Book Risk and Safety Analysis of Nuclear Systems

Download or read book Risk and Safety Analysis of Nuclear Systems written by John C. Lee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book has been developed in conjunction with NERS 462, a course offered every year to seniors and graduate students in the University of Michigan NERS program. The first half of the book covers the principles of risk analysis, the techniques used to develop and update a reliability data base, the reliability of multi-component systems, Markov methods used to analyze the unavailability of systems with repairs, fault trees and event trees used in probabilistic risk assessments (PRAs), and failure modes of systems. All of this material is general enough that it could be used in non-nuclear applications, although there is an emphasis placed on the analysis of nuclear systems. The second half of the book covers the safety analysis of nuclear energy systems, an analysis of major accidents and incidents that occurred in commercial nuclear plants, applications of PRA techniques to the safety analysis of nuclear power plants (focusing on a major PRA study for five nuclear power plants), practical PRA examples, and emerging techniques in the structure of dynamic event trees and fault trees that can provide a more realistic representation of complex sequences of events. The book concludes with a discussion on passive safety features of advanced nuclear energy systems under development and approaches taken for risk-informed regulations for nuclear plants.

Book Nuclear Power Safety

Download or read book Nuclear Power Safety written by James H. Rust and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise and current treatment of the subject of nuclear power safety, this work addresses itself to such issues of public concern as: radioactivity in routine effluents and its effect on human health and the environment, serious reactor accidents and their consequences, transportation accidents involving radioactive waste, the disposal of radioactive waste, particularly high-level wastes, and the possible theft of special nuclear materials and their fabrication into a weapon by terrorists. The implementation of the defense-in-depth concept of nuclear power safety is also discussed. Of interest to all undergraduate and graduate students of nuclear engineering, this work assumes a basic understanding of scientific and engineering principles and some familiarity with nuclear power reactors

Book excerpt: This guide discusses the hazardous phenomena associated with external man-induced events, such as aircraft crashes, explosions, release of hazardous fluids using screening distances and probabilities. Their potential effects on the nuclear power plant and methods used to develop adequate design bases for the plant to prevent such effects are also included.

Book Power Production

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. H. Fremlin
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Power Production written by J. H. Fremlin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power Production: What Are the Risks? includes completely new chapters to take into account the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, the disaster at Piper Alpha, and the much debated problems of acid rain and the greenhouse effect. The book evaluates the risks involved in using coal and oil-fired generation of nuclear and hydro power. The author contends that in our modern industrial society the risks of power production are less than the consequences of having insufficient supplies of power. He uses technical data from many fields of research to estimate the risks to the public from both renewable and nonrenewable sources.

Book Science and Technology to Counter Terrorism

Download or read book Science and Technology to Counter Terrorism written by International Strategic and Security Studies Programme of the National Institute of Advanced Studies and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-03-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the papers and summarizes the discussions of a workshop held in Goa, India, in January 2004, organized by the Indian National Institute of Advanced Science (NIAS) and the U.S. Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC). During the workshop, Indian and U.S. experts examined the terrorist threat faced in both countries and elsewhere in the world, and explored opportunities for the U.S. and India to work together. Bringing together scientists and experts with common scientific and technical backgrounds from different cultures provided a unique opportunity to explore possible means of preventing or mitigating future terrorist attacks.
