Book excerpt: Childhood, adolescence-they're supposed to be the easy years, a time for fun and self-discovery. But some kids aren't that fortunate. They're too busy struggling to keep it together, doing whatever it takes to make it through the day. And there aren't many teens in Orange County, California, who get that more than Brad, Kylie, and Travis.Brad's always been a loner with very few friends, but his life was pretty much average right up until his parents' divorce shattered his world. Coping with his older brother Johnny's drug addiction and getting teased for being overweight doesn't help either. The loneliness, depression, and stress trigger an eating disorder, and he becomes consumed with the need to burn off the fat that he blames for isolating him from his peers.Kylie is an orphan-or at least she feels like she is. Her father died when she was young, and her mother has been so spaced out on meds in the years since that Kylie basically takes care of herself. And when her boyfriend Johnny starts doing drugs with Travis to escape his troubles, she decides it's time to follow in her mother's footsteps.Ever since Travis's mom was admitted to the psych ward, he's been stuck living with his aunt. Smoking weed with his best friend Johnny used to be enough of a relief, but when his mom finally comes home, getting stoned suddenly just won't cut it. The quest for a more potent escape leads him to bond with his drug dealer, and Travis quickly realizes this new path will end with him either in jail or a body bag.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When her mother and her stepfather did not come home for dinner, Sandy had a sense of foreboding. But her mother had been late before, so Sandy hid her fears from her two younger sisters. Only later, getting up in the middle of the night and finding that her mother's clothes were gone, did she admit the horrible truth–they had been abandoned. Readers will be caught up in thirteen-year-old Sandy's attempt to shield her sisters from knowledge of the desertion and to keep them all together on their run-down, debt-ridden farm. She deceives the neighbors by inventing a sick aunt whom their mother is supposed to be visiting, earns small sums by doing odd jobs, and faces crises, big and small, with occasional help from her only friend, Joe. Her hard test of self-reliance comes at a time in her life when she is undergoing changes she longs to explore and think about–a time, too, when the mystery and thrill of first love unexpectedly come to her. Sandy's story is also one of life on an American farm hovering on the brink of poverty. "Under the Haystack" is a novel rich in family warmth, humor and sadness. Sandy, courageous and believable as she stand in uncertainty on the threshold of womanhood while trying to hold her family together, is a girl with whom readers can readily identify.
Download or read book Responsive Design Workflow written by Stephen Hay and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 2013 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our industry, everything changes quickly, usually for the better. We have more and better tools for creating websites and applications that work across multiple platforms. Oddly enough, design workflow hasn't changed much, and what has changed is often for worse. Old-school workflow is simply not effective on our multiplatform web. Fixed-width Photoshop comps and overproduced wireframes are no longer the way to design for today's multi-platform web. This book provides a practical approach for "designing in the browser." It shows how to better manage client expectations and development requirements, and offers a method of design documentation.

Download or read book In the Vanguard written by Diana Greenwold and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Vanguard: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, 1950–1969 traces the first two decades of the Haystack Mountain School of Craft’s history and its pivotal impact on the world of art and craft practice in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. The first scholarly investigation of this internationally renowned school, the exhibition, and the accompanying catalogue will feature work made at Haystack or influenced by time spent there by some of the most highly recognized names in the fields of fiber, glass, ceramics, jewelry, and graphic arts to demonstrate the school’s significant role in debates about art, craft, industry, and pedagogy in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Haystack’s model of brief summer sessions and changing instructors offered new ways of thinking about the status of craft as art and the nature of accessible design in the context of communally based, process-oriented learning. Anni Albers, Toshiko Takaezu, Jack Lenor Larsen, Kay Sekimachi, Arline Fisch, Robert Arneson, Harvey Littleton, Wolf Kahn, and Dale Chihuly are just a few of the artists who taught at the school between 1950 and 1969 and who helped define Haystack’s radically open-ended approach towards art and craft. With approximately eighty objects assembled from public and private collections and archives, many rarely or never before exhibited in a museum, In the Vanguard will establish the substantial legacy of this remote community of makers in the art and education world at large. Archival material installed throughout the exhibition will include original correspondence, photographs, brochures, architectural models, posters, and early ephemera. Published in association with the Portland Museum of Art. Exhibition dates: Portland Museum of Art, Maine: May 24–September 8, 2019 Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan: November 15, 2019–March 8, 2020

Download or read book Needles in haystacks written by Madga Nico and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Young) lives are cross-sectoral by nature, and youth policy also needs to be so. Cross-sectorality is a well-known aspect of youth policy, but the importance of this aspect does not translate into a common understanding of what cross-sectoral youth policy means and of the ways it can be developed. This book is a collection of articles detailing concrete experiences of cross-sectoral youth policy implementation. It starts with the idea that the efficacy and the sustainability of cross-sectoral youth policy depends on the degree and nature of interaction between various youth policy subdomains and levels, ranging from legal frameworks to interinstitutional or interpersonal relations, and from pan-European to local level. By making these examples available, this book will hopefully support the development of a common understanding of what cross-sectoral youth policy means in different countries and settings. The authors themselves reflect the diversity of the people involved in youth policy (policy makers, youth researchers, youth workers and workers in the field of youth) and this work represents their intention to provide these professionals – as well as others interested in the youth field – with the knowledge necessary to implement, in a real-life scenario, cross-sectoral youth policy.
Download or read book The Perfect Learners Dictionary written by Thomas Herbst and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume undertakes a detailed analysis of the latest generation of learners' dictionaries of English. It assembles the papers delivered at the eponymous symposium held at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in April 1997. There are a number of reasons why these dictionaries are of special lexicographic interest: 1. the type of learners' dictionary associated notably with the name of Hornby can look back on a long tradition in British lexicography; 2. competition between various publishers since the late 70s has given crucial impetus to the development of these dictionaries; 3. these new dictionaries are decisively marked by the evaluation of large-scale computer corpora. Central to the volume is the in-depth comparison of four dictionaries published in 1995: OALD5, LDOCE3, COBUILD2, CIDE. The aim is to exemplify specific differences of approach in the four dictionaries from a wide range of viewpoints (definitions, information on valency and collocations, policy on usage examples, political correctness, etc.). A number of articles also enlarge on the history of learners' dictionaries of English, the significance of corpus linguistics for lexicography, and perspectives for the future, notably in connection with the electronic media.
