After the nineteenth-century boom years of coal exporting and shipbuilding for global markets came the First World War, then the mass unemployment and political turbulence of the 1930s. Luftwaffe bombing in the Second World War was followed by the peacetime challenge of attracting new industrial development. Against this background, four generations of the Chapman family played a leading role in the town and in County Durham as businessmen, soldiers, borough councillors, sportsmen, philanthropists and representatives of royalty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1907, Ida Martin spent most of her life in Saint John, New Brunswick. She married a longshoreman named Allan Robert Martin in 1932 and they had one daughter. In the years that followed, Ida had a busy and varied life, full of work, caring for her family, and living her faith. Through it all, Ida found time to keep a daily diary from 1945 to 1992. Bonnie Huskins is Ida Martin's granddaughter. In Just the Usual Work, she and Michael Boudreau draw on Ida's diaries, family memories, and the history of Atlantic Canada to shed light on the everyday life of a working-class housewife during a period of significant social and political change. They examine Ida's observations about the struggles of making ends meet on a longshoreman's salary, the labour confrontations at the Port of Saint John, the role of automobiles in the family economy, the importance of family, faith, and political engagement, and her experience of widowhood and growing old. Ida Martin's diaries were often read by members of her family to reconstruct and relive their shared histories. By sharing the pages of her diaries with a wider audience, Just the Usual Work keeps Ida's memory alive while continuing her abiding commitment to documenting the past and finding meaning in the rhythms of everyday life.

Book Dixie Dharma

  • Author : Jeff Wilson
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2012-04-16
  • ISBN : 080786997X
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Dixie Dharma written by Jeff Wilson and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhism in the United States is often viewed in connection with practitioners in the Northeast and on the West Coast, but in fact, it has been spreading and evolving throughout the United States since the mid-nineteenth century. In Dixie Dharma, Jeff Wilson argues that region is crucial to understanding American Buddhism. Through the lens of a multidenominational Buddhist temple in Richmond, Virginia, Wilson explores how Buddhists are adapting to life in the conservative evangelical Christian culture of the South, and how traditional Southerners are adjusting to these newer members on the religious landscape. Introducing a host of overlooked characters, including Buddhist circuit riders, modernist Pure Land priests, and pluralistic Buddhists, Wilson shows how regional specificity manifests itself through such practices as meditation vigils to heal the wounds of the slave trade. He argues that southern Buddhists at once use bodily practices, iconography, and meditation tools to enact distinct sectarian identities even as they enjoy a creative hybridity.

Book Secret Service in the Cold War

Download or read book Secret Service in the Cold War written by John B. Sanderson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The action-packed biography of a British intelligence officer who took part in major political events of the 20th Century before and during the Cold War. World War II had been won, but relationships between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union were weakening as the nuclear arms race made world peace precarious. Britain needed to know the Soviets’ intentions and military capabilities. A Secret Intelligence Service officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Sanderson had the job of finding out. This is his story. Based on Sanderson’s letters and personal accounts of his time with MI4 and MI6, this biography details his handling of secret agents behind the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War and organization of hidden arms depots. He observed the Paris UNO Security Council in 1948 and recruited émigrés for infiltration into Communist Bulgaria. He also reported on the Communist show trials in Sofia in 1949. Twelve years later, London tasked him to photograph the latest MIG fighter with the help of a CIA colleague. His getaway wasn’t easy . . . Sanderson’s early service life was equally challenging, from defending Britain’s coastline in 1940, picking up downed pilots during the Battle of Britain, to fighting Japanese forces in Asian jungles, before returning to London to join the Secret Intelligence Services. Get the inside story on events like the Berlin Air Lift, the Suez Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Experience Kim Philby and George Blake’s treachery and the effects the two “Olegs,” the Russian Colonels Penkovsky and Gordievsky, had on the international politics of Khrushchev, Kennedy, Gorbachev, Thatcher, and Reagan—and the course of world history.

Book Maggie Smith

Download or read book Maggie Smith written by Michael Coveney and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Steeped in theater history” this biography “seamlessly melds Smith’s personal and professional lives into an engrossing narrative” (Kirkus Reviews). No one does glamour, severity, girlish charm or tight-lipped witticism better than Dame Maggie Smith. Michael Coveney’s biography shines a light on the life and career of a truly remarkable performer, one whose stage and screen career spans six decades. From her days as a West End star of comedy and revue, Dame Maggie’s path would cross with those of the greatest actors, playwrights and directors of the era. Whether stealing scenes from Richard Burton, answering back to Laurence Olivier, or playing opposite Judi Dench in Breath of Life, her career can be seen as a ‘Who’s Who’ of British theatre. Her film and television career has been just as starry. From the title character in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and the meddling chaperone in A Room With a View to the Harry Potter films in which she played Minerva McGonagall (as she put it ‘Miss Jean Brodie in a wizard’s hat’) and the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films in which she played the wise Muriel Donnelly, Smith has thrilled, engaged and made audiences laugh. As Violet Crawley, the formidable Dowager Countess of Downton Abbey she conquered millions more. Paradoxically she remains an enigmatic figure, rarely appearing in public. Michael Coveney’s absorbing biography, written with the actress’s blessing and drawing on personal archives, as well as interviews with immediate family and close friends, is a portrait of one of the greatest actors of our time.
