Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden Shades of Forestry: The Other Side is a compelling exploration of the complex world of forest management, offering a candid and insightful perspective from an insider. Author Sh. Vinod Bhatia, a seasoned veteran of the Indian Forest Service, pulls back the curtain on the challenges, complexities, and triumphs of those dedicated in protecting and nurturing our forests. Bhatia's book is a stark departure from the romanticized image of foresters as solitary guardians of nature. Instead, it delves deep into the realities of balancing environmental preservation with the demands of a growing population and economic development. Readers are introduced to the intricate interplay of policy, politics, and practicalities that shape the management of forests. Through vivid anecdotes and expert analysis, the author sheds light on the challenges faced by foresters on the ground. From grappling with bureaucratic red tape to addressing the needs of local communities, the book offers a comprehensive view of the multifaceted role of forest management. Bhatia also explores the impact of climate change, deforestation, and illegal logging on forest ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices. Hidden Shades of Forestry is more than just a critique; it is a call to action. Bhatia emphasizes the importance of collaboration between foresters, policymakers, and communities in finding solutions to the pressing challenges facing our forests. The book serves as a valuable resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the complexities of forest management and the dedication of those who work tirelessly to protect these vital ecosystems. By offering a rare glimpse into the world of forestry, Bhatia's book contributes to a broader understanding of the critical role forests play in our lives and the importance of sustainable forest management for the future of our planet.

Book Food Insecurity in India s Agricultural Heartland

Download or read book Food Insecurity in India s Agricultural Heartland written by HARPREET KAUR. NARANG and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is home to the world's largest hungry population and has a long way to go before it is anywhere near the mammoth task of achieving the United Nations' goal of ending hunger in 2030. It is ironic that this book raises the issue of Hunger in a state where it is least expected. Punjab is a state with mountains of food grains and overflowing godowns, with highest yields, and largest area under irrigation. Not only that, it is the Green Revolution state of India, that has played the most prominent role in helping India achieve its goal of food self-sufficiency. By investigating the hydra-headed concept of food security in Indian Punjab, this book brings to fore the different dimensions of the deprivation of human capabilities and the intricate relationship between food security and economy, ecology, and state policy. Moreover, it is a wakeup call for India; for if, this is the state of affairs in one of the more prosperous primarily agrarian states, what would be the situation in the poorer ones? The primary objective is to divert urgent attention to the issue of food security, as an important ingredient of human resource development. With a strong commitment to achieving the primary goal of human resource development, India's biggest burden could well become India's greatest asset in the path to inclusive development.

Book Remote Sensing of Northwest Himalayan Ecosystems

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Northwest Himalayan Ecosystems written by R. R. Navalgund and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Himalaya, one of the global biodiversity hotspots, is the abode of a variety of flora and fauna. The Himalayan ecosystems have immense ecological, socioeconomic, and aesthetic significance as they provide a wide range of ecosystem services. The northwest Himalaya (NWH), covering three states of India viz., Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, starts from the foothills of Shivaliks in the south and extends to the greater Himalaya in the north. This region is also the source of some of the major rivers of India. With the increase in population, the NWH ecosystems have been under threat due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, expansion of agriculture and settlement, overexploitation of natural resources, habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, mining, construction of roads and large dams, and unplanned tourism. The Himalaya being young and geotectonically active, remains inherently unstable, fragile, and prone to natural disasters. Climate change is also likely to impact the Himalayan cryosphere drastically. Recognizing the importance of the Himalaya, a National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem, one of the eight missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) of Govt. of India, to conserve biodiversity, forest cover and other ecological values in the Himalayan region has been taken up. Spaceborne remote sensing with its ability to provide synoptic and repetitive coverage has emerged as a powerful tool for assessment and monitoring of the Himalayan resources and phenomena. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun has taken up a number of studies in the fields of geology, water resources, forestry, agriculture, urban settlement, etc., over the last decade. The book summarises the work carried out in different disciplines, illustrated with tables and figures and a host of relevant references. It is hoped that the book serves as an excellent reference of immense value to the students, researchers, professors, scientists, professionals, and decision makers working in the NWH region.
