Book Drew Friedman s Sideshow Freaks

Download or read book Drew Friedman s Sideshow Freaks written by Drew Friedman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melvin Burkhart the Anatomical Wonder; Zip the Pinhead; Chang and Eng, the original Siamese twins; Johnny Eck, the King of the Freaks; Koo Koo the Birdgirl; and 45 more fascinating sideshow freaks both famous and obscure are immortalized in Drew Friedman's delightful portraits. Before the politically correct impulses of the 1970s squelched the grand American tradition of the sideshow -- people born with abnormalities and others, like Jolly Jere the Fat Man, who created their oddity -- exhibited themselves to the shock and thrill of millions in sideshows nationwide. As a youth in the late 60s and early 70s, Drew Friedman often visited Coney Island with his family, and he and his brothers always insisted on seeing the Freak Show. Drew Friedman's Sideshow Freaks presents 50 of his favorite historic human oddities -- famous and obscure -- in mesmerizing full-color portraits. As in Warts and All, Old Jewish Comedians, and More Old Jewish Comedians, Drew Friedman once again meticulously, brilliantly, and affectionately brings to life people in the show business, this time focusing on America's oddest performers.

Book The Rolling Thunder Logbook

Download or read book The Rolling Thunder Logbook written by Sam Shepard and published by Bobcat Books. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autumn, 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue - a rag-tag variety show, a travelling gypsy circus - swept across the Northeast US. Bob Dylan helmed the chaotic caravan, gathering a host of stars in his wake: Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, T-Bone Burnett, Joni Mitchell and others. The Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Sam Shepard was invited to write a Fellini-esque film out of the chaos. Throughout the many moods and moments of his travels he kept an impressionistic logbook of life on the road, replete with poetry, sketches and intimate accounts: This is that logbook. Updated with a myriad of candid photographs - many never before published - a foreword by T-Bone Burnett and a poetical preface from Sam Shepard, The Rolling Thunder Logbook perfectly captures the camaraderie, isolation, head games and pill-popping mayhem of the tour, providing a window into Dylan's singular talent, enigmatic charisma, and vision of America. “The Rolling Thunder Revue was more fun than the law allows. By a long shot. It was a bus full of musicians and singers and painters hurtling through the dead of night, making a movie, writing songs, and playing some of the most incendiary, intense, and inspired rock ‘n’ roll, before or since.” T-Bone Burnett

Book Ghost Notes

Download or read book Ghost Notes written by Michael Corcoran and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ghost notes" is a musical term for sounds barely audible, a wisp lingering around the beat, yet somehow driving the groove. The Texas musicians profiled here, ranging from 1920s gospel performers to the first psychedelic band, are generally not well known, but the impact of their early contributions on popular music is unmistakable. This beautiful Tim Kerr-illustrated collection provides more background on the Texas from which these artists sprang, fully formed. Readers will learn about the black gay couple from Houston who inspired the creation of rock 'n' roll, as well as the true story of the origin of Western Swing. They will learn about "the first family of Texas music" and the birth of boogie-woogie, the dirt-poor singers and the ballad collectors who saved folk songs during the Depression, and the accordeonista whose musical legacy was never contained on recordings but was passed on by his protégé. The pioneers of modern times include the Dallas rapper who became the wordsmith of gangsta rap, the sheriff's son from Dumas who produced the signature tunes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and the blind lounge singer Kenny Rogers called the greatest musician he's ever known.

Book excerpt: Beginning with rockabilly, moving on to folk music, sliding over to electric, and falling into a psychedelic phase, like a chameleon Bob Dylan has changed his skin repeatedly over the years, juggling his image with apparent ease and subverting the prevailing social and aesthetic models each time. His Supro guitar and the leather jacket - reminiscent of James Dean; the muse of his hobo period Suze Rotolo and his legendary Triumph Bonneville; the Newport Jazz Festival and the Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village: artist Matteo Guarnaccia has documented this pilgrimage of styles stage by stage, year by year, with a wealth of detail. The clothes, faces, music and places of those years become subjects to colour in, paper-dolls to dress, and board games to assemble, while the characters of his songs provide the members of a colorful circus. This is the ultimate collector's activity-book to be approached with glue, scissors and coloring pencils, dedicated to all the fans of the legendary singer-songwriter.

The three popular girls are so very rich and very spoiled to the bone. Each of the three girls have different personalities; they are always expressing their styles of clothes that all 3 of them wear to school everyday. Chloe tries to spend all of her money so she can buy clothes online. She does not get along with her sister Amy. Chloe hates going to school every day; she is mean to a lot of people at that school. Chloe never gets to spend any time with her beau because she is always working and also doing her homework after she gets off from work. The two of them argue a lot. She does not have the perfect family. She is the hottest chick at school. Summer is just the sweetest person that you will ever meet. She does not always yell at people. Her favorite color is yellow. Summer has a sister named Naomi. Let me tell you something else, they never agree on anything with each other you could possibly name of. The two of them would definitely honestly fight about it. Summer used to have a boyfriend named Max, but I am not going to tell you what happened to their past relationship. Kaylee was the more fly chick and a hot, sexy chick. She was not always so sweet for looks can be so deceiving. She can stay mad at anyone for a very long time. It takes her a long time to get over something that made her very angry. I totally forgot where Kaylee lives anyway. Kaylee loves going to school; she is a straight A-student. She loves to party with her friends and drink all night long. Kaylee really does not have a curfew; she can come home anytime. She would never date any guys that have really bad breath. Kaylee’s high school sweetheart is Jake Stanley. The two of them have been dating ever since middle school and now in high school. She fell head over heels for that guy. He rides motorcycles. He is basically the love of her life. Jake and Kaylee do everything together like going out dancing or hanging out with his friends. They make the perfect couple. He makes her laugh and smile. They both make each other happy. What they have is real love, not puppy love. So you need to read to find out what happens to these three girls in my book. It is a very interesting book, You are going to really like it. It is very funny at the same time and very sad too. There are a lot of funny parts in the book that make me laugh.
