But many restless souls from the city’s past refuse to fade quietly into history. Join author John Brian as he records the voices and visions that haunt Pocatello today. • Pages : 561 pages

Download or read book The Gates of Hell written by David Henderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is mostly a collection of true stories about demonic beings frightening, torturing, and creating chaos among humans. The first reason I authored this book was because I simply enjoy this topic. Yes, I am a bit odd. I find topics that are strange, mysterious, and diabolical to be interesting. The second reason is because we are in a spiritual battle, and I find many Christians that I know seem to be almost oblivious to this fact. My hope in this book is to make you more aware of the battle going on around us and that we can and should be ready to defend and battle Satan and his demonic army. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” Ephesians 6:12.

Book The Politics of Haunting and Memory in International Relations

Download or read book The Politics of Haunting and Memory in International Relations written by Jessica Auchter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Relations has traditionally focused on conflict and war, but the effects of violence including dead bodies and memorialization practices have largely been considered beyond the purview of the field. Drawing on Jacques Derrida’s notion of hauntology to consider the politics of life and death, Auchter traces the story of how life and death and a clear division between the two is summoned in the project of statecraft. She argues that by letting ourselves be haunted, or looking for ghosts, it is possible to trace how statecraft relies on the construction of such a dichotomy. Three empirical cases offer fertile ground for complicating the picture often painted of memorialization: Rwandan genocide memorials, the underexplored case of undocumented immigrants who die crossing the US-Mexico border, and the body/ruins nexus in 9/11 memorialization. Focusing on the role of dead bodies and the construction of particular spaces as the appropriate sites for memory to be situated, it offers an alternative take on the new materialisms movement in international relations by asking after the questions that arise from an ethnographic approach to the subject: viewing things from the perspective of dead bodies, who occupy the shadowy world of post-conflict international politics. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of critical international relations, security studies, statecraft and memory studies.

Book excerpt: A fusion of travel literature and cultural criticism investigating the dark history of the US and exploring how past horrors – from witch trials to slavery and genocide – continue to haunt the national consciousness. Haunted States is a unique guidebook that explores the dark, often horrifying, history of the US. Based on the author’s journey across the United States in summer 2022, it explores locations connected to Gothic fiction and film, tracking the relationship between the American landscapes and the various forms of fictional horror the nation has produced over the centuries. Part cultural history and part travelogue, Haunted States traces how the American Gothic draws inspiration from the natural and built environments, with the astounding geographical variation of the landscape influencing the distinctive forms of horror produced across its many diverse regions. The book also investigates how the horrors of the American Gothic have their roots in the nation’s dark history of colonialism, slavery, violence and oppression – past sins that continue to haunt the national consciousness to this day. Taking horror (in literature, film and the visual arts) as its starting point, Haunted States investigates the landscapes, places and cultures that produced it. Incorporating first-person travel narrative, historical context and supplementary interviews, Haunted States journeys across the USA to learn about its eclectic, regional forms of horror.
