Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (FAQ). Michael Jackson may be the King of Pop, but his influence extends much further. From his childhood years with the Jackson 5 through his astonishing solo career, he consistently broke sales records, pioneered the modern music video, and infused dance into rock and pop. While his life story has been well chronicled, Michael Jackson FAQ explores the stories behind his achievements. Did he play any instruments? How much of his own music did he compose? Who were his greatest influences in both music and dance? His art is his legacy, and Michael Jackson FAQ takes an in-depth look at Jackson's work with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons in addition to his solo catalog. Learn why current artists such as Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and countless boy bands still emulate his sound, look, and showmanship. Questions are tackled such as whether Off the Wall or Thriller better stands the test of time. From his childhood in Gary, Indiana, through the posthumous albums, this book covers lesser-known but important stories such as how Jackson influenced disco and hip-hop, how his singing style transitioned from childhood to adulthood, and how he learned to moonwalk.

Download or read book How Soon is Now written by Richard King and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most tangible aftershocks of Punk was its urgency to prompt individuals into action. Document your reality: do it yourself. From this, a generation of young men were inspired and, with often zero financial planning or business sense, in a bedroom, garage or shed, labels such as Factory, Rough Trade, Mute, 4AD, Beggars Banquet, Warp, Domino and Creation began, shifting the musical landscape and trading on an ethos and identity no brand consultant would now dare dream of. Musicians were encouraged to do whatever the hell they wanted and damn the consequences. From humble beginnings, some of our most influential artists were allowed to thrive: New Order, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Orange Juice, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, Aphex Twin, Teenage Fanclub, My Bloody Valentine, Autechre, Broadcast, Vampire Weekend, The White Stripes and Artic Monkeys to name but a handful. This is the story, set to an incredible soundtrack, of the enormous scale of the passions, the size of the egos, and the true extent of the madness of the mavericks who had the vision and bloody-mindedness to make the musical landscape exciting again.
Download or read book Morton Gould written by Peter W. Goodman and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2000 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Amadeus). Morton Gould (1913-1996) was a dominant force in American music throughout most of the 20th century. This phenomenally talented composer, conductor, arranger, and pianist worked in vaudeville and on radio, from Tin Pan Alley to Broadway, all the while churning out jingles, symphonies, and everything in between. His popularity, however, may have been the reason that he never received due recognition for his concert music. Peter Goodman began working on this biography with Gould himself more than a year before his death and was allowed full access by the family to all of Gould's diaries and files.
Download or read book Untouchable written by Randall Sullivan and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigative biography of Michael Jackson’s final years: “A tale of family, fame, lost childhood, and startling accusations never heard before” (ABC Nightline). When Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, millions of fans around the world were shocked. But the outpouring of emotion that followed his loss was bittersweet. Dogged by scandal for years and undone by financial mismanagement, Jackson had become untouchable in many quarters. Untouchable pulls back the curtain Jackson’s public person to introduce a man who, despite his immense fame, spent his entire life utterly alone; who, in the wake of a criminal trial that left him briefly hospitalized, abandoned Neverland to wander the globe before making one final—and fatal—attempt to recover his wealth and reputation. The Jackson that emerges in these pages is both naïve and cunning, a devoted father whose parenting became an international scandal, a shrewd businessman whose failures nearly brought down a megacorporation, and an inveterate narcissist who craved a quiet, normal life. Randall Sullivan delivers never-before-reported information about Jackson’s business dealings, his relationship with his family, and the pedophilia allegations that derailed his life and mar his legacy today, as well as the suspicious nature of his death. Based on exclusive access to Jackson’s inner circle, Untouchable is an intimate, unflinching portrait of the man who continues to reign as the King of Pop. “A dishy Michael Jackson biography that makes the exhaustively covered King of Pop fascinating all over again.” —People

Download or read book Maureen O Hara written by Aubrey Malone and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ang Lee (b. 1954) has emerged as one of cinema's most versatile, critically acclaimed, and popular directors. Known for his ability to transcend cultural and stylistic boundaries, Lee has built a diverse oeuvre that includes films about culture clashes and globalization (Eat Drink Man Woman, 1994, and The Wedding Banquet, 1993), a period drama (Sense and Sensibility, 1995), a martial arts epic (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000), a comic book action movie (Hulk, 2003), and an American western (Brokeback Mountain, 2005). The Philosophy of Ang Lee draws from both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions to examine the director's works. The first section focuses on Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist themes in his Chinese-language films, and the second examines Western philosophies in his English-language films; but the volume ultimately explores how Lee negotiates all of these traditions, strategically selecting from each in order to creatively address key issues. With interest in this filmmaker and his work increasing around the release of his 3-D magical adventure The Life of Pi (2012), The Philosophy of Ang Lee serves as a timely investigation of the groundbreaking auteur and the many complex philosophical themes that he explores through the medium of motion pictures.

