Download or read book Hawthorne on Painting written by Charles W. Hawthorne and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1960-06-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look around and select a subject that you can see painted. That will paint itself. Do the obvious thing before you do the superhuman thing. It may have been accidental, but you knew enough to let this alone. The good painter is always making use of accidents. Never try to repeat a success. Swing a bigger brush — you don’t know what fun you are missing. For 31 years, Charles Hawthorne spoke in this manner to students of his famous Cape Cod School of Art. The essence of that instruction has been collected from students’ notes and captured in this book, retaining the personal feeling and the sense of on-the-spot inspiration of the original classroom. Even though Hawthorne is addressing himself to specific problems in specific paintings, his comments are so revealing that they will be found applicable a hundred times to your own work. The book is divided into sections on the outdoor model, still life, landscape, the indoor model, and watercolor. Each section begins with a concise essay and continues with comments on basic elements: general character, color, form, seeing, posture, etc. It is in the matter of color that students will especially feel themselves in the presence of a master guide and critic. Hawthorne’s ability to see color and, more important, to make the student see color, is a lesson that will aid student painters and anyone else interested in any phase of art. Although it does not pretend to be a comprehensive or closely ordered course, this book does have much to offer. It also represents the artistic insight of one of the finest painter-teachers of the twentieth century. "An excellent introduction for laymen and students alike." — Time "To read these notes and comments … is in itself an education. One cannot help but gain great help." — School Arts

  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Charles Webster Hawthorne written by Richard Mühlberger and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first life comprehensive book on the life and work of the most outstanding American realists of the early 20th century. It celebrates Charles Webster Hawthorne's achievements as an artist, an unacknowledged master of American realism, whose thoroughly modern idiom blends the Impressionist sensibility with the Ashcan School aesthetic. Hawthorne is best known for his masterful use of colors, and the way they capture the human essence and reveal stunning beauty in the commonplace. Influenced by the Old Masters -- especially Titian and Frans Hals -- Hawthorne admired the rich tonality of color, the monumentality and beauty of representation, and the nobility of subjects depicted, and imported them into his paintings of ordinary people for whom he felt sympathy or admiration: Portuguese fishermen, the selectmen and selectwomen of Provincetown, the fishmonger, the captain's wife, mothers and children.

Book On Divers Arts

  • Author : Theophilus
  • Publisher : Courier Corporation
  • Release : 2012-04-30
  • ISBN : 0486145417
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book On Divers Arts written by Theophilus and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have made it my concern to hunt out this technique for your study as I learned it by looking and listening." On Divers Arts, c. 1122, is the oldest extant manual on artistic crafts to be written by a practicing artist. Before Theophilus, manuscripts on the arts came from scholars and philosophers standing outside the actual profession. On Divers Arts describes actual 12th-century techniques in painting, glass, and metalwork, which the Benedictine author wished to pass on to those gifted by God with a talent for making beautiful things. Theophilus teaches, with rigorous attention to fact but also with great reverence the making of pigments for fresco painting, the manufacture of glue, the technique of gold leaf on parchment (the first recorded European reference to true paper), how to blow glass and design stained glass windows, how to fashion gold and silver chalices, and how to make a pipe organ and church bells. Precise instruction on enameling, chasing, repoussé, niello, and beaded wire work prove Theophilus's first-hand knowledge of his craft. While 90 percent of Theophilus's writing is sound technical knowledge, medieval folk lore occasionally spices his text: "Tools are also made harder by hardening them in the urine of a small red-headed boy than by doing so in plain water." But the magnificent fact of On Divers Art remains its status as the first technical treatise on painting, glass, and metalwork, for which actual specimens still survive. The editors have taken care to ensure both philological and technological accuracy for this authoritative edition of a medieval classic, a manual of great importance to craftsmen, historians of art and science, and all who delight in the making of the beautiful.

Book excerpt: "Around the turn of the century, American art was at a low ebb. Painting was in a hopeless state of nothingness. Sentimental landscapes were produced by the hundreds with little resemblance to the American scene. The established art world showed little of the vitality that marked the rambunctious growth of a nation in the throes of establishing a great free enterprise social order. In Philadelphia and later, New York, artistic rebellion grew up around a group of talented artist-reporters who painted the world as they saw it, in all its beauty and grim reality. The Realist or Ashcan School of Art was born. At first, the Realist painters were despised and rejected because of their choice of subjects -- burlesque houses, Bowery bars, bedrooms, ragged urchins and dingy street scenes. But the biting truth of the Realists' pictorial observations could not be denied. The artists' determination to freely exhibit their art became a virtual battle for survival. This is the true story of the men in the forefront of the struggle to establish the first truly American tendency in art"--Front flap.
