Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MIT Professor Glenn Ellison has spent more than a decade coaching math teams and developing math enrichment materials for his daughters and their classmates. His middle school Hard Math textbook and workbook contain the materials he used while coaching many successful Mathcounts teams. They are a labor of love sold at bargain prices with the hope that they will help students around the world develop a deep understanding of middle school math and enjoy every minute of it. The topics align with modern middle school curricula: fractions, decimals, percents, prime factorization, plane and spatial geometry, probability, statistics, combinatorics, algebra, modular arithmetic, etc. But Hard Math challenges students to develop a deeper understanding: it asks much harder questions than standard texts and teaches the material and problem solving strategies students need to attack them. For example, rather than asking students to write 2/5 as a decimal, it might ask students to use the fact that 99999 = 9 × 41 × 271 to find the tenth digit in the decimal expansion for 1/271. (It might ask this, but never actually does.) The personal and somewhat irreverent prose in the IMLEM Plus edition of Hard Math for Middle School speaks directly to students participating in both the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts and Mathcounts(r). The organization of the book is also designed to serve IMLEM students. But middle school math is middle school math and the book should be great for students preparing for other math contests or just looking for general enrichment or hard problems to do. Hard Math for Middle School: Workbook, sold separately, contains over 100 worksheets. The worksheets have problems at different difficulty levels that students can use to solidify their understanding of the material in each section of the textbook. It would be crazy to buy this text and not also get a copy of the workbook unless your child is using this book in school or in an enrichment program that is already providing plenty of practice problems. Solutions to many of the problems in the workbook are currently available for free on Prof. Ellison's website. Mathcounts(r) is a registered trademark of the Mathcounts Foundation, which was not involved in the production of, and does not endorse, this book.

Book Hard Math for Middle School Imlem Edition

Download or read book Hard Math for Middle School Imlem Edition written by Glenn Ellison and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For forty years the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts (IMLEM) has challenged students to aim higher than standard math courses and build a deeper understanding. This book is for students who take up this challenge. The topics align with modern middle school curricula: fractions, decimals, percents, prime factorization, plane and spatial geometry, probability, statistics, Venn diagrams, combinatorics, modular arithmetic, algebra. But Hard Math asks much harder questions. For example, rather than asking how to write 2/5 as a decimal, it asks students how to use 99999 = 9 41 271 to find the tenth digit in the decimal for 1/271. And it teaches the material and problem-solving strategies needed to solve them. The book is organized to serve IMLEM students and coaches: each chapter covers material for a given contest. But it can also be enrichment for anyone who wishes his or her math class were harder and preparation for other middle school math contests. Most students (basically everyone except students in MA schools that participate in IMLEM but not in Mathcounts) would prefer the newer "IMLEM Plus" edition with a purple cover rather than the blue-covered edition listed here. The newer purple version has an additional chapter covering extra material that students who aspire to do well in Mathcounts will want to know.

Book Time for Meaning

  • Author : Randy Bomer
  • Publisher : Boynton/Cook
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Time for Meaning written by Randy Bomer and published by Boynton/Cook. This book was released on 1995 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time for Meaning brings a bold curriculum to the writing workshop, a curriculum that honors literary thinking and the study of literature. Randy Bomer speaks eloquently and honestly about his own experiences in the classroom: his successive stages of revision, his growth from a good to a better teacher. He encourages inquiry into more reflective practice, inviting you to examine your ways of thinking, your relationship to the "subject of English," your standards for good teaching, your place in the professional community, and most significant, your attitude toward time. Time for Meaning is both thoughtful and practical. It confronts the realities of today's classrooms: overcrowded curriculums, unfriendly colleagues, choppy schedules, and resistant learners. Bomer suggests ways to transform these obstacles into opportunities to rethink the true purpose, meaning, and design of literacy education. He offers guidelines for: helping students choose topics that are important to them- so important that they'll have the energy to work through the writing process prompting initial responses to literature and moving toward polished pieces of writing using writing as a tool for thinking and inquiring-an essential habit of mind for students to develop understanding what makes for poor student research writing and how to improve it planning curriculums that focus on story in fiction and memoir. Since time is so often the crucial issue in teaching, Bomer asks you to examine your attitudes toward time and the way you use it. He writes, "What we do with time is what we do with our lives. When we are 'unable' to spend time on what we most value, it is because we have not found a clarity of purpose. We have lost our maps, lost our rudder, and we drift aimlessly, as if time were not passing, as if this teaching life were not ours to live." Bomer is specific and persuasive without being prescriptive. Time for Meaning is a snapshot of his current thinking, a report on work that has already benefited many teachers. It speaks as powerfully to experienced reading/writing process teachers as it does to newcomers.

Book excerpt: An adaptation of the business classic Getting Things Done for teenage readers The most interconnected generation in history is navigating unimaginable amounts of social pressure, both in personal and online interactions. Very little time, focus, or education is being spent teaching and coaching this generation how to navigate this unprecedented amount of "stuff" entering their lives each day. How do we help the overloaded and distracted next generation deal with increasing complexity and help them not only survive, but thrive? How do we help them experience stress-free productivity and gain momentum and confidence? How do we help them achieve autonomy, so that they can confidently take on whatever comes their way? Getting Things Done for Teens will train the next generation to overcome these obstacles and flourish by coaching them to use the internationally renowned Getting Things Done methodology. In its two editions, David Allen's classic has been translated into dozens of languages and sold over a million copies, establishing itself as one of the most influential business books of its era, and the ultimate book on personal organization. Getting Things Done for Teens will adapt its lessons by offering a fresh take on the GTD methodology, framing life as a game to play and GTD as the game pieces and strategies to play your most effective game. It presents GTD in a highly visual way and frames the methodology as not only as a system for being productive in school, but as a set of tools for everyday life. Getting Things Done for Teens is the how-to manual for the next generation--a strategic guidebook for creating the conditions for a fruitful and effective future.

Religion has the unique power to fire the imagination and empower the will to break the cycle of addiction to nonrenewable energy. The environmental crisis is a crisis not of the head but of the heart. The problem is not that we do not know how to stop climate change but rather that we lack the inner strength to redirect our culture and economy toward a sustainable future. Book Building Decision Support Systems

Download or read book Building Decision Support Systems written by Mark Wallace and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to the principles of intelligent decision support systems (IDSS) and how to build them with MiniZinc, a free, open-source constraint programming language. Managing an IDSS project requires an understanding of the system’s design and behaviour. The book enables readers to appreciate what “combinatorial” optimisation problems are, and how modelling a problem provides the basis for solving it. It also presents the main algorithms for tackling decision support problems, discusses their strengths and weaknesses, and explores ways of achieving the necessary scalability when problems become big. Moreover, to support the learning process it allows readers to try out the ideas described in the text on model applications and puzzles. The book highlights the potential benefits of deploying an IDSS. It enables users to recognise the key risks involved and identify which techniques can be applied to minimise them, and to understand the decision support technology sufficiently in order to manage or monitor an IDSS project. It also helps readers distinguish between good sense and mere jargon when dealing with anyone involved in an IDSS project, from sales personnel to software implementers. As such it especially appeals to graduate students and advanced professionals who need to learn how to build an IDSS and to tackle the problems on the way.
