Book Hawaii Warbird Survivors 2002

Download or read book Hawaii Warbird Survivors 2002 written by Harold A. Skaarup and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in the state of Hawaii. The majority of the “Hawaii Warbird Survivors” are on display outdoors as gate guardians at Hickam, Wheeler and Kaneohe. A number of volunteer organizations and museum staffs in Hawaii have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of American combat veteran aircraft, displayed here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites or are restored, traded or brought back from private owners, they too will be added to the record. The handbook lists the aircraft on display in Hawaii alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently preserved within the state and a bit of their history in the US military.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although still virtually unknown in the West, Ôoka Shôhei (1909-1988) is one of Japan's most important and influential writers and social critics. The Burdens of Survival is both a seminal English-language study of this preeminent literary figure and one of the first scholarly works to thoroughly examine the war literature of a major Japanese veteran-author. Drawing on Robert Jay Lifton's work on traumatic experience and survivor psychology, the book tells the illuminating story of Ôoka's arduous journey that began with guilt-ridden survival as a prisoner of war in the Philippines and culminated some twenty-five years later in the fruitful completion of survivor mission. David C. Stahl examines Ôoka's battlefield memoirs, including the established war classic Fires on the Plain (1952), in terms of extreme experience, survivor guilt, bearing witness, and the "inability to mourn." Writing enabled Ôoka to give cathartic expression to his haunting battlefield experience and made it possible for him to move from blame-shifting to empathy and mourning. The lengthy, exhaustively researched historical work The Battle for Leyte Island (1967-1969) faithfully details the personal and collective experience of battle, depravation, and loss, and clarifies who and what was ultimately responsible for defeat. Toward the end of this work and Return to Mindoro Island (1969), Ooka draws attention to the outstanding obligations owed by his countrymen to the war dead and suggests how they can be fulfilled by public confrontation, learning the lessons of defeat, and using them to rectify lingering social and political evils.

Book excerpt: The Hawaiian word “Aloha” evokes an image of white, sandy beaches and cool tropical breezes, but the significance of the word goes beyond a mere greeting and farewell. Aloha encapsulates all of the love, peace, compassion, and affection one feels when connected to the vibrational energy of the islands. The word is a definition of the force that holds together our very existence. Author and certified Law of Attraction coach, Kelly Weaver shares candid stories of her own struggles and successes through her journey of manifestation and personal growth as she learned to embrace aloha in her life. With keen insight into the universal law that “like attracts like,” she uses a mnemonic device and “Inspired Assignments” in each chapter, to guide readers through her process of self-reflection and discovery that your focus of attention and energy attracts consequences, both positive and negative. This book practically demonstrates how deliberate intention can lead you to experiencing the transformative power of manifesting, and will teach you how to live your own aloha.

Book excerpt: It begins deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, where a nuclear bomb strikes at the fiery hot heart of the earth. Churning, spewing boiling lava, a volcano rises with unnatural speed from the ocean floor -- the source of a new mineral that promises clean, limitless nuclear power. It continues in hot spots around the globe: Hawaii, where a secessionist movement is about to turn violent and the American army may be asked to fire on U.S. citizens; Washington, D.C., where the subway system becomes the site of a running gun battle; the Far East, where disrupted diplomatic negotiations jeopardize world peace; a rogue Russian submarine, circling the infant volcano. Caught in the middle is Philip Mercer, a geologist and a one-time commando with shady contacts in all the right (or is it wrong?) places. When Mercer learns that the daughter of an old friend is being kept under armed guard in a local hospital, he vows to rescue her, not knowing that this is the first step in unraveling the fantastic secrets of Vulcan's Forge.