Download or read book A Legend for the Legendary written by James A. Vlasich and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of baseball are controversial. James A. Vlasich discusses the debates between two men intimately involved in nineteenth-century baseball, Henry Chadwick and Albert G. Spalding. Abner Graves of the Mills Commission claimed that Abner Doubleday had invented the game and he had done it in Cooperstown, New York. This claim was scrutinized at the time but the myth became etched into baseball history. Through the years, however, some critics have questioned the Mills Commission report. The problem is that the Baseball Hall of Fame is built on this shaky foundation. The lack of diligence on the part of Spalding's self-appointed committee has led to a credibility gap for the baseball shrine that continues a half century after its dedication. Indeed, the story of the building of the Baseball Hall of Fame is filled with intrigue worthy of a political thriller.

Download or read book Lure Lore and Legends of the Moreno Valley written by Moreno Valley Writers Guild and published by Secret Staircase Books, an imprint of Columbine Publishing Group. This book was released on 2021-11-06 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before it became part of the vast Beaubien-Miranda Land Grant (later the Maxwell Land Grant) of more than 1.7 million acres in the New Mexico territory, the Moreno Valley was the summer hunting grounds of Apache and Ute native tribes. Later this was the scene of a gold rush, the center of the Colfax County War, a passageway to the Santa Fe Trail, and on the regular route of American frontiersman Kit Carson. Visionaries, explorers, ranchers, scallywags, and murderers called the location home. At one time the population of this obscure place was larger than that of Santa Fe, and the now-ghost town of Elizabethtown was proposed to become the state capitol. Little had been written about the history of northern New Mexico’s Moreno Valley until the 1990s, when a group of business people called upon local writers to research and document the fascinating history of the area and the towns that still exist here today. Speaking with members of the pioneer families who came West with nothing much more than grit and determination, the resulting oral history grew to encompass the work of historians and, with the blessing of the History Department at University of New Mexico, the resulting book brought to life the legends of the Moreno Valley’s tumultuous past. Now in its 3rd Revised and Expanded edition Lure, Lore, and Legends is a must-read for anyone who has ever visited or dreams of visiting northern New Mexico. Praise for Lure, Lore, and Legends of the Moreno Valley: “It was an honor to play even a minor role in introducing these hardy souls to the arduous but fulfilling work of incorporating oral testimony into historical research. They applied their writer’s sensibility and its attendant demand for perfection to a task few have attempted before. Their product speaks for itself … a gift given back to a region which has brought them so much joy and pleasure … an acknowledgement of a debt owed those who came before and who might have been relegated to oblivion by the oversight of professional historians had they not taken pen and microphone in hand?” –Carlos Vasquez, The University of New Mexico [from the Foreword] Reviews from the 1st edition: “Fun read, especially if you are new to the area.” – Bob Hurt, 5 stars, online review “This book was of especial interest since we now have a cabin in this region. A must for locals.” – Suzanne M. Schneider, 5 stars “Full of stories about the history of Northern New Mexico, well written by a selection of published and new authors.” – rsafford, 5 stars “The Moreno Writer's Guild have put together a wonderful book about the history of Moreno Valley (For Vietnam Veterans that includes Angel Fire Vietnam Memorial.) Great book to read while visiting that part of New Mexico. I visit Angel Fire often and found the book to be entertaining and enlightening about why the area is like it is today - like the unfinished tunnel on the north side of Eagle Nest lake, and of course, the building of the Vietnam Memorial. This area is so rich with treasured old stories and tales that the authors share with us. I would recommend a copy of this book to any visitors to the area or for those who just like reading local history books. it is most enjoyable to read.” – Rev. Bill McDonald Jr., 4 stars, online
