Book excerpt: A companion series to the acclaimed Word Biblical Commentary Finding the great themes of the books of the Bible is essential to the study of God's Word and to the preaching and teaching of its truths. These themes and ideas are often like precious gems: they lie beneath the surface and can only be discovered with some difficulty. While commentaries are useful for helping readers understand the content of a verse or chapter, they are not usually designed to help the reader to trace important subjects systematically within a given book a Scripture. The Word Biblical Themes series helps readers discover the important themes of a book of the Bible. This series distills the theological essence of a given book of Scripture and serves it up in ways that enrich the preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship of God's people. Volumes in this series: Written by top biblical scholars Feature authors who wrote on the same book of the Bible for the Word Biblical Commentary series Distill deep and focused study on a biblical book into the most important themes and practical applications of them Give reader’s an ability to see the "big picture" of a book of the Bible by understanding what topics and concerns were most important to the biblical writers Help address pressing issues in the church today by showing readers see how the biblical writers approached similar issues in their day Ideal for sermon preparation and for other teaching in the church Word Biblical Themes are an ideal resource for any reader who has used and benefited from the Word Biblical Commentary series, and will help pastors, bible teachers, and students as they seek to understand and apply God’s word to their ministry and learning.

Download or read book Practicing Prayer for the Dead written by James B. Gould and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history Christians have prayed for the dead. This book challenges Protestants, who seldom pray for the dead, to begin doing so, and Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, who pray only for the Christian dead, to include the unsaved as well. Gould discusses the meaning of prayer for final consummation of all things, growth of the blessed in heaven, purification of the imperfect in purgatory, and salvation of the unsaved in hell--identifying the necessary conception of the afterlife required by each particular prayer. He also reflects on the spiritual value of prayer for the departed--how it enhances faith, builds hope, and sharpens discipleship--and provides some sample prayers for public liturgy and private devotion. In essence, Practicing Prayer for the Dead offers an outline of theology from the perspective of death, arguing that prayer for all the departed is one aspect of a tightly knit web of doctrines. The argument, while revisionary in some respects, is orthodox, ecumenical, and integrative, engaging a range of academic disciplines so as to be biblically accurate, historically informed, and philosophically reasoned.

Download or read book Kingdom Theology written by G. Carlton Moore and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What this book argues for in today’s twenty-first-century church was a hallmark doctrine of old school Presbyterianism of the nineteenth century: the doctrine of the spirituality of the church. Which eschatological approach one uses will affect one’s understanding of the nature and practice of missions. Mission creep—the expansion of the church’s original objective(s)—is a real concern for the contemporary church, and how one understands eschatology affects one’s focus on missions. The mission of the church is narrow (Matt 28:18–20), and the calling of individual believers is broad (Rom 12:1–2). If we fail to make this crucial distinction, the church’s mission will lose its biblical emphasis. And if the church’s mission is lost, then the authority structure, instantiated in the offices and officers of the church, devolves into illegitimacy, because the church is no longer advancing the kingdom ends she was mandated to do by King Jesus. If the institutional church fails to do this, we will be relinquishing and abdicating and abandoning our most singular and particular and peculiar kingdom of God vocation: the harvesting, gathering, and perfecting of the saints.
