Download or read book The Jewish Experience at Harvard and Radcliffe written by Nitza Rosovsky and published by Museum. This book was released on 1986 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to an exhibition at the Harvard Semitic Museum on the occasion of Harvard's 350th anniversary, September 1986. Discusses the proposed quota for Jewish students at Harvard in 1922, when the Jewish student body had reached 22%. Harvard president A. Lawrence Lowell (also vice-president of the Immigrant Restrictive League) feared that the influx of "undesirable" Jewish students would prevent others from applying, undermine the university's American tradition, and heighten antisemitism. Describes reactions of alumni, students, and the press. Although an investigating committee affirmed the traditional policy of non-discrimination, an unofficial quota was adopted in 1925 and lasted until the 1950s. Regarding Radcliffe, there is evidence of tacit restrictions on Jewish admissions, but relations between Jewish and Gentile students were good. Includes excerpts from memoirs, and reprints of articles about social prejudice against Jews.

Download or read book These Walls Between Us written by Wendy Sanford and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an author of the best-selling women’s health classic Our Bodies, Ourselves comes a bracingly forthright memoir about a life-long friendship across racial and class divides. A white woman’s necessary learning, and a Black woman’s complex evolution, make These Walls Between Us a “tender, honest, cringeworthy and powerful read.” (Debby Irving, author, Waking Up White.) In the mid-1950s, a fifteen-year-old African American teenager named Mary White (now Mary Norman) traveled north from Virginia to work for twelve-year-old Wendy Sanford’s family as a live-in domestic for their summer vacation by a remote New England beach. Over the years, Wendy's family came to depend on Mary’s skilled service—and each summer, Mary endured the extreme loneliness of their elite white beachside retreat in order to support her family. As the Black “help” and the privileged white daughter, Mary and Wendy were not slated for friendship. But years later—each divorced, each a single parent, Mary now a rising officer in corrections and Wendy a feminist health activist—they began to walk the beach together after dark, talking about their children and their work, and a friendship began to grow. Based on decades’ worth of visits, phone calls, letters, and texts between Mary and Wendy, These Walls Between Us chronicles the two women’s friendship, with a focus on what Wendy characterizes as her “oft-stumbling efforts, as a white woman, to see Mary more fully and to become a more dependable friend.” The book examines obstacles created by Wendy’s upbringing in a narrow, white, upper-class world; reveals realities of domestic service rarely acknowledged by white employers; and draws on classic works by the African American writers whose work informed and challenged Wendy along the way. Though Wendy is the work’s primary author, Mary read and commented on every draft—and together, the two friends hope their story will incite and support white readers to become more informed and accountable friends across the racial divides created by white supremacy and to become active in the ongoing movement for racial justice.

Download or read book A Chronology of Librarianship 1960 2000 written by Jeffrey M. Wilhite and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Chronology of Librarianship, 1960-2000 continues the work of Josephine Smith in her original Chronology of Librarianship (Scarecrow, 1968). It updates and completes her work up to 2000, paying special attention to the progress made on technological and international fronts that have significantly altered the role and function of the librarian, especially the rise of the internet in the 1990s. The ramifications of this new level of global connectedness and of the new role of the librarian are of primary concern for author Jeffrey M. Wilhite. This book covers all areas of library literature that inform the history of librarianship and ranges over multiple continents. Its broad scope lends itself to wide use by scholars and students of library history and library literature. The chronology is presented in a dictionary format and separated into decades. It is complemented by a comprehensive bibliography and name index.
