Book Headcount

Download or read book Headcount written by Ashish Bose and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acronym 'BIMARU states' was widely used in the mid-1980s to refer to the population issues of India's four largest states-Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Ashish Bose, the man who coined this much-discussed term, is the pioneer of demographic studies in the country. In Headcount, the demographer sets the record straight on BIMARU, and in the process, presents his unique view of modern India. In his inimitable engaging style, Bose, who was born in 1930, paints a vivid portrait of a life well-lived-from his childhood in Kolhapur, then a princely state, to his encounters with three generations of the Nehru-Gandhi family and his recollections of the darkest days of Indian democracy: the Emergency. Filled with little known facts and insights into the people and events that have shaped independent India, this is a deeply compassionate and readable memoir by one of the most important social scientists of modern India.

Book excerpt: "Reducing poverty is the central development challenge in Bangladesh. This poverty assessment addresses several basic "counting the poor" questions: Who are the poor? How numerous are they? Where do they live? What are the characteristics of poor households? How should we measure poverty? Has poverty declined? Has inequality increased? In answering these questions this poverty assessment constructs a poverty profile for Bangladesh."Although poverty has declined in Bangladesh in the 1990s, the remaining challenges are enormous. This report is part of a long-term process of capacity building and mainstreaming of poverty analysis in Bangladesh. Its findings suggest five pillars of a possible poverty reduction strategy: • Accelerating economic growth • Promoting education for the poor • Investing in poor areas • Improved targeting of public expenditures and safety nets • Forming further partnerships with NGOs Discussions with stakeholders, NGOs, the government, poverty researchers, and other donors in Bangladesh arising from this report will help to build support for an action plan and more detailed policy and institutional changes for faster poverty reduction.

Book Strategic Thinking Illustrated

Download or read book Strategic Thinking Illustrated written by Dennis Sherwood and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the behaviour of systems. Systems are important, for we interact with them all the time, and many of the actions we take are influenced by a system – for example, the system of performance measures in an organisation influences, often very strongly, how individuals within that organisation behave. Furthermore, sometimes we are involved in the design of systems, as is any manager contributing to the definition of what those performance measures might be. That manager will want to ensure that all the proposed performance measures will drive the ‘right’ behaviours rather than (inadvertently) encouraging dysfunctional ‘game playing’, and so anticipating how the performance measurement system will work in practice is a vital part of a wise design process. Some of the systems with which we interact are local, such as your organisation’s performance measurement system. Some systems, however, are distant, but nonetheless very real, such as the healthcare system, the education system, the legal system and the climate system. Systems, therefore, exist on all scales, from the local to the global. And all systems are complex, some hugely so. That’s why understanding how systems behave can be very helpful. Systems are complex for two main reasons. First, the manner in which they behave over time can be very hard to anticipate – and anticipating the future sensibly is of course a key objective of management. Second, the ‘entities’ within a system can be connected together in very complex ways, so that an intervention ‘here’ can result in an effect ‘there’, perhaps a long time afterward. Sometimes this can be surprising, and so we talk of ‘unintended consequences’ – but this is of course a euphemism for ‘because I didn’t understand how this system behaves, I had not anticipated that’. Systems thinking, the subject matter of this book, is the disciplined study of systems, and causal loop diagrams – the ‘pictures’ of this ‘picture book’ – are a very insightful way to represent the connectedness of the entities from which any system is composed, so taming that system’s complexity.

Book excerpt: This project involves a comprehensive analysis of direct and indirect costs of transacting business via third parties versus Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) field offices, including long term and short term costs. The analysis examines the third party process in detail and compares it with the same process within MVD operations to determine the cost to MVD of providing a transaction through a third party versus the cost to provide the same transaction in an MVD office. Using lessons learned from a review of prior models, review of relevant literature, and interviews with key personnel, a Third Party Transaction Cost model was constructed, populated with relevant data, and analyzed. Utilizing the model and cost and transaction data for the most recent fiscal year data available (July 1, 2001 - June 30, 2002), a summary table shows the costs per transaction.
