Pictures of cowboy Billy Clanton's headstone in the infamous Boot Hill Graveyard are frequently reported to have unexplainable apparitions. From the ghosts of the O.K. Corral to the feuding prostitutes lingering in the Bird Cage Theatre, eerie wraiths live again in these stories.

Book excerpt: The communities that once surrounded the infamous Wild West town of Tombstone, including Dos Cabezas, Fairbank, Gleeson, Pearce, Courtland, Charleston, and Milltown, are now mostly ghosts of their former selves. These rich mining towns had promising futures when they were first established, but many experienced only fleeting boom times, like Courtland, a promising copper camp that survived only 12 years. During its short existence, the town of Charleston, founded in 1879 as a milling site for ore from Tombstone's silver mines, was every bit as wild and rowdy as its neighbor. There was corruption in the region too. Dos Cabezas's Mascot Mine became part one of the largest stock scandals of the time when it was exposed around 1900. Today this fascinating, rough-and-tumble history lives on primarily in faded memories, crumbling remnants on the outskirts of Tombstone, and in vintage photographs gathered together in this volume.

From drunken shootouts in saloons to strikers clashing with mining executives, the town's past is filled with stories of vengeance and street justice. The aftermath of an 1885 lynching led directly to the establishment of the Copper Queen Library, too late to deter the infamous Bisbee Massacre of 1883. Author, journalist and historian Francine Powers uncovers the real-life dramas of Wild West Bisbee.

Download or read book Haunted Flutes written by Ethel Halstead and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this story came from an article I read in an Albuquerque newspaper: The story in the newspaper was about a hiker finding the remains of a corpse on a desert in Cochise county Arizona. At the time I wondered why a reporter even bothered to write up the story because someone is always finding skeletons and decomposed bodies in isolated parts of dry and hot deserts. Many of the bodies are those of illegal aliens crossing into the states looking for work, and while that is a very sad thing, it surely is not a rare thing, nor does it make truly interesting reading. But there was a follow up story stating that the body had been identified as a young attorney from Manhattan who had lived with a life-long dream of being a rancher/cowboy and owning a ranch in the great American west. There was no indication of foul play, so the man had likely died from heat exhaustion or snakebite.
