Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony Simplified, or the Theory of the Tonal Functions of Chords If, conversely, we start with a higher note, e.g., thrice-accented e and try to find those easily understood notes which lie below c', then doubling the length of the string will have to take the place Of halving, i.e., if we take the length of e3 as I, the note which corresponds to twice the length of the string (2) will be the under-octave of e3, therefore e'; a' will correspond to three times the length, e' to four times, c' to five times, and a to six times the length of the string in notes. Book Tonal Harmony in Concept and Practice

Download or read book Tonal Harmony in Concept and Practice written by Allen Forte and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A self-contained and comprehensive college textbook, this new work provides the basis for both the one-year course in elementary harmony and the two-year course which includes advanced harmony. A new and more effective approach to this traditional music discipline has long been needed. Accordingly, Professor Forte has provided students of music with a fresh treatment of bases of harmony--one which will lead to a more effective understanding of tonal music. Tradition has by no means been minimized, but many fresh ideas replace older (and, sometimes, inadequate) ones. For example: more comprehensive ideas of harmonic structure, a schema of modulatory progression, and an uncomplicated, learnable system of chord classification are presented here for the first time. The chapters dealing with modulation and melodic structure and development shed new light on those areas. Each section is brief, well-defined, and amply illustrated with musical examples. Emphasis is placed upon composition and analysis. These essential experiences give the general music student a firm foundation in the understanding of harmony--the how as well as the why, the underlying concepts as well as the techniques for manipulating specific materials." --Dust jacket flap.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony: Its Theory and Practice; Additional Exercises No satisfactory reason can possibly be given why harmony exercises should necessarily be (as they certainly are in most books) a mere series of dry chords, mostly in notes of uniform length. An attempt has, therefore, been made in the present work to do for harmony what the late Stephen Heller did so admirably for pianoforte studies - to invest them with musical int'erest, thus cultivating the student's feeling for melody and rhythm, while at the same time giving him an insight into the harmonic relations of the various chords employed. For this purpose, all the exercises, excepting a few of the earlier ones, are the basses of little pieces, varying in length from eight to thirty two bars, and containing considerable diversity, both of rhythm and of cadence. In dealing with the various discords, such as the ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths, it has not been thought needful, or. Even desirable, to insert them in every bar. The author's aim has been to show how they could be introduced easily and naturally, as a composer might use them in the course of a piece. The rarer discords will, therefore, be much seldomer met with in these exercises than those which in actual practice are more commonly employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony Simplified: A Simple and Systematic Exposition of the Principles of Harmony Designed Not Only to Cultivate a Through Knowledge of Chord-Construction but Also to Practically Apply That Knowledge and to Develop the Perceptive Faculties This little work offers no apology for its publication. It aims at the following distinct objects: - I. To treat the subjects of Scales, Keys, Signatures, and Intervals so thoroughly that the pupil will be prepared to understand with ease the principles of chord-construction. - II. To present the subject of Chord-Construction in such a manner that the pupil will be obliged to form all chords himself, thus deriving a practical knowledge of the subject. - III. To discard all arbitrary rules. Instead of blindly struggling with a mass of contradictory rules, the pupil is made acquainted with the original principles from which the rules are derived, and his judgment cultivated to apply them with discretion. - IV. The principles of the natural resolution of dissonances are shown, instead of giving the rules for the resolution of chords of the seventh. The pupil will apply these principles not only to chords of the seventh, but to all fundamental dissonances. - V. The chords of the Dominant Seventh, the Diminished Seventh, the Major and Minor Ninth, and the Italian, French and German Sixth, are shown to be but different forms of the same chord, with a perfectly uniform resolution, thus enormously reducing the difficulty of understanding these harmonies, and diminishing the complexity of the whole Harmonic System. - VI. The system of "Attendant" Chords will be found very helpful in understanding those chords which, though outside the key, evidently are closely related to some of its triads. In this book each new learner will find all they need in the area of chords and their decoration, and find their appetite whetted for the following books. This work is considered indispensable material for study by many musical educators and has stood the test of time. 'First Year Harmony' ranges through subjects such as harmonic resource, and makes a concise review of all that a student could require in the way of chords and chord decoration. The candidate for an exam would be well served by this book but any student of music has something to gain from this book. Lovelock wrote with remarkable clarity and he provided the reader with many exercises and a broad, illustrative range of examples. This edition remains utterly respectful to Lovelock's original work but it also adds even more for its reader, with additional examples added to allow the reader to fully assimilate and practice their newly acquired knowledge and retain the information. To leave the would-be student with a message, it would be remiss to fail to pass on Lovelock him self's stern words, encouraging those who would learn in a meaningful way from the materials he laid down. 'It must be firmly impressed on the student that what follows is to be studied, not merely read'. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Debussy, Richard Strauss and Granvill Bantock To face the problem candidly and fearlessly is to discover in it most fascinating elements, and to justify much that is still under the. Unspoken ban of the theorists. For much still remains over after all the usual exceptions have been catalogued. It is exactly this quantum that affords the advanced theorist the most happy results when treated with the candour he can bring to bear on it. And now our policy deals with this question specifically and in detail. Broadly stated, we go on the assumption that if the effect is musical. The means used must be right; and that if existing theory condemns the means then the theory is wrong and must be te-cast to classify that means, already justified in practice.
