A couple grow concerned when an enigmatic family move next door, and the children start sneaking over to beg for help. Book excerpt: Adrift in a sleepy coastal Massachusetts town, a man who ferries fugitives by day gets twisted up in a plot to pilfer diamonds in a heist novel that infuses Elmore Leonard and Casablanca. Jack might be a polished, Harvard-educated lawyer on paper, but everyone in the down-at-the-heels, if picturesque, village of Onset, Massachusetts, knows his real job: moving around people on the run from powerful enemies. Except for the occasional fumble, the family business—co-managed with his father, a retired spy—is smooth sailing, filling up Onset's holiday homes during the town's long, drowsy off-season. But when Elena, Jack's enigmatic former flame—and former client-fugitive—makes an unexpected return to town, wealthy fiancé in tow, her arrival upends Jack's routine existence. Elena, after all, doesn't go anywhere without a scheme in mind, and it isn't long before Jack finds himself enmeshed in her latest hustle: intercepting millions of dollars' worth of raw diamonds before they're shipped overseas. With sharp wit and stylish prose, CrimeReads editor in chief Dwyer Murphy serves up an irresistible page-turner as full of heart as it is of drama.

  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press

Download or read book Southscapes written by Thadious M. Davis and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative approach to southern literary cultures, Thadious Davis analyzes how black southern writers use their spatial location to articulate the vexed connections between society and environment, particularly under segregation and its legacies. Basing her analysis on texts by Ernest Gaines, Richard Wright, Alice Walker, Natasha Trethewey, Olympia Vernon, Brenda Marie Osbey, Sybil Kein, and others, Davis reveals how these writers reconstitute racial exclusion as creative black space, rather than a site of trauma and resistance. Utilizing the social and political separation epitomized by segregation to forge a spatial and racial vantage point, Davis argues, allows these writers to imagine and represent their own subject matter and aesthetic concerns. Focusing particularly on Louisiana and Mississippi, Davis deploys new geographical discourses of space to expand analyses of black writers' relationship to the South and to consider the informing aspects of spatial narratives on their literary production. She argues that African American writers not only are central to the production of southern literature and new southern studies, but also are crucial to understanding the shift from modernism to postmodernism in southern letters. A paradigm-shifting work, Southscapes restores African American writers to their rightful place in the regional imagination, while calling for a more inclusive conception of region.

Book excerpt: For over a thousand years, a powerful oligarchy known as the Worldwide Order of Lightnings has oppressed us. With the help of the prying eyes of their pet chronomancers, the Lightnings have torn us from our homes... have forced us to do their bidding... have stripped us of our rights... even our names. I have spent my life in hiding. Please understand that an unrated telepath like me is a commodity, not a person. If it's not the thought-police come to call on me, it's the Lightnings, or worse, a suitor who won't accept no as an answer. Peace. Security. Love. They all elude me. When I manage to grasp any of them in my shaking hands, they are all but snatched away by outside powers beyond my control. My heart groans with black tears from all this folly. Madness to resist. Yet, eternal torment to fail.
