated and damaged land. Encompassing everything from remediating and regenerating abandoned city lots for urban farmers and gardeners to recovering from environmental disasters and industrial catastrophes such as oil spills and nuclear fallout, this fertile toolbox is essential reading for anyone who wishes to transform environmental despair into constructive action. Leila Darwish is a community organizer, urban gardener, and permaculture designer with a focus on using grassroots bioremediation to address environmental justice issues in communities struggling with toxic contamination of their land and drinking water.

Book excerpt: An impassioned call to heal the wounds of our planet and ourselves through the tenets of our spiritual traditions, from a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize It is so easy, in our modern world, to feel disconnected from the physical earth. Despite dire warnings and escalating concern over the state of our planet, many people feel out of touch with the natural world. Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai has spent decades working with the Green Belt Movement to help women in rural Kenya plant—and sustain—millions of trees. With their hands in the dirt, these women often find themselves empowered and “at home” in a way they never did before. Maathai wants to impart that feeling to everyone, and believes that the key lies in traditional spiritual values: love for the environment, self-betterment, gratitude and respect, and a commitment to service. While educated in the Christian tradition, Maathai draws inspiration from many faiths, celebrating the Jewish mandate tikkun olam (“repair the world”) and renewing the Japanese term mottainai (“don’t waste”). Through rededication to these values, she believes, we might finally bring about healing for ourselves and the earth.
