Book The Harbor Master

    Book Details:

Book excerpt: This volume presents the best weird fiction of the American writer Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933). Chambers attained celebrity for the enigmatic volume The King in Yellow (1895), and this book reprints several of the most notable tales from that collection, as well as such later volumes as The Maker of Moons (1896), The Mystery of Choice (1897), and In Search of the Unknown (1904), among others. These stories display the power and strangeness of Chambers's weird conceptions, making it understandable why his work has exercised so profound an influence on such later writers as H. P. Lovecraft, Karl Edward Wagner, Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., and many other leading figures in the field. The Classics of Gothic Horror series seeks to reprint novels and stories from the leading writers of weird fiction over the past two centuries or more. Ever since the Gothic novels of the late 18th century, weird fiction has been a slender but provocative contribution to weird fiction. Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, the Victorian ghost story writers, the "titans" of the early twentieth century (Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, M. R. James, H. P. Lovecraft), the Weird Tales writers, and many others contributed to the development and enrichment of weird fiction as a literary genre, and their work deserves to be enshrined in comprehensive, textually accurate editions.

Book Embodying Design

Book excerpt: Rethinking design through the lens of embodied cognition provides a novel way of understanding human interaction with technology. In this book, Christopher Baber uses embodied cognition as a lens through which to view both how designers engage in creative practices and how people use designed artifacts. This view of cognition as enactive, embedded, situated, or distributed, without recourse to internal representations, provides a theoretical grounding that makes possible a richer account of human interaction with technology. This understanding of everyday interactions with things in the world reveals opportunities for design to intervene. Moreover, Baber argues, design is an embodied activity in which the continual engagement between designers and their materials is at the heart of design practice. Baber proposes that design and creativity should be considered in dynamic, rather than discrete, terms and explores “task ecologies”—the concept of environment as it relates to embodied cognition. He uses a theory of affordance as an essential premise for design practice, arguing that affordances are neither form nor function but arise from the dynamics within the human-artifact-environment system. Baber explores agency and intent of smart devices and implications of tangible user interfaces and activity recognition for human-computer interaction. He proposes a systems view of human-artifact-environment interactions—to focus on any one component or pairing misses the subtleties of these interactions. The boundaries between components remain, but the borders that allow exchange of information and action are permeable, which gives rise to synergies and interactions.

Book excerpt: A “mesmerizing” (Stephen King) supernatural novel about a sinister mindfulness app with fatal consequences from the New York Times bestselling author of The Chill. In this “taut, creepy techno-chiller” (Paul Tremblay, author of A Head Full of Ghosts), recently laid-off newspaper reporter Nick Bishop takes a humbling job: writing a profile of a new mindfulness app called Clarity. The app itself seems like a retread of old ideas—relaxing white noise and guided meditations. But then there are the “Sleep Songs.” A woman’s hauntingly beautiful voice sings a ballad that is anything but soothing—it’s disturbing, and more of a warning than a relaxation—but it works. Deep, refreshing sleep follows. So do the nightmares. Vivid and chilling, they feature a dead woman who calls Nick by name and whispers guidance—or are they threats? And her voice follows him long after the song is done. As the effects of the nightmares begin to permeate his waking life, Nick makes a terrifying discovery: no one involved with Clarity has any interest in his article. Their interest is in him.

Book excerpt: A holiday on the Mexican Baja draws an unsuspecting American student into the dark and terrifying white slavery trade that thrives just below the glamorous surface of this high-end playground of the rich. The young girl's parents are close friends of President Hunt who sanctions a covert CIA action to bring the young lady home. Alec Caldwell is assigned the task, and in rescuing Katherine, stumbles on a well organized drug smuggling operation linked to the kidnapping. Its existence is unknown to the DEA. Fearing exposure of their ties to the illegal drug trade, President Hunt and his Mexican counterpart conspire to have Caldwell disappear. A daring military raid frees Alec who ultimately takes down both the assassin sent to kill him, and the people who run the drug trade and who were planning to sell the young girt to a Saudi buyer in payment for the drugs they were funneling up the Baja into the U.S. President Hunt's betrayal of Alec brings a harsh response from the CIA. His misdeeds have been well documented and a secret campaign is launched to expose this treachery and unseat him. But the CIA's initial efforts fail. Hunt is ultimately taken down, but not by the CIA. A person outside the agency with a personal vendetta is thought to be the assassin. But she disappears and a worldwide manhunt ensues. Is the assassin a CIA pawn? Does Alec remain with the CIA and go with Vanessa to Morocco on yet another black ops assignment? Or does he return to Montana to the respectable lifestyle his wife has planned for him? And, what does Alec mean when he toasts Vanessa with... “Here's looking at you, Kid!”
