Book We Have Overcome

Download or read book We Have Overcome written by Jason D. Hill and published by Bombardier Books. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than fifty years since the Civil Rights Act enshrined equality under the law for all Americans. Since that time, America has enjoyed an era of unprecedented prosperity, domestic and international peace, and technological advancement. It’s almost as if removing the shackles of enforced racial discrimination has liberated Americans of all races and ethnicities to become their better selves, and to work toward common goals in ways that our ancestors would have envied. But the dominant narrative, repeated in the media and from the angry mouths of politicians and activists, is the exact opposite of the reality. They paint a portrait of an America rife with racial and ethnic division, where minorities are mired in a poverty worse than slavery, and white people stand at the top of an unfairly stacked pyramid of privilege. Jason D. Hill corrects the narrative in this powerfully eloquent book. Dr. Hill came to this country at the age of twenty from Jamaica and, rather than being faced with intractable racial bigotry, Hill found a land of bountiful opportunity—a place where he could get a college education, earn a doctorate in philosophy, and eventually become a tenured professor at a top university, an internationally recognized scholar, and the author of several respected books in his field. Throughout his experiences, it wasn’t a racist establishment that sought to keep him down. Instead, Hill recounts, he faced constant naysaying from so-called liberals of all races. His academic colleagues did not celebrate the success of a black immigrant but chose to denigrate them because this particular black immigrant did not embrace their ideology of victimization. Part memoir, part exhortation to his fellow Americans, and, above all, a paean to the American Dream and the magnificent country that makes it possible, We Have Overcome is the most important and provocative book about race relations to be published in this century.

Book excerpt: A celebration of the gospel anthem and Civil Rights protest song "We Shall Overcome," masterfully brought to life by Caldecott Honor recipient and a nine-time Coretta Scott King Award winner Bryan Collier. Now, these inspirational, empowering, legendary lyrics are brought to life with the stirring, evocative, and breathtaking illustrations from multi-award-winning talent Bryan Collier. Powerfully imagined for the present moment, Collier's illustrations meld the most emblematic moments of the twentieth-century Civil Rights movement with the present day, depicting the movements, protests, and demonstrations -- big and small -- as the fight for justice continues. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Download or read book How to Overcome Death written by Glen C. Cutlip and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overcoming of death is a serious undertaking because death is a part of the nature one one's being; and therefore, not what it appears to be. When Death is reconciled with life, it becomes a means of interdimensional travel. We realize that it wasnt there in the first place. Therefore, the overcoming of death is to take place within one's present consciousness, for death is the counterpart of life in the first place. Therefore, the resurrection unto life is from the death that is hidden in life. It is the dead that appear to be living that are resurrected unto life. Death is something that is a part of ones present consciousness, not something off somewhere in the so-called afterlife The resurrection of the dead is unto conscious life or immortality, or back into the realm of unconscious death; for life and death occupy the same space. It is a matter of seeing death as it is, not just as it appears to be. In that death is not what it appears to be, the overcoming of death is not what it appears to be. Therefore, it is a real possibility. It can be realized within ones lifetime. The Overcoming of Death is the means of bringing the realization of conscious immortality to the awareness of ones present consciousness in this lifetime. It reveals why it is that losing life is finding it, and how it is that it is the dead that are living that hear the voice of the Son of God and are resurrected from the dead.

Book We Shall Overcome

Download or read book We Shall Overcome written by Isaias Gamboa and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EVERYTHING you think you know about the song, "We Shall Overcome..".is WRONG. This is the Shocking, Untold Story of the iconic freedom-song, We Shall Overcome and its TRUE author, Louise Shropshire - a sharecropper's daughter and self-proclaimed "nobody," who through love and dedication to God, Gospel-music and the African-American Church, overcomes racism and poverty to find herself in the inner-circle of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey and the Civil Rights Movement. Along her way, Shropshire composes and copyrights a popular Gospel-hymn, which is secularized and hijacked by Pete Seeger and his powerful associates known to insiders as the "Folk Mafia." The sacred song is then unlawfully copyrighted by Seeger and his associates then peddled for untold millions all over the globe by Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and countless others. Featuring more than 160 extraordinary photographs, this well sourced and cited compendium not only describes the disturbing details surrounding the misappropriation of Louise Shropshire's sacred hymn, but also explores the historical attitudes of Black-exploitation, subjugation and racism in America by non culture-bearers. -Attitudes that enabled such an unthinkable act to occur in the first place, and remain unchallenged for half a century. Although the US Library of Congress has called We Shall Overcome; "The Most Powerful Song of the 20th Century..".a song that raked in untold millions in royalties for its hijackers, Louise Shropshire would die penniless and unrecognized.
