Der erste Vortrag behandelt die seelische Begrundung der Religion. Hier gilt es, fur die Begrundung der Religion einen Weg zu finden zwischen der alteren Art, die vom Weltbilde zur Religion gelangen zu konnen glaubte, und der neueren, die von der menschlichen Seele ausgeht, dabei aber leicht ins Unsichere und Gestaltlose gerat. Demgegenuber wird hier ein Verfahren entwickelt, das die lnnerlichkeit zur Grundlage nimmt, aber zugleich einen Weltcharakter wahrt; eine Religion des Geisteslebens scheidet sich damit deutlich von einer des blossen Menschen. Die zweite Abhandlung hat zum Vorwurf "Religion und Geschichte." Fur die heutige Lage der Religion ist kaum etwas so bezeichnend als das stete zuruckgehen auf die Geschichte, bei allem Gewinn sind hier grosse Gefahren nicht zu verkennen; es galt, sie zu erwagen und dabei namentlich zu prufen, ob es moglich ist, einen erdruckenden und erschlaffenden Historismus zu uberwinden und zugleich eine Bedeutung der Geschichte gegenuber einem geschichtsfeindlichen Radikalismus festzuhalten.
