Book An Archaeological and Geomorphic Survey of Paleoindian Sites at Harlan County Lake Harlan County Nebraska

Download or read book An Archaeological and Geomorphic Survey of Paleoindian Sites at Harlan County Lake Harlan County Nebraska written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harlan County Lake Paleoindian Project utilizes information from amateur archaeologists to document Paleolndian cultural resources at Harlan County Lake. Background information on Paleoindian resources and geomorphology at the lake and nearby areas of the Republican River valley is presented. Ten new sites are recorded, nine of which contain Paleoindian artifacts. Eight other previously recorded sites have additional Paleoindian components added, or additional Paleoindian artifacts described from previously recorded possible Paleoindian sites. Two sites were tested to determine if intact Paleoindian components exist. The first site, 25HN178, first thought to be a possible Folsom site, instead is interpreted as a Late Archaic or Woodland site based on radiocarbon ages. One Folsom artifact is present at the site, however. Site 25HN183, has burned features in late Pleistocene loess. One feature contained small burned bone fragments, ash and charcoal. At present, we do not know if this site represents human-constructed or a natural burn features. Information concerning late Pleistocene paleontological finds at Harlan County Lake is presented. In addition, there is a discussion of unprovenienced Paleoindian artifacts. We conclude that there is a diverse and very significant Paleoindian occupation in the Harlan County Lake area. These important resources are being exposed because most of the shoreline of Harlan County Lake is eroded into Late Pleistocene and early Holocene geological deposits. Recommendations for management of these rare cultural resources include additional testing at some sites, and an extensive survey of all Late Pleistocene and early Holocene deposits exposed at the lake. At present, we do not have enough information to determine whether any of these sites are for the National Register of Historic Places.

Book Archaeological Investigations at the North Cove Site Harlan County Lake Harlan County Nebraska An Interdisciplinary Approach Phase 2

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations at the North Cove Site Harlan County Lake Harlan County Nebraska An Interdisciplinary Approach Phase 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the archaeological Phase II testing of the North Cove site in Harlan County Lake. The objective of the project was to minimally test the North Cove site in order to determine its cultural integrity and potential eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. An interdisciplinary investigation of the exposed 9-meter deposit included the mechanical removal of the overburden, manual excavation of the Late Wisconsinan aged deposits and extensive flotation for the recovery of significant paleontological and archaeological data. Despite the incredible amount of significant paleontological and paleoecological data recovered from the site and despite the presence of unquestionable human artifacts in association with the Late Wisconsinan sediments, it was concluded that the original pre-Clovis site was not exposed during the investigation process and therefore could not be recommended for eligibility to the National Register. Such topics include a summary of past climate episode supplemented with recent geomorphic, palynological and pedological studies; prehistoric adaptations to the various climatic episodes; a reconstruction of prehistoric subsistence strategies of several cultural periods reflected in the fauna, flora, and phytoliths: and a current overview of the cultural history of the Central Plains, with emphasis on south central Nebraska. Book Archeological Reconnaissance Within the Lost Creek Flood Control Project Area Platte County Nebraska

Download or read book Archeological Reconnaissance Within the Lost Creek Flood Control Project Area Platte County Nebraska written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pedestrian survey of lands lying within the area of a proposed flood control alternative located on Lost Creek near Columbus, Nebraska, was completed in April 1979 under an agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Omaha District) and the University of Nebraska. Three archeological sites were identified; two of these (sites 25pT38 and 25PT39) yield contemporary 20th century debris, while a third (site 25PT37) appears to represent prehistoric use of the area. All three sites will be partially destroyed by the proposed action. Further investigation of the two recent loci is not recommended; neither site is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Further field evaluation of site 25PT37 (including subsurface tests) is recommended to permit assessment of research potentials and possible National Register eligibility. (Author).
