Book Tools of American Mathematics Teaching 1800 2000

Download or read book Tools of American Mathematics Teaching 1800 2000 written by Peggy Aldrich Kidwell and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-08-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the blackboard to the graphing calculator, the tools developed to teach mathematics in America have a rich history shaped by educational reform, technological innovation, and spirited entrepreneurship. In Tools of American Mathematics Teaching, 1800–2000, Peggy Aldrich Kidwell, Amy Ackerberg-Hastings, and David Lindsay Roberts present the first systematic historical study of the objects used in the American mathematics classroom. They discuss broad tools of presentation and pedagogy (not only blackboards and textbooks, but early twentieth-century standardized tests, teaching machines, and the overhead projector), tools for calculation, and tools for representation and measurement. Engaging and accessible, this volume tells the stories of how specific objects such as protractors, geometric models, slide rules, electronic calculators, and computers came to be used in classrooms, and how some disappeared.

Book International Handbook of Mathematics Education

Download or read book International Handbook of Mathematics Education written by Alan Bishop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALAN J. BISHOP Monash University, Clayton, Victoria, Australia RATIONALE Mathematics Education is becoming a well-documented field with many books, journals and international conferences focusing on a variety of aspects relating to theory, research and practice. That documentation also reflects the fact that the field has expanded enormously in the last twenty years. At the 8th International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME) in Seville, Spain, for example, there were 26 specialist Working Groups and 26 special ist Topic Groups, as well as a host of other group activities. In 1950 the 'Commission Internationale pour I 'Etude et l' Amelioration de l'Enseignement des Mathematiques' (CIEAEM) was formed and twenty years ago another active group, the 'International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education' (PME), began at the third ICME at Karlsruhe in 1976. Since then several other specialist groups have been formed, and are also active through regular conferences and publications, as documented in Edward Jacobsen's Chapter 34 in this volume.

Book Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics

Download or read book Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics written by Daniel J. Brahier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics combines the latest developments in research, technology, and standards with a vibrant writing style to help teachers prepare for the excitement and challenges of teaching secondary and middle school mathematics. The book explores the mathematics teaching profession by examining the processes of planning, teaching, and assessing student progress through practical examples and recommendations. Beginning with an examination of what it means to teach and learn mathematics, the reader is led through the essential components of teaching, concluding with an examination of how teachers continue with professional development throughout their careers. Hundreds of citations are used to support the ideas presented in the text, and specific websites and other resources are presented for future study by the reader. Classroom scenarios are presented to engage the reader in thinking through specific challenges that are common in mathematics classrooms. The seventh edition has been updated and expanded with particular emphasis on the latest technology, standards, and other resources. The reader is introduced to the ways that students think and how to best meet their needs through planning that involves attention to differentiation, as well as how to manage a classroom for success. Features include: • Following on from the sixth edition, assessment takes a central role in planning and teaching. Unit 3 (of 5) addresses the use of summative and formative assessments to inform classroom teaching practices. • A new appendix is included that lists websites that can be used in a methods class to view other teachers interacting with students for discussion of effective teaching practices. • The feature entitled “Links and Resources” has been updated in each of the 13 chapters. Five strongly recommended and practical resources are spotlighted at the end of each chapter as an easy reference to some of the most important materials on the topic. • Approximately 150 new citations have either replaced or been added to the text to reflect the latest in research, materials, and resources that support the teaching of mathematics. • Significant revisions have been made to Chapter 12, which now includes updated research and practices as well as a discussion on culturally responsive pedagogy. Likewise, Chapter 8 now includes a description of best and high-leverage teaching practices, and a discussion in Chapter 11 on alternative high school mathematics electives for students has been added. • Chapter 9, on the practical use of classroom technology, has again been revised to reflect the latest tools available to classroom teachers, including apps that can be run on handheld personal devices, in light of changes in education resulting from the global pandemic. An updated Instructor’s Manual features a test bank, sample classroom activities, PowerPoint slide content, chapter summaries, and learning outcomes for each chapter, and can be accessed by instructors online at www.routledge.com/9781032472867.

Book Mathematics in the Early Years

Download or read book Mathematics in the Early Years written by David Clemson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clemsons' clear and readable book takes the reader from debates about how children learn and what children know and can do when they start school; through to a discussion of how mathematics can be managed, assessed and evaluated in the school and classroom. Linking these two parts of the book is a section on the subject of mathematics itself, from which the non-specialist reader can gain a view of what mathematics is, what needs to be thought about in planning and offering a curriculum and the special dilemmas faced in teaching and learning mathematics as a subject. A bank of case studies offers an opportunity to see mathematics in action in a variety of classrooms.

Book The Power of Picture Books in Teaching Math and Science

Download or read book The Power of Picture Books in Teaching Math and Science written by Lynn Columbia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's 50-plus lessons-each based on a different picture book or story-will help classroom teachers build a foundation for teaching math, science, and social studies concepts to their students. Each lesson uses children's literature to make challenging, abstract concepts relevant to children's lives, inviting them to learn these concepts while responding to a story's illustrations, theme, characters, and plot. The lessons also demonstrate how teachers can use children's literature to meet national standards in math, science, and social studies. Chapters 1 through 5 set the stage for using picture books, discussing the effective, imaginative integration of literature into the classroom. Teachers will learn to create an environment that ensures that when children and books come together, the experience is enjoyable and thought provoking. Chapters 6 through 9 provide individual lessons, by grade level, with detailed activities based on specific books.
