Download or read book Harmonics Suppression of Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current Induced Fields with Application to SSC Low Energy Booster Magnets written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expression for eddy currents induced in a thin-walled conductor due to a time-dependent electromagnet field excitation is formulated, allowing subsequent analytical development of a closed form expression predicting vacuum chamber eddy current induced field harmonics in iron-core multipole electromagnets. A passive technique for harmonics suppression is presented with specific application to the design of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Low Energy Booster (LEB) Magnets.

Book Eddy current induced Multipole Field Calculations

Download or read book Eddy current induced Multipole Field Calculations written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-varying magnetic fields of magnets in booster accelerators induce substantial eddy currents in the vacuum chambers. The eddy currents in turn act to produce various multipole fields that act on the beam. These fields must be taken into account when doing a lattice design. In the APS booster, the relatively long dipole magnets (3 meters) are linearly ramped to accelerate the injected 325 MeV beam to 7 GeV. Substantial dipole and sextupole fields are generated in the elliptical vacuum chamber from the induced eddy currents. In this note, formulas for the induced dipole and sextupole fields are derived for elliptical and rectangular vacuum chambers for a time-varying dipole field. A discussion is given on how to generalize this derivation method to include eddy-current-induced multipole fields from higher multipole magnets (quadrupole, sextupole, etc.). Finally, transient effects are considered.

Book Compensation for the Effect of Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current by Digital Signal Processing for Closed Orbit Feedback

Download or read book Compensation for the Effect of Vacuum Chamber Eddy Current by Digital Signal Processing for Closed Orbit Feedback written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) will implement both global and local beam position feedback systems to stabilize the particle and X-ray beams. The relatively thick (1/2 inch) aluminum storage ring vacuum chamber at corrector magnet locations for the local feedback systems will induce significant eddy current. This will reduce the correction bandwidth and could potentially destabilize the feedback systems. This paper describes measurement of the effect of the eddy current induced in the APS storage ring vacuum chamber by a horizontal/vertical corrector magnet and its compensation using digital signal processing at 4 kHz sampling frequency with proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control algorithm for closed orbit feedback. A theory of digital feedback to obtain the linear system responses and the conditions for optimal control will also be presented. The magnet field in the vacuum chamber shows strong quadrupole and sextupole components varying with frequency, in addition to significant attenuation and phase shift with bandwidth ( -3 dB) of 20 Hz for horizontal and 4 Hz for vertical fields relative to the magnet current. Large changes in the magnet resistance and inductance were also observed, as the result of reduced total magnetic energy and increased Ohmic heat loss.

Book Eddy Current Control in the AGS Rapid Cycling Booster Accelerator Magnets

Download or read book Eddy Current Control in the AGS Rapid Cycling Booster Accelerator Magnets written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Booster requires highly variable magnet cycles. When B is large, eddy current induced sextupole, etc., in the dipole vacuum chamber (VC) is large, with a much smaller contribution from magnet ends. Simple passive coils excited automatically by transformer action cancel the B induced sextupole. A self correction coil is not required for the quadrupoles, since g induced aberrations are very small (

Book Calculations on Cylindrical Metal Vacuum Chambers in Pulsed Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Calculations on Cylindrical Metal Vacuum Chambers in Pulsed Magnetic Fields written by and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been suggested that metallic vacuum chambers might be suitable for pulsed magnets operating at audio frequencies, with pulse widths nominally 1/360 sec. In the present note calculations are given for a simple model of such a system, in order to estimate the effects of field attenuation and eddy current losses. The results of the calculation may be summarized briefly as follows, where the results apply to a cylindrical chamber of non-maeyletic stainless steel, 3.0 cm in inside diameter and 0.15 an wall thickness: (1) With steady-state harmonic excitation, the field in the interior Is reduced by a factor of (approximately) 1.03 at 2,000 cps compared to dc; (2) With transient operation, the exponential decay time is about 0.021 millisecond; (3) With square-wave excitation, at 200 gauss and 180 pps, the power dissipation in the stainless steel is about 24 watts/foot, or about a factor of 20 less if half-sine-wave pulses are used instead of square pulses. These results seem encouraging enough to warrant experimental investigation of this type of vacuum chamber for pulsed steering.

Book Harmonics Suppression in Electromagnets with Application to the ALS Storage Ring Corrector Magnet Design

Download or read book Harmonics Suppression in Electromagnets with Application to the ALS Storage Ring Corrector Magnet Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memo presents an analytical development for prediction of skew harmonics in a iron core C-magnet to due arbitrarily positioned electromagnet coils. A structured approach is presented for the suppression of an arbitrary number of harmonic components to arbitrarily low values. Application of the analytical harmonic strength calculations coupled to the structured harmonic suppression approach is presented in the context of the design of the ALS storage ring corrector magnets.
