Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the Bible. When we read Scripture we often imagine that the world inhabited by the Bible's characters was much the same as our own. We would be wrong. The biblical world is an ancient world with a flat earth that stands at the center of the cosmos, and with a vast ocean in the sky, chaos dragons, mystical mountains, demonic deserts, an underground zone for the dead, stars that are sentient beings, and, if you travel upwards and through the doors in the solid dome of the sky, God's heaven--the heart of the universe. This book takes readers on a guided tour of the biblical cosmos with the goal of opening up the Bible in its ancient world. It then goes further and seeks to show how this very ancient biblical way of seeing the world is still revelatory and can speak God's word afresh into our own modern worlds.

Book Jesus and the Coming Glory

Download or read book Jesus and the Coming Glory written by Joel Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus and the Coming Glory: Or Notes on Scripture That the author of a work which, either as to its substance or its method, is seriously influenced by considerations which are not discussed in the work itself, should, by preliminary explanations, or even by a large introduction, set forth those controlling considerations, is extremely natural, may often be indispensable, and was formerly very general. But it is not possible for one human being so to possess himself of the whole thought of another, as to perform this service for him, even when it is needed, with complete success. Moreover, it is only in works of a peculiar kind - and this work of Judge Jones can hardly be said to be of that kind - that such attempts can be important, even when they are successful. It is because the duties of friendship are sacred - sacred towards the dead - sacred towards those who survive - far more than because there is any need of it, that any words of mine precede these Notes on Scripture. Many years ago, and for a number of successive years, it was my fortune to be immediately connected, as owner, publisher, and editor, with the periodical press. Judge Jones was one of the largest and most valued contributors to those pages for which I was, in so many ways, responsible. Expositions of Scripture, and expositions, critical and historical, of the Papacy, were his chief themes. This literary connection ripened into a warm and lasting friendship; and in this manner were those abounding opportunities afforded, to appreciate justly his gifts, his attainments, and his virtues, and to speak with the greatest confidence of his remarkable fitness as an expositor of the word of God. Book Lange s Commentary of the Holy Scriptures

Download or read book Lange s Commentary of the Holy Scriptures written by Johann Peter Lange and published by Christian Classics Reproductions. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 1384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he original 63 volumes set are now reduced to 9 volumes. We have completed volumes 1, 6-9 which are the New Testament. Lord willing during 2023-2024, we will try to complete volumes 2-5 which are the Old Testament. This volume was published between 1867-1874 In contrast to the extreme skeptical-critical mode which came to characterize much of German scholarship in the 19th century, Lange represented a more traditional-conservative (and Evangelical) approach, shared in common with men such as E. W. Hengstenberg. He was also a (Reformed) minister, and the Commentaries reflect this combination of conservative criticism, Evangelical theology, and homiletics, in a way that is unique. For each passage that is covered, a consistent approach is adopted throughout. After giving the text in translation, along with textual notes, (as footnotes), three different kinds of commentary are presented: · EXEGETICAL AND CRITICAL · DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL · HOMILETICAL AND PRACTICAL This gives you three times the value! For each verse you select, a drop-down box will appear allowing you to choose from each of these areas or kinds of commentary. For detailed analysis, go to the exegetical-critical notes; for sermon ideas and pastoral insights, select the Homiletical notes.

Book Hell s Destruction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Ella Laufer
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-22

Download or read book Hell s Destruction written by Catherine Ella Laufer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The credal affirmation, 'he descended to the dead', has attracted a plethora of views over the centuries and many Christians today struggle to explain the meaning of these words. This book explores various interpretations of the doctrine of Christ's descent to the dead, both within particular historical contexts and within contemporary theology. Laufer argues that the descensus clause, Christ's descent, is integral to Christian faith, specifically to the doctrine of the incarnation. If we are to affirm that, in Christ, God became truly human then that affirmation must include his sharing in the state of being dead that is the ultimate consequence of being human. Laufer concludes that, since the Son has experienced genuine human death and the separation from God which is the essence of hell, there is no longer any human condition from which God is absent, either in this life or in eternity. Christ's descent means that he is truly 'hell's destruction'. Drawing on a treasure trove of writings from the western theological tradition, including Luther, Calvin, Maurice, Balthasar, Moltmann and others, and attending to historical, theological, exegetical, philosophical and pastoral issues, this book explores an often-ignored doctrine which lies at the core of Christian life, death and faith.
