Book Influence of Plant Age Soil Moisture and Temperature Cycling Date on Container grown Herbaceous Perennials

Download or read book Influence of Plant Age Soil Moisture and Temperature Cycling Date on Container grown Herbaceous Perennials written by Sarah L. Kingsley-Richards and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overwintering younger container-grown plants is likely to result in more growth and higher quality following exposure to freezing temperatures. Effects of soil moisture level on overwintering container-grown plant growth and quality are cultivar-specific and a general effect could not be established in these studies. Overwintering container-grown plants are likely to be hardier in January and slight temperature cycles prior to exposure to freezing temperatures generally increase hardiness.

Book Herbaceous Perennials for the Central Great Plains Classic Reprint

Download or read book Herbaceous Perennials for the Central Great Plains Classic Reprint written by Gene S. Howard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herbaceous Perennials for the Central Great Plains The central Great Plains of the United States is an area distinctive in its plant growth and native plant Species. It was the native home of the great herds of buffalo and has been known since the advent of the white man as the short grass country. Native vegetation, except along natural waterways, is confined largely to nonwoody species; a few notable exceptions are sagebrush, greasewood, cactus, and yucca. The region is characterized by low annual rainfall, high wind movement, and low relative humidity. The central Great Plains region and its annual rainfall lines are shown in figure 1. Because of the harshness of the climate most native plant species behave as herbaceous perennials, in which the plant survives the winter as various types of underground roots and rootstocks. The main feature of the winter that limits survival of plants is not the cold tempera ture alone, but the combination of cold, wind, and low humidity often associated with low soil moisture. Unless plants have developed special defenses to meet these climatic conditions-such as small numbers of thinly scattered lenticels and leaves, sunken or protected stomata, or the ability to survive as underground root parts-they become desiccated and suffer from killback, especially during the winter. Because of their ability to survive the winters of the Central Great Plains, the group of nonwoody plants widely known as herbaceous perennials have a definite place in ornamental plantings within the region. They are especially important since the number of woody ornamentals adaptable to the area is limited. This report summarizes herbaceous perennial trials at the Cheyenne Horticultural Field Station, which is representative of some of the most difficult growing conditions to be found in the Central Great Plains region. Successful perennials at Cheyenne should be adapted to most of the Central Great Plains region and are worthy of trial in the entire Great Plains region. Book Growth in Herbaceous Perennials

Download or read book Growth in Herbaceous Perennials written by Rie Nakajima and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several studies of herbaceous perennials have addressed the effects of environmental factors during and after production, inherent cold hardiness, and post-harvest handling procedures to enhance flowering and growth during establishment. The regrowth of both woody and herbaceous forage plants following establishment is reported to be directly related to reserve-nitrogen content. Plants with higher nitrogen reserves grow sooner and produce more growth than plants with low reserves. The first objective in my study, carried out in the greenhouse and outdoors, was to identify any relationship between initial plant size and the regrowth of fourteen herbaceous perennials from five nursery sources. Of the varieties analyzed, six showed differences in growth between nurseries when grown outdoors, but it appears this was not due to their initial plant size. The second objective was to determine whether reserve nitrogen (N) content or the level of reserved total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) had an effect on regrowth. In this greenhouse experiment, six out of nine varieties that had higher levels of reserve N per plant tended to grow more. In contrast, five varieties showed more growth with higher levels of reserve TNC per plant. This suggests that reserve nitrogen may have more effect than carbohydrates on the regrowth of perennial plants during establishment. The third objective was to determine the timing of N uptake from soil applied N after establishment. For this greenhouse experiment, double-labeled depleted ammonium nitrate was applied to plants of Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila' 10 d after they were transplanted in the greenhouse. The uptake started soon after the application; 40% of the 15N was detected by Day 10, and then leveled off. This study suggests that herbaceous and woody perennials are similar in their requirement for reserve N for new growth. In general, the growth of herbaceous perennials appeared to be related to reserve N content rather than to initial plant size or levels of stored carbohydrates. However, this is preliminary study, and more studies are necessary for further investigation. regrowth of perennial plants during establishment.
