Book excerpt: Now assembled in one place, this series of articles on harness and the teamster's art by Jenifer Morrissey with Doc Hammill and Friends originally appeared in Rural Heritage magazine. Introductory chapters include choosing a harness for your equine and understanding harness materials and styles. The key chapters on the geometry of harness adjustment and finding the ideal point of draft resulted from months of research and collaboration. Rural Heritage's publisher remarked, "Our most extensive articles on the most essential aspects of draft horse driving. Jenifer Morrissey's much researched articles cover everything you need to know to correctly adjust your harness and collars for the best performance and comfort. Accompanied by very helpful photographs and illustrations. You will keep and reread these articles forever!" And now it's even easier to do that with the book Harness Lessons with Doc Hammill and Friends. Doc Hammill's decades of experience working equines in harness, coupled with his never-ending quest to ensure his equines work more comfortably and safely, gives him an unequaled perspective on the teamster's art. Together with Jenifer Morrissey, a teamster in her own right, as well as numerous other master teamsters, this book about harness does not pretend to rely on or recommend a specific type of harness. Instead it discusses what is common to the use of harness from multiple perspectives.

Book Training a Horse to Harness Using Positive Reinforcement

Download or read book Training a Horse to Harness Using Positive Reinforcement written by Hertha James and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was no longer able to ride, I embarked on the challenge of teaching my horse to work in harness. I wanted to see how far we could get using clicker training, which was such fun. This illustrated book contains the detail of my planning for this project. The plans guided me through careful consideration of all the mini-skills involved with: -Long-reining.-Handler dragging strange things on a rope.-Staying parked in narrow spaces.-Stepping back into tight dead-end spaces.-Rope and stick relaxation.-Familiarity with the harness at different gaits.-Pulling tires - traces but no shafts.-Walking beside the cart pulled by human helpers.-Familiarity with the idea of shafts.-Hitching up and driving at home.-Generalize to different places. The key was to expand the horse's comfort zone slowly by making sure she always knew what to do to earn her next click&treat. I filmed each step of the process and the book includes links to the video clips.

Book Bitterroot

Download or read book Bitterroot written by Susan Devan Harness and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 High Plains Book Award Winner for the Creative Nonfiction and Indigenous Writer categories In Bitterroot Susan Devan Harness traces her journey to understand the complexities and struggles of being an American Indian child adopted by a white couple and living in the rural American West. When Harness was fifteen years old, she questioned her adoptive father about her “real” parents. He replied that they had died in a car accident not long after she was born—except they hadn’t, as Harness would learn in a conversation with a social worker a few years later. Harness’s search for answers revolved around her need to ascertain why she was the target of racist remarks and why she seemed always to be on the outside looking in. New questions followed her through college and into her twenties when she started her own family. Meeting her biological family in her early thirties generated even more questions. In her forties Harness decided to get serious about finding answers when, conducting oral histories, she talked with other transracial adoptees. In her fifties she realized that the concept of “home” she had attributed to the reservation existed only in her imagination. Making sense of her family, the American Indian history of assimilation, and the very real—but culturally constructed—concept of race helped Harness answer the often puzzling questions of stereotypes, a sense of nonbelonging, the meaning of family, and the importance of forgiveness and self-acceptance. In the process Bitterroot also provides a deep and rich context in which to experience life.
