But when the lights go out, suddenly his new big rabbit underwear glows in the dark. A ghoulish, greenish glow. If Jasper didn’t know any better he’d say his undies were a little, well, creepy. Book excerpt: The author of The War Between the Tates and the Pulitzer prize-winning Foreign Affairs now brings her irresistible wit to the ghost story. In nine spooky tales, Alison Lurie writes of women haunted by ghosts both literal and metaphorical: A woman about to marry Mr. Right is visited by the spirit of his first wife; a dead fiancé haunts a foreign service officer every time she has an intimate moment with another man; the ghost of a girl in a Halloween costume disconcerts the perfect housewife. A secretary on a diet begins to see obese people everywhere she looks; a self-conscious poet is shadowed by her intrusive doppelganger; and a capricious, malevolent spirit seems to have inhabited an acquisitive matron’s prized piece of furniture. Delightfully strange and beautifully told, these nine tales show Alison Lurie at her luminous best.

Book A Year On Earth With Mr Hell

Download or read book A Year On Earth With Mr Hell written by Young Kim and published by Fashionbeast Editions. This book was released on 2024-02-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A controversial but highly acclaimed memoir by writer Young Kim, A Year on Earth with Mr. Hell, traces her intense relationship with pioneering punk rocker Richard Hell. An erotic account that retains sensitivity and taste, Kim's book has been celebrated by luminaries including Bret Easton Ellis, Nick Hornby and Edmund White and has received plaudits in GQ and The Times. Noted journalist Matthew D'Ancona likened the text to the work of Nin and Bataille. Set in a Warholian swirl in the worlds of art, music, and fashion, spanning continents, the narrative is as much about Kim’s processing her grief for Malcolm McLaren (most famous for his role as the conceptualizer, art director, and manager of the Sex Pistols, as well as designing the punk style with his then-partner Vivienne Westwood), her romantic and business partner for the last 12 years of his life until his untimely death in 2010. Though written as it happened like a diary, in its cinematic sweep, it reads like a novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of lingerie is often seen as a mystery, even by professionals working in other sectors of the fashion industry. This book explains the processes at work and the many unexpected influences that inform the choice of color, silhouettes, and decoration. The book documents the rise of the deluxe lingerie brand. This interest in luxury labels has led many young designers to chose lingerie as a creative outlet – conscious of fashion, but also with a clear view of their own 'lingerie world'. The book features the work of 30 lingerie designers from around the world, bringing out the individuality of each designer and providing a compelling insight into their working methods. Beautifully illustrated throughout, it presents inspirational images from the designers' collections alongside their sketches and mood boards. In this book, Pamela Powell takes a very practical approach, showing how to design and construct lingerie, sleepwear, and foundation garments. Step-by-step illustrations demonstrate the basic slopers and show how to manipulate them into different styles. Advice is given about how to work with the specialty fabrics used in the industry including woven, knit, power stretch, and bias-cut fabrics. Specially commissioned photographs and diagrams are used to showcase construction techniques specific to lingerie including boning, elastic, and lace insertion, and how and where to use the myriad of closures available. A final chapter on embellishment shows how to add unique and personal touches to garments and apply that luxurious finish.

Book Ghosts of Cielo Drive

Download or read book Ghosts of Cielo Drive written by David Oman and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote the book from my own unique perspective regarding the spirits or ghosts amongst us. One not commonly seen or shown on TV and rarely discussed, however, I live in what one paranormal expert declared, 'the Mount Everest of Haunted Houses' and 'The Disneyland for the Dead' and have now for over 17 years with no problems or issues. While just down the drive from my house one of the most gruesome and notorious murders of our time was committed on August 8th, 1969 when Charles Manson's 'Family' descended on Roman Polanski's residence on Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills and brutally murdered 5 people including Polanski's wife pregnant Sharon Tate. Now my home is visited by far more than those who were killed down from my home, the house seems to be a 'Ghost Flophouse' according to Mary Anne Winkowski, the real life Ghost Whisperer' she is convinced that it truly is a one of a kind location and my attitude towards my unseen house guests is also unheard of. You see I don't and am not afraid of the spirits that visit and hang out here. My thoughts are that we all will pass from this earth and those who have passed before us returning to visit us isn't something to be scared about, quite to the contrary I believe it is unique to have such an experience and that it's a positive to be one of the few who has had an encounter with a spirit. My motto is "You have more to Fear from the Living than you do the Dead'.

Book Colaba

Book excerpt: Description Colaba, the southernmost tip of Mumbai-a bustling locality with the Gateway of India, the famous Taj Mahal Hotel, and Colaba Causeway, a shopper's paradise-is the city's most iconic neighbourhood. But barely 200 years ago, it was a rocky, jackal-infested island, separated from the rest of the great metropolis by a temperamental creek. In this compelling biography, Shabnam Minwalla, journalist, author and long-time resident of the area, tells the tale of the unexpected forces that reshaped land and sea; and allowed this remote corner of Bombay-Mumbai to evolve into one of its liveliest, quirkiest neighbourhoods. Trying to figure out the exact area limits, she unravels accounts of colonial rivalries and dowry negotiations, and of shrewd industrialists who transformed the doomed island into the centre of trade during the cotton boom of the 1860s. She navigates the sometimes charming, sometimes seedy streets to track the area's evolution from a retreat for British soldiers and sailors to a coveted residential area for the English and Indians alike. She digs into her childhood memories to introduce us to the eccentric Parsis of Cusrow Baug, the warm yet persistent shopkeepers and hawkers of the Causeway, the industrious Sindhis who pioneered co-operative housing societies, the colourful musicians, theatre artists and writers who frequented her corner of Colaba, and the Arabs who come there every year to witness the city's monsoons. And in a moving section, she records how the neighbourhood rose like a phoenix from the ashes after the 26/11 terrorist attack. Combining a remarkable flair for storytelling with sound journalistic groundwork, and drawing upon three generations of family memory, Shabnam paints an intimate and dynamic portrait of a great and fabled neighbourhood.
